Teixeira I really didn't want it to have to come down to my hopes relying on Hendo Also didn't see it mentioned here, apparently Zuffa's starting to go after GIFs. Pressured UG's owner to tell that community to not post any from yesterday's event.

Copying an entire event is illegal, but surely this does not cover showing any miniscule part of an event? In the music industry, for example, an artist is allowed to use snippits of other songs in their own, so long as they aren't copying the entire thing. Honestly I despise all these laws and have zero respect for them, but cracking down on gifs really seems too far.

It doesn't really matter how much legal standing Zuffa has, if they decide to cut off the UG's gif posting they're going to do it because I can't imagine those guys being able to afford legal representation or wanting to get on Zuffa's bad side. Like look how long Dana has maintained a grudge on Josh Gross for spoilering some TUF poo poo years ago.

I think a big thing is that zuffa does not want knockout/finishes getting out. ESPN etc will get highlights but never finishes. They know most people want to see somebody get knocked out so they make you pay for those.

The Zuffa .gif thing is really dumb. I don't know how much Dana has to do with that stance, but his previous rants about the internet were pretty stupid. He's like Lars Ulrich during the Napster case right now. I don't know anyone who would watch a string of .gifs to replace a viewing experience. Also how many people who would buy the card the next day not watch it because they can see .gifs despite being able to read results? (since that is the tiny tiny market they are trying to protect apparently). Certain .gifs have gotten me to go back and watch fights I missed on fightpass or DVRed prelims. All the discussion aside, thinking you can stop people sharing 2 meg images on the internet is super stupid.

It's easy to forget at times that while Dana is the public face of the UFC, a lot of the decisions come down from Frank and especially Lorenzo. I mean I'm sure they share the same opinion on copyright infringement, but putting the blame all on Dana is kind of foolish when you consider how the UFC actually operates. Speaking of which, when was the last time we saw Frank Fertitta at a fight card? I can't remember seeing him ringside ever until last night.

Companies get locked into a mindset that every torrent or what have you is a lost purchase. For a % that will be true, but those people will probably pirate no matter what. For every one of them, I'd wager there's more people pirating PPV's who then start buying or going to places to watch them live as they get into the sport. Also for people that miss them they want them to purchase re-screenings of events. Not sure about elsewhere, but screenings after the event here (Australia) are the same price as a live PPV, so if you've missed it for whatever reason and invariably have the results spoiled it seems a bit steep.

Yeah re-broadcasts cost just as much as the full price PPV, they drop in price at some point way after the event is over.

That's specifically why I couched my statement with "I don't know how much Dana has to do with that stance". I know Dana doesn't make every decision that fans groan over like some people think. I only brought him up because a year or two ago he made some very naive statements about the internet in interviews. The main point is that trying to stop .gifs is both futile and stupid.

PPVs were down in 11 and 12 (2010 set the record for most PPVs sold by a single company in history) and up in 2013. They are down this year, but revenue for UFC will probably be up because their international business keeps expanding. Fight Pass is also doing better than their expectations.

It's a ton of content and they are adding more all the time.

drat, I just wanted to say the Davis/Rumble fight was insane. It looked like Davis was fighting up a weightclass - Rumble looked huge in comparison. I'm not sure if it was the second round or the third when Davis went for a takedown and Rumble just casually tossed him to the side. Not how I expected that fight to go. Really impressive performance by Rumble.
