JUMPMASTER This backboard/table kills me. Edit: Also, I fired up TBA on my PS3 the other day and holy poo poo 90% of the tables have updates that you have to individually open the game, direct to the PSN and download... It's so so so annoying. Why couldn't they release one patch that updates all the tables? I tried going to the PSN and just grabbing them all, but they're nowhere to be found. Awful. And to add insult to injury, you can't download anything while you're playing. DevCore fucked around with this message at 16:57 on May 14, 2014 |

The other benefit to getting the PC version (besides portrait mode, which is awesome) is that you can pretty easily make a controller with real side pinball buttons (excuse the lovely blurry photo):

But it's a bit of a pain for me to set-up Windows to rotate the monitor properly.

I'll need to play around with that, I haven't bothered with it yet. In other news, the Medieval Madness Remake factory labor is being done on the Stern line but with Williams recreated parts and with a different QC team. Really, the most interesting thing about this news to me is that it really means that this is absolutely going to happen and probably on schedule. If it goes well for all parties involved, we'll probably see a bunch more Williams remakes entering the market.

I really like the iPad version the best and it's the one I play most, but I'll be damned if extra functions are a pain in the rear end to press (like Magna-Saver from Black Knight).

Stern is partnering with Planetary Pinball and Chicago Gaming to manufacture the Medieval Madness remake. I imagine this'll help prevent the kinds of delays that JJP has run into with its Wizard of Oz table.Stern's Facebook Page posted:Planetary Pinball, Chicago Gaming and Stern Pinball announce Specialty Manufacturing Arrangement https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152406570289244&set=a.386178974243.167508.136972659243&type=1

That's pretty exciting news. It seems like Stern's factory is pretty good at pumping out the machines with little delay and this will really benefit Planetary Pinball. Here's hoping it does cut down on smaller pinball companies running into issues with manufacturing. If this works out well, it could bode well for a lot of the smaller companies producing machines, like Dutch Pinball perhaps. As Clouseau mentioned as well, hopefully this will lead to seeing more Williams remakes out on the market. It will give a lot of people that never got to experience the quality of Williams tables in their hey-day a new chance to try them out.

Pinside folks have pointed out that there are a bunch of Big Bang Bars going up for sale right now, so they surmised that there might be a BBB remake in the wings. That would require them to get the rights for Capcom remakes from the guy who initially remade them years back though, and that might be fairly difficult. Planetary Pinball has also mentioned that there's some other potential crazy stuff coming like a DMD'd Funhouse with new rules and other crazy remakes. I'd love to see new stuff on the market, but good on them to make a partnership that will definitely ensure their project's completion. Also, in addition to temp files for Lights Camera Action in the steam files for TPA, there's also files indicating that High Roller Casino (2001 Stern) is also coming up soon. Never played it, I would have liked to see DE Time Machine or maybe Sharkey's Shootout.

I dig the idea of revamping old machines with new amenities, like Dutch Pinball's Bride of Pin-Bot 2.0. Since they're working with established tables that already have parts, playfields and other aspects available, it's easier for these smaller companies to build something new upon the foundations of tables already made. I would like to see some new stuff too but I'm always interested in seeing what people can do to old tables. I'm excited about the prospect of seeing a DMD'd Funhouse and what they could do with it. Plus, though revamping these old machines, it may help the small companies to build up funds and assets in order to start producing their old tables. As excited as I am about Dutch Pinball's Big Lebowski table, it concerns me that they are asking for a $8500 deposit on a name and idea alone. If they aren't able to get the funds, will this table ever come out? Look at the delays Wizard of Oz suffered from. I fear that Big Lebowski may never even see the light of day. They've released mock-ups of the playfield but I would be concerned with putting down a couple grand without seeing something more substantial.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man I'm somewhat surprised about the lack of a big reproduction scene in pinball. The digital pinball scene is better than ever, and I wonder if that's driving a surge of interest in the hobby?

The Stern-MMR deal is great news. They have the resources in place to crank out machines and it keeps the lines running. I think the rights to Capcom might be easier to acquire. The guy who owns them filed bankruptcy and might be forced to liquidate. On the other hand he's a little crazy and seems to get off on hoarding things from pinball collectors so maybe those odds are slimmer. It'd be an interesting title to reproduce but I've heard the game is really nothing special.

Completely anecdotally I'd say that stuff like Zen Pinball and TPA are driving a lot of people to the hobby (they reignited my love of pinball for sure), but that's not all of it. One big thing I'd say is that the generation of kids that got to play games during pinball's last huge peak in the early nineties are all in their late twenties and thirties and can now buy machines/ are excited by the prospect of pinball in a barcade. If Stern is going to cling to life during the next drop in the market, they need to make sure that their machines get somewhere where kids could get a hold of them.

Didn't the BBB remake use NOS boards? I wonder what a new one would use, considering that a clean capcom power driver board is 400 bucks. I'd like to see remakes of the big classics but without toys, I can't be the only bastard who doesn't care about 'em. In other news, I wish they'd bring Black Knight's brothers to TPA. Jungle Lord, Pharaoh and Solar Fire. I just picked up a Jungle Lord and it is very fun. The art is kind of awful but it's a great game.

The Medieval Madness is using Planetary's new board sets, so i'd expect they'd just run the ROM's in an emulator on their CPU and let their new driver boards take care of the rest. Course the bigger problem is the Capcom security ROM which supposedly cannot be cracked, not sure if that can be done under emulation. This was the reason given for not running more BBB or going ahead with the Kingpin run, as they couldn't make anymore Security Roms, so no more actual Capcom CPU boards. There could be code for Williams boards for BBB out there though, as Williams owned the rights and was thinking of running BBB between Star Wars Ep.1 and Wizard Blocks. Lyman Sheats supposedly did some code for it.

For Junkyard, anyone have any deep strategies? Other than avoiding assembling the toast gun for as long as possible to keep the video mode the easy one, there aren't any real protips that I can figure out or find elsewhere. It sure "feels like" I'm missing subtleties with the table, but damned if I can figure out what they are.

Me and a group of friends at work have been getting into pinball a lot lately (thanks to all the Chicago barcades that have been popping up), and we've done a few mini tournaments among us. I have access to a 3d printer, so I've made trophies for a few of them, and thought I'd share: ^ The last one is my favorite by far; I went all out and incorporated sound and lights into it - the right flipper button activates 2 pulsing RGB LEDs, and the left one plays a sound clip: http://youtu.be/UW2QdH94oAA

Even better you could model a 3d extruded layout of some simple shapes and stuff to represent bumpers, lanes, flippers, etc, so it has something to roll down through. You could also take the springs from some click pens and make a working plunger to shoot the ball with.

Not sure if I really like the ruleset, but its got some fun shots.

On the real machine you want to do Run from Spike once or maybe twice if you're good at it, after that you want to assemble the toaster gun. I always start with the cuckoo clock to start the time machine mode and hope for the AFM videomode.

From what I've been able to find, it looks like pinballs are generally one and one-sixteenth inches in diameter, and made of (I think) polished steel. The powerball in Twilight Zone is ceramic -- are there any other games with unusual ball sizes or materials?

Does Hercules using a cue ball count?

# ? May 16, 2014 13:55 |

Hercules used a pool ball for a ball iirc. But apart from that the standard pinball has been a 1 1/16" chromed steel ball for ages. Some older games have a smaller (15/16") ball that is part of the tilt mechanism. It rests on a rail inside the cabinet, and if you lift the game it would roll forward, close a switch and cause the game to slam tilt. Kinetic arcade games (pitch and bat games, bowling games, etc) that aren't true pinballs have used similar steel balls of varying sizes. vvv Oh yeah, forgot about the mini-playfield on FG/Shrek Collateral Damage fucked around with this message at 14:11 on May 16, 2014 |

There is a 5/8" ball used on mini-playfields in I believe Family Guy and Shrek (probably more). Also the LE version of Avatar and Rolling Stone supposedly uses a ceramic powerball like in TZ. It's called Navi ball in Avatar and The Rolling Stone in Rolling Stone. I've never played the LE version of either though so not sure how it comes into play.

I really don't like video modes. I'm glad they are not appearing in newer games. The only one that seems decent is Black Rose. If Lights, Camera, Action is the next game, that's pretty cool. When I was a kid there was one at the local bowling alley. It had these huge spotlights on top that you could set off (I think those came in all the games?). Only gripe is that I'm not sure these lower tier Gottlieb tables are worth $5 a pop. Would be nice for them to go back to $3 and use the $5 for the bigger name titles. I'll probably buy it either way as I'm a sucker for tables.
