Wasn't it a very big deal years ago when South Park had an episode where they (meaning cable tv) could finally say 'poo poo' uncensored?

In season 5 they had an episode "It Hits the Fan" where the word 'poo poo' was said uncensored 162 times in the episode. That was back in 2001.

However, that kind of illustrates my point. They were always ALLOWED to say it (from a regulatory perspective) because there's no regulation of content on cable by the FCC since it's a private network. It was all down to what the channel itself allowed. South Park ran with that because that's the kind of thing they do. Comedy Central was largely ok with it simply because it was South Park (which was already known to be wildly offensive) and it was being advertised as such. The original concept of the episode was only to say it a few times and Comedy Central wouldn't allow it. But, because they decided to do it in excess, it was now allowed because of context.

Basically, people knew what they were getting into when they watched the episode, so the risk of backlash over the content was lower.

Now though, its being allowed in shows that aren't explicitly setting out to be shocking or necessarily have a mature audience warning on them. Continuum is tamer than most network shows nowadays, they just happen to use the word 'poo poo' because that's how normal people talk. Up until very recently, that wouldn't be allowed by the network and be censored out because people wouldn't be expecting to find language in a time traveling science fiction show that was otherwise not especially graphic or violent. But there's definitely a change in culture happening on these networks where they realize some casual swearing isn't going to scare off their advertisers or viewers.

Maybe I'm mis-remembering, but wasn't it also spurred on by some other show making a big deal about how they were gonna say 'poo poo' uncensored? I always remembered it as being a reaction to that. Sort of making fun of how the other show was acting like it was such a huge amazing deal to say the word poo poo, so instead of making a big deal about saying it once, they just said it over and over again until it completely lost all meaning?

Anyway eventually we're gonna get to the point where kids tv shows are dropping f bombs left right and center. I can't wait.

Chicago Hope said 'poo poo' for the first time on network TV in 1999. It was two years later, but this episode was largely lampooning the hype around that event.

It wasn't technically making fun of the show directly since it was a risk for Chicago Hope to do that since they are under FCC regulation, but they were making fun of everyone's reaction to it.

The problem with the FCC regs are that they are vague and rely on context.

quote:

An average person, applying contemporary community standards, must find that the material, as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest;

The material must depict or describe, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable law; and

The material, taken as a whole, must lack serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value.

So, what the FCC deems obscene can shift with cultural shifts because the very first test is a against contemporary community standards.

Even when they define some hard metrics (times when obscene language is forbidden), the definition isn't hard and defined.

quote:

The FCC has defined profanity as including language so grossly offensive to members of the public who actually hear it as to amount to a nuisance. Like indecency, profane speech is prohibited on broadcast radio and television between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

So, basically, if your audience doesn't care, you are in the clear. But, it also allows a loud but small minority to cause major issues and get shows in trouble over content.

Cable TV can do pretty much whatever it likes short of airing hardcore porn (and if there's even a limit on that, I think there are watershed hours when it's okay). The only thing that has ever kept cable channels back is their own individual S&P's out of fear of losing advertisers / not being carried by service providers.

Sometimes it doesn't even need full cultural shifts to happen. In case people had forgotten, Janet Jackson's boob coming uncovered at the Superbowl singlehandedly scaled back what the FCC allowed on Network TV. Before that you had a few shows like NYPD Blue showing bareass and the like. And it led to them making another (thankfully unsuccessful) attempt to get control of content on cable.

They really have though.

Up until really recently, only a few networks (eg. FX, AMC) let a few of their flagship shows (eg. Archer, Breaking Bad, TWD) say 'poo poo' on a regular basis. There were one-ofs here and there, but by and large it was still usually bleeped or muted.

For whatever reason, that suddenly changed in the past 6 months. Adult Swim especially doesn't seem to care anymore and it started with 'Rick and Morty.' Even the most recent season of 'The Venture Brothers' had poo poo censored. However, ever since R&M, they've let all their new episodes use poo poo uncensored.

Same is with Syfy. Continuum was censored for the first two seasons, but they are letting it go this year. I'm pretty sure Being Human said poo poo a few times in its last season as well. BBC-A is another one, they used to censor even James May saying 'cock' on Top Gear, but now they let all the language go.

I think the networks saw that the highest rated shows on cable really didn't bother to censor anything and it wasn't scaring off advertisers.

Meanwhile, Comedy Central still usually bleeps 'poo poo' on the Daily Show and Colbert.

Fair enough. I guess I've just been lucky with my pick of shows, as the only one you mentioned that censors poo poo that I watch regularly is Venture Bros and I didn't recall them doing it (they tend to use the censor bleeps themselves as a joke, like on Operation P.R.O.M, so I probably didn't think twice about it).

If you skip the first season of Always Sunny then you skip the introduction of the McPoyles. That alone to me is enough reason to watch the very short first season. But its a good season all on its own. Its much more grounded and less insane but so is Season 2 when Devito joins the cast. Part of the joy of the show is watching the characters go progressively more insane through the years. Watching them in Season 1 where they actually resemble normal human beings is part of that.

I love New Girl and 30 Rock, but yeah, if you're as ignorant to pop culture as Ravane has presented him/herself as then you're really not going to get something like 50% of what 30 Rock is serving up.

And yeah, there's a lot in the 1st Season of Always Sunny to make it worth watching. I just thought the McPoyles and seeing the Gang be semi sane human beings are the two biggest takeaways. But yeah, The Gang Finds A Dead Guy is a classic and there's a lot of other important/classic things in there.

IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY... has had low spots, to be certain, but owes a lot of its acclaim to that calm wavelength of consistency you mention. Further, any and all SEINFELD comparisons ever are apt as they are unquestionably father and son.
