The best thing was then the guy in the studio goes to throw it to Esther at around the 9 minute mark, doesn't get any response, and then is just like "I'm sure she's fine," I assumed she was in getting fluids in Medical or passed out.

So, I'm on the last didactic day of Corps school. It was supposed to be a movie day, before we start clinicals next week, but because one single person talked during muster, we get to sit completely silently in a room and stare at a wall. 2.5 hours down, 5.5 hours to go. loving poo poo. Every HM1 and HM2 teaching at this school makes me wonder how bad it's going to be in the hospital. At least I get to go to lab tech school after this.

Don't worry. Just keep your head down and you'll be fine. Most techs are ghosts at whatever command they end up at, even the smaller ones. Hell, here in Lemoore the techs go entire contracts never meeting each other until they go to check out.

Yeah, they're all FMF here, and one dude that was dive med that's chill as gently caress. Every other instructor we've had talks about kicking in doors and shooting people in the face, even though they've had one deployment to Iraq in 2011 where they worked at a BAS, and spent the rest of the time doing sick call at Lejuene. It's a pretty dead giveaway that they show videos of their FMTB class to show how hardcore they are. I'm just tired of this place, I hope C school is better.

Someone got you a obnoxiously racist av.

poopkitty posted:

But seriously, which parts are incorrect? I saw it as mostly opinion, but I'm curious.

Here's one way of putting it:

His assertion is that the natural state of a bunch of generally young dudes is roughhousing, grabass and smut. Ok, sure, I'm not sure how much that's true, but whatever.

An expression you'll often here is 'herding cats'. You can get cats (or cattle, or whatever) to flow a certain direction if you gently convince them that's the way they wanted to go in the first place. If you try to be heavy handed or make big brutal changes in direction, not only will they not go, they'll jam up and resist, and inefficient chaos ensues.

The fundamental job of the Navy is warfighting. Not minimizing sexual harassment, etc etc. Enacting the US's political will, by force when needed. There is value in projecting a certain clean image for PR reasons, so you don't get entanglements that interfere with enacting that will (because your fire control team is in jail, for instance) and there's also some value in projecting a certain dirty image, because having people think you're untouchable motherfuckers can get you out of fights before they start, and that goes further than the liberty port cathouse. That latter bit tends to get forgotten.

The key here is that if the natural state of sailors is debauchery and you need them to be highly trained and hardened killers (or cooks, or enginemen or whatever) what you should be focusing on is how to nudge them with the least possible tangential force in that direction. Division/department training on their own equipment and procedures helps with that. SARP etc where you demonize them and their de facto lifestyle (often) does not, and every minute you spend on it is one you're not putting towards improving warfighting, or one of any other beneficial activities (including letting the motherfuckers get some shuteye.) You may not be able to maintain the social standards of a modern university, but you're not dealing with university-caliber kids in most cases anyway, and universities don't have to worry about DC efforts when people hurl missiles at them, how to handle boats full of unruly refugees, how to remain undetected when off the coast of Country Orange, etc.

In fact, focusing on telling your sailors they're pieces of poo poo for things you haven't convinced them are evil (like engine room grabass or putting dirty granny porn in someone's rack) is like throwing a wall in front of a pack of cats; they're not going to accept it and go shooting off in the direction you want, they're going to a) get frustrated at whoever's throwing this poo poo in their faces and b) redouble their efforts on getting around it. Neither of those help your cause, which should be warfighting.

Basically the standard should be, do what you need to do to keep someone from getting genuinely hurt (physically or mentally), but recognize your sailors aren't and can't be allowed to be delicate flowers, because they need to be able to cope with poo poo hitting the fan. And just because things happen down in the machinery spaces that aren't fit to show to small children doesn't mean it's a crisis.

You can get into the team-building and trust aspects of some of the 'hazing' in a job where you're often quite literally depending on people to do their job right, three levels away, possibly while you're sleeping, or you're going to loving die, but that's more controversial.

The guy also confuses the heckler's veto with democracy, and I'd argue really underestimates how much the Navy knee-jerks at a macro level, but that's beyond the scope.

"Herding cats" has more to do with the fact that cats don't listen for poo poo and will do whatever they want.

Bolded was the focus of one of my major problems with that piece. I was going to specifically mention the sleep thing. For me as an aviator, I lose the opportunity to tell my guys to knock off for the day because they busted their rear end on getting an engine change done expeditiously. Instead I have to send them to 2 hours of GMT. Its all about opportunity cost.

That's what I tell people what the standard should be almost to the letter.

Not only does he underestimate it, he is underestimating the impact that it has on the day to day life of sailors. The JO thing was meant somewhat tongue in cheek but its funny because its true. I'm sure he is an intelligent guy but JOs have a very myopic view of the Navy. In aviation JOs aren't expected to anything except be really good at tactics, NATOPS, and taking care of any sailors that work for them. They don't deal with big picture very often, if at all. He is basing things on "his experience" which is jack poo poo. I write this as a JO who used to do the same thing and I'd wager to guess I had a better idea of the larger picture when I was a JO because of some of the stuff I did with the squadron but looking back now I realize I still knew gently caress all about big Navy.

I still remember the japanese protest boats at basically every port we pulled in to. They would register with the coast guard and would stay in their restricted box. They wouldn't actually come close to the ship. They just sat back with their megaphones shouting "McCain go home!"

Sasebo doesn't seem like an exciting place, but there is a lot of cool things to do in and around the area, and Japan in general, if you're not the typical get drunk erry night sailor. My second ship was a broke-dick FFG so I spent about a month and a half there on a WESTPAC.

- Definitely buy some Chu-Hi's and jump on a train to Nagasaki and check out the Atomic Bomb museum and park. It's pretty moving and worth the time. Also don't be a dick there.

- There is a place just off base called Steak Salon. It's run by an adorable old couple and seats about 10 people total. You can tell he loves preparing his recipes, he does it very well, and you'll enjoy a great four/five course dinner. Don't leave Sasebo without trying this at least once.

- Try some Habu-Sake

- In the winter there is a lantern festival in Nagasaki - it's pretty cool.

Really, you just need to keep an ear to the ground, explore, and experience every festival and what not you can. Or you could just go to Sailor town and drink your time there away. You'll miss one more than the other though.
