They do use these kind of tippers with bins that are moved around by rail. Not coal boats but bins full of sugar cane at least.

I always love these things which are showing images of the future which still have contemporary technology in them. Yes in the future we will have a device to flip boats over! But why? To unload coal into our steam trains of course!

The skipper grumbles about having to rearrange his cabin every single time they do this. And he wonders if he lost any more crewmen who picked a bad time to take a nap onboard.

To be fair, this one pretty much came about in the Falkirk Wheel, except instead of unloading boats it's used to connect two canal systems, one of which is 23 meters higher than the other.

Critically the wheel doesn't turn boats upside down. It might be more fun if it did mind you, although less useful.

Before anyone clicks this, take note that it's one of those lovely sites that'll let you do the quiz then demand some personal information before you can look at the answer.

Also, the point of that question is to incite some funny hypothetical discussion. If you outsource the invention of an arbitrary numerical answer to some quiz written by a moron to round up email addresses for spam, you have murdered some fun.

The situation in this picture is very similar to one that led to my dad falling and suffering a spinal injury. The only reason he was on the ladder is because I told him I wouldn't do it because it was dangerous. He's dead now. The funny picture thread has made me sad today.

This picture looks loving horrible but it doesn't actually seem like the ladder could fall, since it's braced against the railing. I guess it would be pretty easy to fall while getting on and off the ladder, though.

Yeah, it doesn't seem that much different than if he was 20 feet up against a wall with a long ladder braced on the ground. It's braced well enough as it is, but a fall in either case would be about the same.

Plus, that other guy has his hand on it. His hand.

So they are just going to put that larger ladder on the stair case? The way its set up is pretty drat stable, sure its a massive safety violation and there are better ways but its stable.
