You guessed exactly right. Execs seem to take it as a point of pride that they don't personally schedule any meeting no matter how trivial and god forbid if they are forced to interact directly with any of their direct reports.

Lync meetings and how complicated people make them. I hate Lync meetings with a passion. Why would we ever need to setup a meeting without an employee present? I don't know either but it's imperative that we can. Also secretaries cant setup more than one a meeting at the same time since they have to be online to allow people to conference in. Why the employees who request the secretary to schedule a meeting can't just do that themselves remains a mystery.

A couple co-workers were having a good laugh the other day. "Remember when we had admins who actually scheduled things? Ha ha ha hah. Phew, thank goodness they don't do that now. It would be a mess. It's way easier for me to manage my own schedule in Outlook."

I just had our newest project manager ask me to forward him some information on a project plan. He stated that because he started this project he needs to be looped in on everything.

"Started" this project, what? We're buying servers and storage because everyone in the company agrees we need servers and storage, I don't think anyone gets to claim they started this. I think he was in the room when the budget was hammered out but even that I'm not sure of.

Well I mean, there is one "The Internet" but that's not the case for intranets. There are many of them, so the word naturally has a plural form.

Edit: Also, I think "the social intranet" is called "The Internet," if we're being technical here.

True, however maybe it's just a a matter of how it's used?

I wouldn't say "our agency has several intranets" since even if you have different networks, it's still one intranet.

Shift delete works in the gui in *nix systems also. It's pretty universal.

Unless he's a giant neckbeard who refuses to use the gui in a *nix environment. Don't get me wrong, I use rm more than shift+delete, but cmon man, it's a universal shortcut!

I and my fellow computer monkey teammates were informed today that we are going to be the Commvault Admins and responsible for monitoring the backup system, as well as do mailbox restores and provide emails for investigators as requested. As I was sitting in the meeting giving us a Commvault 101 tutorial I couldn't help but wonder how the gently caress they think I will have anything to do with it after they cut my pay by 35% and told me the reason for it was because I was just going to be a glorified button-pusher, with occasional forays into hard drive replacement and the ever-important duty of escorting technicians to do the real work when a server needs repaired. I was also left scratching my head why we were going to be doing this when they have 40 or so Exchange Administrators who, I would think, might have more of a vested interest in working with users where email is concerned.

I have yet to see anything change from my previous duties, although we have been decommissioning legacy servers at a sprint, so in another month there should no longer be any remote physical boxes that need us to patch them. Even so I still have to monitor DAT files and manually patch them when McAfee fucks up, I still have to remediate vulnerabilities that are reported, I still have to monitor Tivoli and investigate down servers, I still have to monitor Cisco UCS and repair any faults in the virtual infrastructure, and I still have to monitor all our servers on SIPRnet and repair them when anything goes wrong.

At this point it looks like the only thing I can think of is that the officers higher up in the food chain are deliberately trying to turn our detachment into a giant turd that no one wants to work at. Seriously - who the gently caress is going to work for $32k doing everything I do and possessing a Secret security clearance? If that's the case, they're doing a drat fine job, because they've actually dropped below establishment and more people are leaving every day. This place is going to be a shell, and the sad thing is there isn't anyone else to pick up the slack. By the time they figure out this was the worst thing they could have done there will be no one willing to come back to reconstitute the detachment. But I guess since their stated goal has been to shut the detachment down since 2006 then when they can't retain anyone they can give a petulant little sigh and complain that no one wants to do any real work anymore and then sign the orders to shutter the place at long last.

I cannot wait to get the gently caress out of here. Hell, I've applied for a End User Support Specialist role at the local university, and if I get it I would be making $8k more a year. How loving pathetic is that?

It didn't used to be that way. It was a great job and I felt the Air Force truly respected the work we performed. In fact, all of this came at us out of the blue. For months before our contract was due to end our leadership kept telling everyone to start working on their certs (MCSA/MCSE/CCNA/etc) because things were about to take off. Then suddenly a week before the contract ends we're told that the government is optioning the right to extend it until August 2015 (15 months). Everyone is pleased with these developments, but then the day before the original contract end date management walks in and holds an all-hands meeting to let us know the poo poo has hit the fan and the government is pulling a Darth Vader and unilaterally changing the deal and wants a brand new contract.

The first defections occur in just a few days, and not a day doesn't go by when at least one person announces they are leaving. Notices are usually for 1-2 days, some as much as a week. One person actually gave three weeks notice. To call the disruption of these people leaving catastrophic is an understatement. When it all began I was sort of in the middle age-wise of the people in my team. At 42 I am now the youngest person on my team - all the younger members have left, and some oldtimers from other departments have taken even more massive paycuts than I to get on the team rather than walk. The team lead, assistant team lead, and the guy on 2nd shift are the only ones with more time on the team, but other than the assistant team lead I am the most knowledgeable and experienced member - hell, I'm the one who usually passes out assignments, serves as the first contact for any hardware failures, and usually gets picked to be the primary person for any new tasks we get assigned (it was gratifying at first, but now it's really loving old and engendering some increasing anger issues, especially after the paycut).

It's been a very stressful time for me, and frankly I don't think I can last financially more than 3-4 months in this job before I have to find a second job to make ends meet. I've sent out at least 50 resumes and applications for jobs within a 60 mile radius, but I've only had 3 phone interviews and 1 in-person in the last month. So yeah, going to helldesk might suck, but at least I'll be able to afford to pay my bills.

I'm desperately trying to keep my head on straight and finish up my VCP, but it's gotten to the point a few times when I would come home at 6pm and just go to bed because I couldn't be bothered to even watch TV, let alone study for a few hours.
