Pretty dull compared to the raving lunatics you lot are friends with, but dumb nonetheless. I hate how people shove cancer awareness into every stupid facebook 'game'.

That's exactly what it is, I don't know enough about it to have an opinion on it but a lot of people I know who took the time to look up stuff about it tell me it's not that great. Sorry, but not everyone does subtraction like that, and yeah, it seems a pretty absurd way to do it me. Using your '63 - 27' example, my thought process is '60 - 20 = 40' '43 - 7 = 36', the idea of adding poo poo up never really springs to mind at all.

That's because you were taught like that when you first started. The new method is easier for people who are coming from a blank slate and are just starting to learn math. The steps are more apparent to them, especially when doing more complex numbers, like 6 or 10 digit problems.

Yeah I'll be the first to admit I'm not a big fan of Common Core, but that mostly has to do with the implementation (a lot of it is tied up in No Child Left Behind-esque poo poo) rather than the content.

I personally don't think CC goes far enough, but as for what's actually in there, all it is is a re-emphasis on skill development rather than rote memorization. A lot of the stuff in CC is stuff teachers were doing on their own anyway, this just makes it formal.

My central point was that this "complicated" system was, in fact, really not that complicated at all, and that a lot of adults already did it that way, even if they didn't realize it. If you personally didn't, that's fine! It was just part of a larger push to teach students multiple ways of doing something as a way of building a foundation for number theory later. The perception (one I agree with) is that curriculum had become too focused on just memorizing formulas and using them over and over, rather than explaining why something was done the way it was.

Common Core reminds me of the ACA in a lot of ways. There's some objectionable stuff in there, it's maybe a step in the right direction, but there's much more to be done. Instead objections come in the form of OBAMMAAAAA! :argh:

Common Core is just an attempt to change the way certain subjects are taught to make kids think out the process they use and learn how apply frameworks to other situations instead of memorizing.

One example is getting rid of the multiplication table. Kids are currently timed to take a multiplication table where they have to solve 1x1, 1x2, 1x3, etc, all the way up to 12x12. This just incentivises kids to memorize their time tables, but not actually learn math skills. The point of the math exercise is to let kids learn how to multiply and divide large numbers without having to carry the 1 or use long division on a sheet of paper. The process is emphasized.

The English standards follow the same principle. Currently, they ask kids to read a writing sample and then answer questions based on the sample. Again, this just encourages kids to memorize or learn how to pull facts quickly, which are useful skills, but does not teach them critical thinking. Under Common Core and English prompt would be something like:

"In the story, the town had the choice to build a library at a location that was cheaper, but farther away from school or a location that was more expensive and closer to school. What choice did the school make and why? What are the advantages and disadvantages to each location and which would you choose? Why is your choice ultimately the best?"

Whereas now, it is something like "On page 6 the school made a decision on where to build a certain building. What building was it and what choice did they make?"

I'm a social studies/history teacher, and for us the goal is to give the students experience reading primary source documents such as the Declaration of Independence. We hope that this will translate to being able to read reports in the working world. I agree wholeheartedly with the goal of the Common Core. My only concern, however, is that in the usual hamfisted nature of education legislation, we will transition our system so entirely that students no longer memorize anything at all. Yes, it is incredibly important for students to learn skills that are applicable to the real world, but if in the process they do not remember vital facts and data, we will have a problem.

Basically we need to do everything.

Yeah, I think that's really the problem with trying to explain objections with Common Core, the real answer is exactly what you said, but the rhetoric is painted as "NO YOU MUST PICK ONE OR THE OTHER, ALL IN MOTHERFUCKER!"

Picking "Option C: We need to overhaul everything." isn't really an option :(

Getting rid of the multiplication table is a horrible mistake. Canada's provinces, except Québec, stopped making students memorize the multiplication table a few years ago. Math scores have fallen dramatically in English Canada and remained steady in Québec. It's a perfect natural experiment that demonstrates one of the key "innovations" of Common Core is terrible.

This is not the place, if you'd like to reply to me please do so in the American Politics thread.
