I wouldn't mind an episode of Ball Fondlers as a bluray extra, but I am really hoping they don't go all fan-service with season two.

I want them to make new moments, not rehash the same ones endlessly until they aren't clever any more. Ball Fondlers is fun because of the R&M axiom "don't think about it." If the inside jokes get too elaborate or serial, it will be more like Real Fake Doors: funny at first, but pointless in the end. And before someone gets their panties in a wad: yes, Real Fake Doors was a funny bit, but to a point. Stuff like that can't go on forever because people will change the channel, just like Rick did.

Yeah, I hope the Meeseeks don't show up again, for example. There's a lot of elements on this show that could go the way of the Borg if the show overuses them.

I don't mean another episode of Rick and Morty with Ball Fondlers in it. I mean an episode of Ball Fondlers with no mention of Rick or Morty, separate from the Rick and Morty series like the X-tacles, or dropped in the middle of a cliff hanger like Terrence and Phillip

Bring back too much, too often, and the show could devolve into self-reference. ATHF did that poo poo the right way with the meeting of all the antagonists.

This show already self referenced itself more then once. So I think we'll be OK. Try not to worry. As long as they don't hit Archer levels of bad, the show will be A-OK. :D

I wouldn't call what the show has done so far as being "self referential". I'd call it "having a continuity". Similar but different things, one can devolve into the other.

The 4th and part of the 5th season of adventure time were pretty bad about that before the show got back on track.

If they had directly switched they'd have had to deal with a whole world that had infrastructure built around Cronenberg physiology and was adjusting on a massive scale. No thank you, let's just take over for the dead Rick who pulled a solution out of his un-Cronenberged rear end.

Edit: in all likelihood it was similarly apocalyptic there too, with the Cronenberg Smiths being the brave survivors fighting off the terrifying normal humans.

The real question is if Cronenberg Cronenberg makes movies with humans as the disgusting horrible monsters.

I think Archer kind of shot itself in the foot with that awesome montage of "stuff that's going to happen" (only half of which actually did) in the first episode. Also, it seemed to lean pretty hard on a small number of jokes. Also also, adding a baby is never good news. :(

Archer's format has always been pretty basic catchphrase comedy; repeating the same jokes each week in slightly different situations with an small amount of turnover, usually long after they've been driven into the ground. Funny at first, but quickly diminishing returns.

This season's been even worse because despite appearing to reinvent itself as Archer "Vice" it actually mined back into old material harder than ever, revisiting old one-off characters, outright talking about old catchphrases and jokes, and sticking to the same old plot conventions despite the radically different situation (Pam & Cheryl stow away, Ray paralysed etc.)

It would seem nostalgic only the things they're nostalgic for never stopped happening.

edit: Also ever single conversation ends with at least one party getting frustrated and nothing gets resolved without a disagreement and a misunderstanding first.

I like Rick and Morty. I hope we never see Meeseeks or the improv tv channels again (for the opposite reasons).

I think in the first three Seasons Archer had a very good balance with re-using material as callbacks and adding new stuff. This season, instead of giving that stuff a rest, they leaned very hard on it. And even the new stuff they made they reused a lot. It was weird and extra disappointing considering how awesome the concept of the season could have been.

Despite the weirdness of Rick and Morty and the continuity, I think they do a pretty good job of creating new stuff for each episode that is never referenced again and shouldn't be. For instance Mr. Meseeks has basically been taken to the extreme already within their first episode with them. There's not really anything left to explore, either comedy or story-wise, unlike the inter-dimensional TV which is still sitting in their living room and has unlimited possibilities content-wise. It will be hard for them to come up with a good reason for the characters to be watching interdimensional TV with fascination again. We've already seen Rick just chilling out watching Ball Fondlers though. I think it would be a funny way to insert background gags at least.

With each episode the writers have shown they're eager to take the show to new places and invent new stuff for each episode to be based around. Like before the finale I don't think we've gotten a hint that Jerry is obsessed with Titanic but that was the basis for a clever but perhaps underwhelming B-plot. Maybe it's just because it's the first season, and a show falling into continuity porn/callbacks is a definite possibility (Harmon has done that with Community with things like the paintball or Dungeons and Dragons episodes) I don't see it happening for R&M because Community is set in a small place with the same characters and setting (and even then they manage to get a lot of different episodes in) but Rick and Morty has a spirit of exploration and experimentation to it that a lot of other shows don't.

I think the only callback bit that was weak (to me) was Gazorpazorpfield.

I disagree, I wouldn't put it past this show to do pretty much a straight sequel to the television one. Maybe in the middle of something else so it can intercut drama and TV ideas again, I would guess the odds of it coming back are at about Anthology of Interest levels; I feel like they're going to find room every season for an improv episode, since they seemed to adore doing it (and it was amazing).

Wait, like, actual money?
The first season of Archer straight up made me laugh non-stop. I've watched entire episodes of the current season without once cracking a smile. Jokes rely on the element of surprise to a considerable degree. Virtually 100% of Archer this season is predictable re-treading of worn-out material. A drat shame.

So, yeah. I never want to see Mr. Meseeks again.
