Figured this would be worth posting in here. Google is showing off a new feature of their camera app: Adjustable DOF. It works by moving the camera in a sweeping motion so that it can collect depth information. Then it uses that data to apply a lens blur effect over different parts of the image. Of course it works well with the example photos they've provided. I guess it would obviously only work for stationary subjects. http://googleresearch.blogspot.ca/2014/04/lens-blur-in-new-google-camera-app.html BANME.sh fucked around with this message at 21:55 on Apr 16, 2014 |

First you take a normal picture, keeping your subject centered. Then Google Camera instructs you to raise your phone or tablet while still keeping your subject in the center; likely for additional depth information. After that when looking at the result, you’ll need to wait a few seconds for image processing; this took about 10 seconds on my phone. Finally, you can then drag a slider to add or remove blur to your photo, even choosing your own focal point. Here’s a quick example from my Moto X:

In a similar vein, the Flickr app just updated on android and iOS, and added auto-backup for photos: http://blog.flickr.net/en/2014/04/17/introducing-flickr-3-0-for-iphone-and-android/ Still no live filters for Android but the filters are idiot piss garbage anyway. At least the app itself looks better now.

^^ Dog photo rules. Can't remember if I've asked this question before or not: are there any iphone camera apps that let you lock the focus and exposure? The iphone has a bitch of a time focusing on anything small, like a spiderweb or the tip of your finger, and it underexposes like a mofo if you try to shoot something against a bright background. This took around ten tries, always either too dark or focusing on the leaves in the background:

Alviso Marina County Park by khyrre, on Flickr I got fed up with my Verizon Galaxy Nexus running like poo poo on Jelly Bean, so I flashed it to Kit Kat with an unofficial ROM. I went to redownload my VSCO Cam presets, and the Levi's pack is gone now. And since it was free, it wasn't part of my restored purchases. Edit: Good to know that they still haven't fixed the hosed up EXIF data on the Android app. Hmm, yes, my three-year-old phone has a f/0.19 aperture and can shoot at 12800 ISO

The lens blur thing in the new Android KitKat camera is pretty nifty. Louis' by khyrre, on Flickr Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden by khyrre, on Flickr These were taken with my Galaxy Nexus (a three-year-old phone at this point), but the artificial depth of field and the filmic VSCO filters make it look passable--in my humble opinion, anyway. Lens blur isn't perfect, though: you can see in the second shot that the background underneath the bottom flower is kinda messed up. Looking at it again, I should have eased up on the filters on the second image, although it's kinda hard to eyeball the processing on a little phone screen.
