If cost of living in Ohio is anything like not-chicago Illinois then 50k allows for a pretty comfortable life and isn't too bad for a junior position. Not saying it's fantastic or anything but it's probably reasonable depending on experience. 32k is bullshit though.

guppy posted:That isn't great pay for that role. Yea... Especially for someone with at least a secret. Now, I know there is a glut of people with clearances post Iraq and Afghanistan but still. I made a well into six figures during my summer camp time. I'm back into six figures after retiring for three years and picking up a refresher job that paid around thirty percent less but with a completely poo poo oncall situation. Got pinged on LinkedIn about this gig about six months ago and ran with it. No oncall, had to stay late like twice in the past four months, no weekend work. This is for an org that realizes it is a multinational around the world business and it needs personnel to run it properly.

What can I say? My company pays for poo poo when it's not the primary for the contract, and while $50k wasn't an incredible amount it certainly did allow me to live rather comfortably. Of course, that's in the past now so I'm spending most of my days studying for my VCP in the hopes something will come along. Unfortunately the only calls I've been getting are from headhunters who think I'd be a great fit for a helpdesk job in Cleveland or a desktop support role in Atlanta paying an astounding $14.50/hr The only upside to any of this is that I get to throw yet another line on my resume about overseeing Commvault backups and doing Exchange mailbox restores. God help me.

I certainly hope so - I spoke with a Robert Half recruiter the other day and I'm scheduled to do a Skype one-on-one with him on Wednesday, but the little toad flat-out told me that the best I could expect with my skillset was in the $20-25/hr range, then explained that he'd love for me to make more money since that would make him more money, but in his one year of experience doing recruiting after just graduating from college with a degree in CIS it just wasn't very likely. Had to put a cork in my mouth before I told him to piss off, but it was a near thing.

The contracts are not employee-friendly (well, contractor, I guess) and the pay is always poo poo. I only stay connected to a couple of their recruiters on LinkedIn so that I can see the jobs they post and then ask someone I know at that company if the job is worth it. It usually isn't - RH posts "systems engineer" jobs that are actually second-shift helpdesk, and other assorted shenanigans. Come over here to Cbus! Where there's like 3 employers and everyone knows everyone.

Yeah gently caress Robert Half. I get all dressed up, pay for parking downtown, they make me fill out tax paperwork and poo poo, interview, and then tell me they're looking to fill a .NET dev position that pays... $13/hr.

My 6 month stint with Robert Half wasn't too horrible. The first contract paid ok and the second was a contract to hire that landed me my current permanent position, so it's not all bad. Totally depends on the client, I would guess.

I feel bad too as I haven't been able to read this thread in a couple months, we had something at my company (in Columbus) that Daylen would have been good for, but we just hired a guy Thursday. I will say the job market here is better than anywhere else in Ohio for tech people, just avoid Robert Half (as others have said) and I'd probably not plan on being at Chase very long if you end up there, though it is good for starting to develop contacts throughout the city.

My reason for taking time off is "Because I have days available." EDIT: My job doesn't ask anything, for the record. Reason: "Need a day away from stupid loving administrative requirements that serve no useful business purpose." It could also be fun to let them know via this mechanism when you have a medical appointment. Be sure to provide details, and remind them that because they asked, whatever process and system they're using must be HIPAA compliant. Have fun with that certification, assholes.

Man I love my bosses PTO policy. Here's how I took last Wednesday off. On Tuesday, "Hey boss, I'm gonna take tomorrow off, it's in my calendar and I've got no meetings or work due, see ya Thursday!" I've got 2 weeks already scheduled out in October for a vacation and he's even offered to let me make up extra time so I don't have to use all my PTO up for the trip.

Reason for requested time off: code:
Every so often I need to bail anywhere from 10-30 minutes early (riding the bus *sucks*), and my supervisor is "whatever". Every time I take off an entire day at a time, it's "WHO WILL COVER WE NEED VOLUNTEERS EMERGENCY" . Every time I return from taking a day or more it's on my end trying to clean up/catch up again. Oh look, I'm out all next week. Luckily, I have alcohol already. And unlike ex-cow-orkers, I'll be doing my drinking at home...

Reason for time off: "Feelin' fine." And then take the completed form, put it back into the paper tray, and print out a page packed with ominous crazy sounding words and phrases (All work and no play, REDRUM, It Puts The Lotion On Its Skin, etc.) in an eggshell or very very very very pale yellow. Something visible if you really pay attention or hold it up to a light, but not to a casual skimming of the document.
