I've posted them in this thread before but Royal Canoe just released a new video for their song 'Button Fumbla' and a really good friend of mine is in it (one of the backup singers). Plus they're touring North America with Bombay Bicycle Club this spring so everyone should check them out. It's a live video so it gives a little preview (they're really good live) http://www.popmatters.com/post/180868-royal-canoe-button-fumbla-live-video-premiere/

just coming here to reaffirm how fantastic Royal Canoe are. if anybody is out there reading this and still haven't checked them out, stop and reassess yourself. then, check out Nightcrawlers and Bathtubs by them. i plan on checking them out may 8th in NYC @ webster hall and hopefully it won't be the last time i see them.

Anyone planning on going to see them in Carrboro on May 12? It's a Monday which sucks considering it's a 3 hour drive from Charlotte, but I really love this band and I'm strongly considering it.

Wye Oak's new album Shriek is really good, totally different from anything else they have put out. If you haven't read, there was a focus on electronic instruments rather than the guitar driven amazingness they usually put out.

I've had the album on repeat the past couple of days; I think it drops off after "Glory" but kinda picks up again on the last two tracks.

Looking forward to seeing them do this live in a couple of weeks (I assume Jenn will break out a guitar and play some old stuff at some point).

I haven't heard the new album, but god drat. I'm excited to see them, should be a good time.

Saw Angel Olsen last night. Worth seeing if she comes around; the songs off "Half Way Home" done with a full band were fantastic, and she did two songs solo at the end. Was pretty good, though the crowd was pretty bad.

Glory might be the best song they've ever done, even if the rest of the album doesn't quite match Civilian.

Haven't seen Blood Cultures discussed here, figured I'd throw out the recommendation. Not a whole lot is out there about this guy (or group?) except a Bandcamp page, a Soundcloud page, three tracks and three pictures of someone with a black bag over their head to accompany them. His first song "Indian Summer" made some waves on blogs last fall and drew a lot of comparisons to Washed Out, which I think is fair as he makes very dreamy synth pop. Don't sleep on this guy, I've enjoyed everything he has put out so far. At this rate we might not get a new song until late summer but hopefully he'll make a bigger announcement sometime soon.

I did enjoy her show here last month, but be warned she has been canceling shows out of the blue to do others things. She moved two shows (two days after the show I saw her) in Ohio to the end of the year because she was asked to do the Nirvana induction and cancelled like another weeks worth of shows in London because Saturday Night Live asked her to be the musical guest. I understand big things like this can come up, but it's pretty lame to just dump on your fans like that.

I believe I would fault literally zero artists for canceling even with only 24 hours' notice if they had a chance to play SNL, because that's kinda major, even with SNL's diminished status.

It's almost been a year since The National's Trouble Will Find Me was released. What do you guys think of it relative to their earlier releases? Favorites on it include Don't Swallow the Cap and Pink Rabbits.

I consider Alligator (The Geese of Beverly Road got me into the band) and Boxer to be of equal quality in my mind. I'd put High Violet a hair below it with Trouble Will Find Me at the same level. I like Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers but it doesn't resonate as strongly as the other four. I'd need to listen to the self-titled again to judge it properly.

I'm pretty in line with you although I'd put Alligator above Boxer a bit (I think it's easily their best album).

Self titled is just...I could never get into it at all. Trouble Will Find Me is still good but even after a year I still feel like the songs just don't go where they could. They almost want to take off at times, but never leave the runway.

See, I'm the opposite, I can't really listen to anything BtS did pre-2000. Like, I didn't even like their old albums at the time. It's fair to say I listened to loving early Modest Mouse more than I did Perfect From Now On. But I really liked the last two albums, a lot.

That's super weird! I don't think I've heard of anyone with that opinion, so nice to meet you :)

I like a couple songs on the last album (Pat, Life's a Dream) and a couple songs from You In Reverse (Goin') but I was super disappointed with There is No Enemy. There are a couple reggae b-sides from that era that are waaaaay better. I also think they should get Phil Ek to produce their albums again. He's just super. I'm not a HUGE fleet foxes guy but the EP he produced for them is great.

It's going to be quite a while before the next BTS album, according to Doug. 2/5 of the band left right as they were finishing up an album and doug decided to scrap it all and start over. Right now they're just touring to show the new members the ropes and stuff.

Speaking of Modest Mouse, it has been SUPER long since their last album, which is supposed to come out soon. But there last EP was not really my cup of tea at all and their last album was only half good imo so I dunno!

This band isn't super similar but I feel like if you are a fan of either of those you might also like Margot and the Nuclear So & So's esp. Dust of Retreat.

Oh yeah, they're working on it. And with Big Boi from Outkast, no less! :haw:

I can't wait to hear how it sounds. The No One's First EP was just a collection of b-sides, half of them amazing and the other half duds. I like We Were Dead a lot but it's not even close to being my favorite of theirs, although I do probably like it more than Good News.

Also, rear end Catchum, have you ever seen videos of Built To Spill covering loving Edit The Sad Parts live? What a tease! :negative:

I saw Owen Pallet the other night and picked up a copy of his new record "In Conflict". It's pretty astonishing, and I've basically listened to nothing else since Tuesday. It's much more percussion heavy than "Heartland" and "He Poos Clouds," and the instrumentation is less symphonic and more electronic (likely at the hands of Brian loving Eno who plays on the album), but the arrangements are still tinged with all his neo-classical leanings. Very, very good stuff, and if anybody has the chance to catch him on this tour, you really should.

St Vincent on Jools Holland last night. Was a 1:1 reenactment of the live show, down to the choice of dress. I imagine tonight's SNL thing will be much the same.

If you're English, it's on iPlayer. If you're not English, you can do some magic and make the BBC think you are. I think it involves dressing your browser up with a monocle or something? But if you're a purist about this kind of poo poo and you're planning on seeing her live anyway, I'd give the TV appearances a miss actually. Since all the theatrics are there and I kinda believe they're meant to be a surprise since it's completely different to anything she's done before. Watching Jools or SNL might just spoil it a bit.

I'm still so sad I had pneumonia when I had tickets to see her.

Saw Wye Oak last night. Decent show, they put on a good one. The songs off "Shriek" weren't up to the standards that the songs off their older material was (as in, the songs were good, but the performance was just not as good as their performance of stuff off "Civilian" or "The Knot," but it was quality. The opener, Braids, was fantastic. I hadn't heard them before this so I was pleasantly surprised when they kicked all kinds of rear end. Definitely worth a listen if you like dreamy synthpop (which I really love).

I love St Vincent on record, but am I the only one who finds her current live choreographed schtick a little lame and cringey? You can tell she's been hanging out with David Byrne, but she doesn't really have the same charisma to pull it off and make it seem natural. I'm not hating too hard: her performance is awesome aside from that
