Most Mustang launch parties are tonight if you're near a location with one. One of the programmers for it posted a list of general tips on Pinside. After having played it a bunch, I'm fairly fond of it. It feels different than the last crop (excusing Avengers) of Sterns, and the early code is already decent. While it certainly doesn't have the best art package, it definitely looks a lot better than the initial pictures. The different modes and races feel a bit more distinct than the Star Trek modes as well.

I even love the music that plays as you're playing: There's some alternate translite artwork out there that features the Metropolis robot. It's got that tacky "I'm learning photoshop" look to it with lens flares and ugly color choices, but it's still a touch above what the game actually used. I may just try my own hand at making a translite. The game is still in my car waiting to be set up...

If you need any other spare parts, we've got a spare playfield, so just let me know. Would offer the ramps too, but some guy on pinside had his stolen, and I sent ours to him.

It's almost certainly possible to just get a 3D printed or milled replacement (if you're willing to spend enough), but I think the real point is that having a 3D model of what it's supposed to be like allows you to handcraft a replica pretty closely instead of just eyeballing what it's supposed to be like. I mean it would not be too difficult to carve a ramp out of a block of wood if you knew exactly what the slope was supposed to be.

I think it's one of the few ramps you could print and it would look ok, because it's not transparent. I'd just assume if you have access to a 3d scanner, you'd have access to a printer as well. Even if you didn't, you could probably get 10 copies made and sell 9, and easily cover the cost. There's a company around here that makes 3D printers for around 2k. Been begging my workplace to get one. Instead they bought a giant color copy machine that doesn't have driver support in windows 7. Woo.

A couple of people now have suggested that he get his ramps 3D scanned, but where would one get that done? Would you just have to find someone with such a setup, or are there businesses that provide that service?

Google for a 3d print shop in your area, they can usually provide 3d scanning services as well.

Heck, I'd pay for it if someone had a set of Shadow rings and some Tommy blinders they'd like scanned. Been lookin' for those for 3 years now. If anyone can suggest anything else, I'll get it scanned if we have it. The problem with the W?D ramp is that it's clear. I think you have to sand the ramps once they're printed, meaning anything clear will come out, well, not.
|
# ? Apr 28, 2014 03:41 |

You can get transparent filament for 3d printers quite easily, the problem is that how the printing process works creates patterns in the output, which obscure visibility. You can print translucent objects, but not completely see-through ones. You might be able to get a solid block of clear plastic, mill it into the shape of the ramp, and polish the surface until it's transparent. Milling ABS plastic is apparently a big pain though.

Might easier in that case to create a negative and vacuform a replica.

Yeah, seems to be a lot of people looking for them or for ways to reproduce them successfully with not much luck as far as I can tell. As another suggested below vacuum forming may be the best idea. The ramp is huge and somewhat complicated which I guess does not help matters.

I didn't see it mentioned yet, but Black Rose and Fish Tales are out on the PS4. They look great and I hope the rest of season 3 gets added soon. Also, Farsight announced Diner as the winner of the people's choice vote. Since Junkyard has also been announced, I wonder what the remaining three season 3 tables will be? I'd like to see Jackbot.

Maybe by the time JJP gets to Lawlor's (unlicensed!) table, consoles/PC sales will be high enough that they can not bother with mobile devices.

I still don't get why they can't work with Stern on new titles. It's been a couple years since TPA got popular and you'd think they'd both benefit from an arrangement.

I'm pretty sure either Gary or the TPA people (or both) said that it's gonna happen at some point. If Mustang didn't have licensed music it'd probably be a pretty easy licensing get. There's also the matter of that SAM 2 platform games are too difficult to emulate on mobile. Given how slow TPA is to put out patches that'd mean also that there's the potential for a game to be stuck with inferior Stern launch software. This probably shouldn't be too big an issue on Steam, but given the lengthy amount of time it took the PS3 to get an update it might be a pain in the rear end on consoles. Essentially it sounds like both are interested but they are two ornery, slow companies.

I can't imagine a scenario where Farsight would have Addams as a late surprise. It'd be a huge seller and they know it, and as soon as they can possibly get it out there I'm sure they will. I've gotten pretty fond of the Williams Indiana Jones, and it's a real bummer that it looks like Disney properties are straight out for them. That said, if they were able to secure some sort of agreement with them, that'd net them a bunch of games (Three Star Wars, two Indiana Jones, Tron, all of the Stern Marvel games).

I went to Funspot over the weekend. Lots of their tables are busted, but they have a bunch, and it's only a quarter per game. I got to try Big Guns, which I'd never heard of before. It's a Python game. I like it a lot, and the art rules.

As much as I hate to break bad news to the hopefuls, we're about three tables away from the end of Season 3 and there hasn't been a Kickstarter to raise the funds to pay for licensing fees for Addams Family yet, soooo... probably not going to happen. The only way FarSight is going to get Addams Family is if they pull another Twilight Zone and raise money outside of table sales.

Yeah - Doctor Who is most likely out. They'd have to pay every actor whose likeness is on it, the BBC, and I wouldn't be surprised if they had to kick cash to Terry Nation's estate for usage of Daleks. Also, the newest crop of Zen Star Wars tables should be out later today, this time they're doing a four pack for the same price: Han Solo, A New Hope, Droids, and Masters of the Force. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImA-9iA451o

We are aggressively working to secure all the licenses needed to bring this widely popular table to The Pinball Arcade and with your continued support, we're optimistic that we will be able to add this holy grail of pinball to The Pinball Arcade in the near future! They were pretty careful with their language. This is also probably why we haven't seen another kickstarter in a while. Given how popular the table is, I'm sure they really want to land it but it's likely not that feasible. I'd love it if they did The Shadow, but I can't imagine that ever happening. Dredd isn't based on the movie franchise, just the comic, so maybe there's a bit of hope with that one.
