I like Donal Logue and think he's a good actor, but he typically plays characters who get old after awhile and overstay their welcome. Case in point, the retired USDM on SOA, now Horik who has lived a little longer than he really should have.

There's only two episodes left in the season and he'll be dead before it's over.

All of that said, I think Horik's son looks like a kid I wouldn't gently caress with. Dude loving loves killing things. Did you guys see that hateful look? That was some murder in this loving eyes man, and he's like a 14 year-old kid raping full-grown-rear end men with a giant razor blade with a handle attached to it.

e: Maybe I was just half-paying attention, but what was up with the battle at the end? What happened? I though Ragnar was going to peacefully talk to Ecbert, next thing I know I look up from cleaning my 1911 and Horik's kid is murdering dudes left and right.

Wouldn't be surprised if there was another deleted scene that would have explained Horik's reasoning for it since it seems he was the one responsible.

Something seemed off about the last few episodes to me - not sure what it is. They weren't bad they just didn't seem as good as the rest of the season has been. Things got weird for me around when Floki randomly decided to turn and it felt like the show shifted directions all the sudden. Regardless I hope the season finishes strong.

Horik sent his kid and some men off before the envoys arrived, expressly with orders to ambush and kill them because he rightly assumed that Ragnar would want to talk and cut some kind of deal (presumably a land deal) with Ecbert and Horik just wants to kill him no matter what.

Why leave Ecbert's son alive though? I mean I assume so that he goes and tells his father the Vikings betrayed him and Ecbert would attack Ragnar but wouldnt the same result have occurred if he was killed?

I don't think so because they expressly left Athlwolf alive in the ambush. I think the message they were sending Ecbert is that they haven't forgotten last time and they won't be caught with their guard down again. Whether or not Ragnar knew about the ambush I've got no clue, but it's unlikely he wouldn't notice that Horik's son had left the camp.

I thought maybe Ragnar expected Horik to try and gently caress things up, hence all the furtive glancing? Homie has to have a plan...

I wonder if Skaarsgard has a scheduling conflict or something, it feels like they're almost setting it up to write him out of the show. His motivations and character just switched dramatically out of nowhere.

The tone of the show has definitely changed in the second half of the season. Ragnar has become isolated, symbolized a couple episodes ago at the feast when he was standing in the shadows, an observer instead of a participant. Lagertha's back but things are still very tense with her, Aslaug is so unhappy with him she bore him a monster, Floki seems a bit jealous of his success, Beorn is upset with him for being too critical, Athelstan is missing. Rollo, after his betrayal, ironically seems like his closest ally and confidant right now. Watching his fall from grace has been very uncomfortable, but I think it makes for some good dramatic tension and I wouldn't be surprised to see it lead up to some sort of cliffhanger at the end of this season only to be resolved next year.

I don't know but she was sexy. Ecbert must not like women because who wouldn't want to hop in the sack with that all night.

Though she does seem a little batshit nuts. When Ecbert sent the soldiers in there, there had to be like three or four, and though I assume they were supposed to kill her and she didn't know it, she sure seemed ready to partake in a MMMMW orgy.

I don't think Floki's seeming change of alliance is all that weird as a plot point, and his reasons seem solid enough (religion, and a growing distaste for Ragnar's lack of humility), but.. it really wasn't all that well-written in the show. There were only a couple of scenes covering it, and Floki didn't really share a lot of scenes with Horik past that talk they had during season 1. Then again, I'm not surprised, because as much as I love the show, there are a lot of points where I feel the writers had problems juggling plot points and characterizations. It also feels more jarring because the first half of season 2 was probably the show's highest point so far.

Orange Carlisle

Being that more than one interview with the show's creator so far has had a "Well we cut out a scene that" moment in it I wonder how much of the build to Floki turning didn't make it in that would have fleshed it out a bit more and made it feel less jarring. Cutting out the scene with Horik explaining that he wanted Borg to have hope so he'd suffer more caused an awkwardness when he didn't save Borg from the blood eagle.

Hopefully cutting out important bits that would have made the story have more impact doesn't become a thing.

Edit: Not saying Floki doesn't have any reason at all - just seems like it would take more than that being that Floki generally was Rangnar's closest ally whenever anything goes down

Honestly, do people not even pay attention to things? Ecbert had already gone a few rounds and had no more in the tank. To placate the insatiable princess so he could get some sleep he sent in the guards to run train until she was satisfied. He specifically tells her this and we see the guards drop their weapons and shields with a smile on their face.

The Saxon helmets really bother me. They definitely didn't mass produce helmets back then. The Vikings all have unique weapons and armor, why skimp for the Saxons?

I thought I was paying attention but maybe not enough I suppose. I thought Ecbert meant to kill her and send the soldiers in to do that under the guise of running train on her.

She is his horse in the Mercia civil war. If she wins he gains control without having to actually conquer Mercia. To further their alliance he promised to hire some Viking mercs to fight for her. His plan was to wait for the next raid and then pay the raiders to fight in Mercia instead of Wessex. However his previous breaking off of negotiations with an army once Ragnar sailed home is complicating the issue.

Edit: It's quite probable that he plans to eventually off her. However that wouldn't be until after a bloody civil war that weakens Mercia to the point where Wessex and Northumbria can divvy it up with impunity.

She's a unpredictable nutcase so any smart ruler like Ecbert would off her once she outlived her usefulness to his schemes.
