Well it makes sense on this page where he slams the drawer in the face of the ghost girl trying to help him, but he's facing left when he and Iris beat the stitched man into tiny pieces, which I don't really think was a bad idea.

Hergé famously did that very consistently in the Tintin series.

I suppose you could interpret that as the decision being Iris' rather than his, since she's the one who burst in there swinging, or it could suggest that something about this will come back to bite him--maybe the bones have to be burned and stomping on them just pissed it off? But he might just be screwing with us.

Here's my probably-reading-too-much-into-it support evidence for this theory:

Zane's outfit for most of this chapter. Two red straps from his suspenders...

And over that, a jacket and red scarf with the end trailing down the middle of his chest.

Zane has been wearing three red lines for this entire chapter.

That's my line of thinking as well. It's a classic bait and switch. Wadsworth asked to be scared, so here it is. Any minute now, everything's going to start getting bloody and full of holes, and then something's going to burst out of Mercy's skin and eat Wadsworth alive and screaming until he wakes up.

Was looking through book one and I found this.

Specifically the first panel.

And also every time he says he doesn't know how to play/doesn't know the rules, he's facing left.
