Wasn't Vanilla Ice cool with his name being used? Why did they even say that they would try to contact artists for their permission? It's pretty obvious that they didn't bother.

I don't think any Bamco reps said anything about contacting artists, all that was like officially stated is it would be following the names used by the NA and EU name changes which in and of itself is quite possibly a lie.

Yeah, the stand is still called D4C, it's just the name of that super move in particular is the full name of D4C so they changed that.

I love that they changed the first name of Stephen Steel, who isn't technically named after anyone because his last name isn't Stills. Meanwhile over in Scott Pilgrim, there's a guy named Stephen Stills, and everyone always says his full name.

Stephen might actually just be a mistranslation rather than a name change. That's one an easy mistake to make given how the kana would work, but given what the rest of this translation is (Amazing) it's possibly a name change.

I sincerely doubt Bandai would go to the trouble to contact the original bands for all of the references and wanted to be safer than sorry. So the localizers were probably just told to change all the names and occasionally had some fun while doing it. Some of those are hilariously self-aware.
