Yeah paypal is super sketchy. When I was botting diablo 3 I moved around $25,000 through paypal and at one point my account got locked with a few grand sitting in it (I withdrew regularly but this was a bad moment) and I was sweating pretty hard. Luckily I managed to convince them to generously allow me access to my own money in the end. I still keep a few hundred in paypal just because it's convenient for a lot of things, but I treat it as cash that can disappear at any time.

All so he could play some MMO all the time, which ultimately ate what little money he had directly (sub fees/buy 2 win crap) and indirectly (eating out a few times a week so he could play more). After a period of just not showing up to work he eventually lost his job and had to move away. He was otherwise a pretty cool dude and did eventually grow out of it, but that whole period was pretty  I think I got a free LCD monitor out of it though so I'll call it a wash.

I'm the luckiest person in the world, though, and we got the cash back just in time to buy a house in 2009. Then we split up a year later and I paid him out half his share of equity in the house. Then my home value appreciated another $100k. My lucky star is as invincible as SloMo's delusions.

Yeah it's dirt simple to just open a no fee savings account at an online bank and auto transfer funds there. The ultimate in out of sight out of mind might be having it setup on the payroll side before it gets to your account. That's a pretty common recommendation for people who get raises.

We're not that bad at saving or anything. My wife trusts me to make the financial decisions for our household, and I wanted to surprise her with something nice down the road. In fact, our SmartyPig just crossed the 50% goal for our new house fund! It took 16 months, but we're getting closer every day.

Me. That person is me. After playing around with an online cash flow/tracking tool from my bank on a whim, I found out my average dining+grocery costs for this year have been around $1000 per month for a single person and I'm sure it's been that way for a while. I knew I ate out a lot, but it was easy to ignore since pretty much everything is financially in-order. That's what the cost of convenience is when you don't pay attention. I guess the moral of the story is that it's worth keeping an eye on where your money is actually going even if the sum of all the numbers ends up looking sane at the end of the month.

I was always a bit nervous taking afternoons off for "appointments" (interviews), during my last job. I didn't give my two weeks until i had recieved and sent back the signed offer. Generally they ask when you can start, and that's when you give yourself a couple weeks. Speaking of bad with money. My brother went to college for CS, graduating right at the .com crash. Then went to university for CS, right up to finishing his thesis for his masters, but dropped out. Never really working in his field, but still racking up solid 5 figure debt in student loans. And instead of working on getting a job in his field, or paying down his debt, what money he did make beyond, and even sometimes more, he spent on comics, anime, and figurines. Resulting in multiple threats from my parents of kicking him out (still lives at home). He just recently got some work through our dad, and spent 360 dollars on some figurines and comics. It seems he's content being low enough income to qualify for support payments that cover his interest, and a bit of principle on his loans. Meanwhile I've paid off my loans, saved an emergency fund, and am working on getting my retirement savings going. While paying 400 R&B. I just have to remind myself that it's better to not need the assistance he gets from our parents, but even I wanted to yell at him over that last purchase. It reminds me of when my brother was watching Everybody Hates Chris and at one point they really hammer home that it was the 80s - His mother says in one episode "It's OK, I'll just go down to the job centre and get myself a part time job". And I was just thinking "Yeah, like it's that easy anymore. I wish" Also I am pretty bad with money but I finally got myself a savings account (High interest for the first year but the catch is that I can't touch it until the end of the first year in November). I currently have between £400-500 in my main account (and it kinda hovers there) but I have roughly that in the savings account as well, so it feels nice that it'll be there accruing interest for November. Also I'm on a job contract that last at least until november so I have at least got stability until then while I find something better.

The guy at work I mentioned prior pays $250 a week for some type of lease on his Nissan Navara. All up he would have paid around $60k for it. I can't get specific details because he is pretty unaware of the details of his loan contract, so I am not even sure what type of lease it is, but I know he was suckered into something real bad. The topic came up after he said he skipped a car payment to buy some weed and he was 'pretty high right now'...hahah.

It has to be another country. I've never heard of a Navara so I looked it up. Can't remember if I've already posted here, but my sister in law is horrific with money. Her and her husband both live in the black hole of Detroit and refuse to leave because "everything is here!" She's constantly posting on Facebook about being broke but they refuse to do anything to change their situation like move or go to school so they can work better than poo poo jobs, etc. They don't have a lot of debt, but they never have any money because any extra money they do have goes to stupid poo poo and booze/weed/cigarettes. I'm not fundamentally against vices like that, but if straits are that dire, I would think one could prioritize a little bit better. I'd love to go vacation in Colorado and legally use weed, but the difference is that my husband and I each have real jobs where we pay our bills, save money, and therefore have wiggle room for some recreational vice fun. Also, my SIL just had a miscarriage (which in normal instances I would find to be very sad and stuff--so I'm not completely heartless, I swear!) but if they can't afford to take care of themselves I don't know how they'd raise a baby. Since neither of them has a good job I know they'll be part of the crowd that doesn't pay medical bills and makes costs go up for everyone else and they'd probably be asking for money and baby items too. My husband even tried to explain to her on the phone that for now, it might be for the best even if it doesn't seem that way. I feel bad because when I was growing up my parents never touched any money that was mine. If I got gift money I had my own bank account. When I had a part time job in high school/college I didn't have to give my paychecks to my parents so they could put food on the table. I was just encouraged to save it toward college or traveling or something I wanted to do for myself. My husband's family is completely different--his dad, my SIL and SIL's husband all would ask for money if they smelled it, so we really have to downplay the things we do so that they leave us alone. Before my husband wised up, they took really horrible advantage of his paycheck (which being lower enlisted Army isn't exactly rolling in cash). In fact, I had to block SIL on my Facebook just so that when I go traveling next month for about 3 weeks, she isn't calling us asking us to send money because I can "afford" to do that (my plane ticket was $240, hostels I'm splitting with a friend and I'll pay about $100/week, street food and grocery I'll only need about $15/day in Central America, so VERY cheap trip where I'll probably spend just over $1,000, and I have an online job so I'm taking no time off work to pay my way, but they're ignorant and don't know these things). I didn't mean for this to be so long, sorry about that! It's just annoying to deal with.

She already knows the SIL is a waste of life, there needn't be anymore tests carried out to prove otherwise. People like this are so entrenched in the culture of poverty that even if they won the powerball tomorrow they'd be back to broke in two years MAX. The only thing that can help them is education and a necessity to change their ways but they sound plenty content drinking, blazing, and mooching.
