George Orwell’s 1984 was right on target...
One of Orwell’s most important messages in 1984 is that language is of central importance to human thought because it structures and limits the ideas that individuals are capable of formulating and expressing. If control of language were centralized in a political agency, Orwell proposes, such an agency could possibly alter the very structure of language to make it impossible to even conceive of disobedient or rebellious thoughts, because there would be no words with which to think them. This idea manifests itself in the language of Newspeak, which the Party has introduced to replace English. The Party is constantly refining and perfecting Newspeak, with the ultimate goal that no one will be capable of conceptualizing anything that might question the Party’s absolute power. The ever vigilant eyes of Big Brother are the Thought Police. The principles of doublethink. The best explanation of doublethink are examples provided by slogans. These are: WAR IS PEACE; SLAVERY IS FREEDOM; and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.

So in your mind, and Copeland's phrasing, would the best Orwellian comparison be F*CKING N*GGER IS FREEDOM? Or does something catchy like IGNORANCE IS F*CKING N*GGER work better?

Otherwise, I'm not sure where Newspeak comes into the issue, since it is pretty clear what Copeland meant with the language that he used.

What baffles me is that the 10 commandments clearly forbid porn and yet you have these people there its not only okay but healthy and good for marriages.

How do they even reconcile these things?

Religion for most people in the US functions as a secret handshake. Everyone is expected to act pious in public, but then all that stuff gets tossed away very quickly when it comes to private life. According to men on Freep, the taboo a lot of modern society is breaking is not the act itself but the "flaunting" of the act. So, in reality, they're okay with it. They just believe you're supposed to lock it away in a box never to be talked about unless you're getting drunk with your 2-3 best bro's once a year.

This is why a lot of them say what they do about gay people and gay marriage. "I'm fine with gay people, but I just don't like them flaunting it!"

The same thing goes for drugs. Most people in the US admit to having tried pot, and a lot of older people too. They still think it should be illegal for "moral" reasons. They do not perceive themselves to be bad people for having participated in that activity in their youth, but "Dammmit! These young 'uns today! They wanna flaunt their bad behavior!"

A lot of it comes off as petty jealousy that young people get to grow up in a better world than they grew up in. They're very interested in making sure their children have just a lovely time as they did because "it builds character." A lot of them want the status quo for their kids, and this is especially the case if they were a part of the status quo that happened to be privileged in that prior generation.

Their sense of morality and legality is also very linked. They really believe we should legislate morality, and that magically the consequences of that should not apply to them. They think anything legally permitted is something that society is actively encouraging.

So when it comes to the birth control pill they say it's gonna make women into sluts because it's technology more feasible to have sex without getting pregnant. They think making marijuana legal is gonna cause everyone to toke up, watch Cheech and Chong movies all day, and never go to work. They think making gay marriage legal is going to cause their children to shack up with a sugar daddy down the street because "Hey! It's legal!" They think no-fault divorce will lead to everyone getting re-married every 4 years.

It's a really hosed up world view that's inherently based on self-loathing and a need for their morality to be dictated to them by the government. It also says a lot about their own motivations and what they believe the motivations of others to be. I can only conclude that some conservatives in my family would definitely have been out of the closet because their arguments against gay marriage boils down to "well if we condone this as a society then everyone will do it.. <because it's a superior lifestyle that will make everyone happy>" It makes me kind of :smith: when I think about it.

So I had to put the Christmas ham in the oven myself so everyone won't get sick.
Now the head of the household wants everyone in the living room to be in the living room while everyone opens their gifts..... stupid tradition.
I rather get the gifts and take them home and then open them... I hate opening them in front of everyone.

Fellow melanin-enriched conservative here. Pleased to meet you.

I saw your first report about this exchange with your father-in-law. Pardon if I don’t read through the follow-up tonight, but it’s late and I really only wanted to touch base and let you know that I feel yer pain :-)

I come from a huge family of west coast libs, of which I am the sole conservative/Tea Party/Patriot/Rebel. I’ve been near-persona non grata with the family since sometime during Clinton’s second term because of breaking ranks and escaping the Dem-lib mind control plantation.

It took a few years, but I eventually made peace with it all. A number of my kin also finally just accepted that I was never coming back to the left-wing fold. Others haven’t, but that no longer bothers me. They’re welcome to their viewpoints. I have mine, and nothing they ever do or say will change them.

Anyhow, I’ll stop back by your thread tomorrow and read more of it. I think it’s healthy that you’re having this debate with your father-in-law, but steel yourself for the possibility that you’ll never reach him. I stopped trying to talk sense into libs a long time ago, due to their immunity to fact, logic, and reason.

I would never carry my AR into a public place. Just too in your face for me. Illinois is new to concealed carry and some of us are trying very hard to establish a good reputation. Last weak I was visiting my folks at their assisted living and another couple joined us for lunch. The TV was on and there was something on about crime. The lady commented that she had heard that it was legal to carry a gun now and that scared her. I politely told her about the restrictions and such and that I was licensed to carry and sometimes did, altho I was not just then. I ended up with two converts. I would like to think that if someone brings the subject up with them that they will tell them that that polite young man who comes to see his parents all the time carries, so it must be OK. That is how I think it should be done.

If they don’t want the business of legal carriers, that is their business.

But it also tells potential criminals that Chipotle is an UNARMED VICTIMS ZONE. Look for armed robberies of these stores to rise.

(P.S.- A LARGE banner posted outside of a store saying something like, “ATTENTION CRIMINALS! This store does not allow Legal carry of weapons. It is safe for you to rob!”, would likely create one hell of a stir.)

If everyone who would open carry decides not to do so, then how would a business know what keeps the majority of their customers happy?

Do you really think that a majority contacted management and said they were not happy? Or was this the weak-kneed minority who are too squeamish to defend themselves and expect jack-booted thugs to do it for them?

Obviously, the majority of Americans do not support any further gun control. There is no other possible explanation for the recent failure in a Democrat Senate to pass gun control.

Yet the anti-gunners assure us that the Senate is failing to do the will of the people.

Here in Kalifornia we await clarification of the Peruta court decision which recognizes that Kalifornia's recent ban on open carry must mean that they prefer concealed as the only legal way to bear arms.

The problem is that one cannot conceal a rifle. And yet who in their right mind can claim that our Founders were only protecting the right of the people to bear handguns.

We have a long way to go but I think now that we may get there. It's not helpful to have our side failing to recognize the RIGHT to keep and bear arms. To discourage those who would open carry is to join those who don't like the right and who would "discourage" it at every turn.

College Wins US Debate Championship By Repeating the N-Word Over and Over.

OP Article posted:

On March 24, Towson University won the 2014 Cross Examination Debate Association’s national championship. Towson defeated the University of Oklahoma. What was Towson’s strategy? Inexplicably using the N-word over and over again in an incomprehensible tirade. ...
The Atlantic has a decent article on the whole thing, and yes it actually is real. What the OP doesn't tell you is that

The Atlantic posted:

On March 24, 2014 at the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) Championships at Indiana University, two Towson University students, Ameena Ruffin and Korey Johnson, became the first African-American women to win a national college debate tournament, for which the resolution asked whether the U.S. president’s war powers should be restricted. Rather than address the resolution straight on, Ruffin and Johnson, along with other teams of African-Americans, attacked its premise. The more pressing issue, they argued, is how the U.S. government is at war with poor black communities. ...
This year wasn't the first time this had happened. In the 2013 championship, two men from Emporia State University, Ryan Walsh and Elijah Smith, employed a similar style and became the first African-Americans to win two national debate tournaments. Many of their arguments, based on personal memoir and rap music, completely ignored the stated resolution, and instead asserted that the framework of collegiate debate has historically privileged straight, white, middle-class students.
Tournament participants from all backgrounds say they have found some of these debate strategies offensive. Even so, the new style has received mainstream acceptance, sympathy, and awards. ...

I am actually surprised that more black Americans aren’t falling for it, with the the way the Obamas’ have been so obvious and consistent at beating the drum of racial divide.

Many blacks are Christians, or have Christians in the family, which as the writer said, gives a person a leg-up to scan the place for the race baiters, power seekers and self promoters, who need chaos to impose martial law and basically end America as we were privileged to know it.

Of course, these black-on-white racial attacks — already a frequent but largely unreported phenomenon — will only worsen with racial hustlers such as the Obamas peddling their “series of agreed-upon myths,” to use Napoleon’s characterization of history.

Yes I preferred being stopped on the street to being knocked to the street. The latter frequent but largely unreported.

Yes as I am wont to point out endlessly the Obama-Holder Dept. of Just Us and Our People no longer releases inter-racial crime data post 2008. That is, I cannot find Table 42 data previously present in DoJ statistics prior to 2009. Those stats showed that the Victims Industry people are lying -- and those lies are the Obamas' “series of agreed-upon myths”.
