I looked into it and its really weird. Apparently, Anna Miller's had an almost Hooter's style appeal to people in Japan and was almost like a proto-maid cafe. But then most of the franchises collapsed in the 90s when the bubble economy burst and I guess the rise of maid cafes was the final nail in the coffin. Really strange as the Hawaiian location is just a family style diner restaurant without any overt sexual overtones.

Just goes to show you how sexy you can make something that's not native to your culture, like French maids and Pennsylvania Dutch food.

Fudou, Gunzou. The Face of the Franchise Killer. 2004.
Akane route, chapter 12: The last stand

1/1: New Year's Day

Goon: Hmmm, it's the start of a new year.

Goon: This is Kasumi-san's card.
Goon: It feels a little childish, but that's Kasumi-san for you.

Happy new year!
I hope this year turns out great for everyone.

Goon: This is Hikari's. It's hard to believe that high school's almost over.

Suddenly, there's so little time left in our high school lives.
Let's make sure we don't regret any of the memories we make.

Goon: This is Akane's. It's different from what I expected, but it's cute.

A Happy New Year
(very tiny English that I can't make out)
Happy new year!
Let's have another good year!

Goon: This is Akai-san's. It's very, um... it's very her.

Let's have a good year!

There are still no words.

Takumi and Jun's cards are also the same.

(ding dong)
Goon: Coming!
Goon: (Who is it?)
Goon: (OH GOD!)

Soubanchou: ...
Goon: Whoa whoa whoa, Soubanchou...
Goon: No, I mean, uh, brother...
Soubanchou: You're coming with me.
Goon: Y, yes sir!

Amusing etymology note: The rude/imperative way to say "Come with me" in Japanese is literally to say "Lend me your face." I find this hilarious.

Goon: (Wh, what's going to happen to me?)
Akane: Oh, you're here! Come on in!
Goon: Akane!

Akane: Sorry to pull you out of the house so early in the year.
Akane: My brother said he would bring you over, and wouldn't listen to me.
Soubanchou: ...
Goon: Don't, uh, don't worry about it.
Goon: (Does this mean he's accepted me?!)
Akane: Now that everyone's here, we can start eating our osechi!
Goon: (Wow! I get to start the year by eating Akane's cooking!)
Goon: Thanks for the meal!
Akane: Eat up!
Akane: Oh yeah, remember when we played house when we were kids?
Goon: Of course I do!

Yes, Akane, I remember it as though it were a sepia-toned flashback ago... wait didn't we already have this flashback?

Mechanically, it's because you are able to dodge the Soubanchou fight and still see this scene, though it's a bit different if you do so.

Akane: Hehe, you did remember.
Goon: Didn't we play until the sun went down?
Goon: Oh, can you pass me that kuri kinton, Akane?
Akane: Yes, dear.
Akane: Oh, wow, I can't believe I said that!

Soubanchou: Hey, rear end in a top hat!
Soubanchou: That kuri kinton was mine!
Goon: You may be my brother now, but I'm not about to hand this over!
Soubanchou: You want some, punk?!

Yep, it's another fight! This time, we're at the (surprisingly huge) Ichimonji house!

Hey, does anyone remember that Yu-Gi-Oh! episode where they have a duel at a Chinese restaurant, and everyone's so used to Epic Duels(tm) that they just keep eating without batting an eye?

Uh. I don't, either.

Soubanchou: I'm drawing the line here!
Soubanchou: I won't let you take this kuri kinton away from me, rear end in a top hat!

Projecting much, Kaoru?

Soubanchou: Do you even remember who invited you here?!

This fight is exactly the same as before, so there's nothing really worth mentioning here mechanics-wise.

Soubanchou: You're not happy with just Akane, you're stealing my kuri kinton too?!

Defeating Soubanchou earns you "The right to eat kuri kinton"
Akane: You did it!
Akane: Now, no more complaints out of you, Onii-chan!

"Akane: We won!"
"Goon: What are you doing here? You didn't even do anything!"
"Akane: An artist spent a couple days of his life modeling my haregi, we might as well use it!"

Goon: Yes! That kuri kinton is mine!
Goon: ...Huh?

Akane: Oh, sorry. The food's all gone.
Goon: Nooooooooo!

2/9: Praised for a perfect week

I've skipped most of these because it's just Akane saying the same two things on repeat, but this one's different. Why? Because, with all of the Banchou-fighting we've been doing, most of the characters like Goon more than normal, leading to this unexpected development after a week of kendo practice:

Goon: (This week went perfectly!)
Kasumi: Wow, I underestimated you.
Kasumi: You have a lot of different talents, don't you?
Goon: (Awesome!)

This explains why we got a New Year's card from Kasumi this run, and not in the previous run.

2/14: Valentine's day

Hikari: Gunma-kun.
Goon: Hey, Hikari.
Hikari: Here, take this. It's chocolate.
Goon: Thanks!
Goon: ...It's huge.
Goon: It looks like a lot of love was put into this.
Hikari: Uh, well...
Hikari: Gotta go!
Goon: (Huh? Hikari?)

Takumi: How's it going?
Takumi: With your Valentine's chocolate, I mean.
Goon: Not bad, I guess.
Takumi: Good for you. Me, I don't seem to be getting very many because I'm a senior.
Goon: Probably.
Takumi: I probably can't even donate any to you...
Girl: Takumi-senpai!
Takumi: Yeeeessss?
Girl: I made some chocolate for you, senpai!
Takumi: Tee hee, thanks!
Girl: Oh, Takumi-senpai, you're so cuuuute!
Goon: (...They're being played.)

Goon: (Hey, it's Jun.)
Goon: Yo, Jun!
Jun: Y, yo.
Goon: You look happy.
Goon: You must've gotten some chocolate from Akai-san.
Jun: Y, yeah...
Jun: She said she made it herself...
Goon: Whoa! Jun, she's so into you!
Jun: Into... me.
Goon: Jun?

Because Jun's twitching face is the most emotion we've seen from him this whole game, it deserves its own gif. Here you go:

Jun: YEEEEEESSSSSS!!
Goon: (He is such an innocent.)

Akane: Hey, uh...
Goon: Akane?
Akane: Hey, um, if you want, uh...
Akane: Would you like this?
Goon: Wow, that is one huge chocolate.
Akane: I worked really hard on it.
Akane: I thought, "what if this is my last chance?"
Goon: Last chance at what?
Akane: Oh, nothing. Nothing at all.
Akane: Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. Bye!
Goon: (Last chance at what?)

Homura: Gunma.
Goon: 'Sup, Akai-san?
Homura: Prepare to be amazed!
Homura: Here, take this. How do you like it?
Goon: W, wow. I am amazed. Is this chocolate cake?
Homura: Yeah, because if I gave you a regular old chocolate, it'd be boring.
Homura: Wanna split it with me later?
Goon: S, sure.
Goon: (That explains it. I was wondering why she gave me a #7.)

Kasumi: Hey, just who I was looking for.
Kasumi: You're on your way home right now, aren't you? Want to go home together?
Goon: Hey, Kasumi-san. Well...
Goon: Yeah, that's fine.
Kasumi: Good. I wanted to talk to you about something.

No, I don't know why Kasumi is wearing different clothes from last run. For comparison:

Kasumi: Oh yeah, I should give you one.
Kasumi: You want some chocolate too?
Goon: What? Kasumi-sensei, you're giving me some?
Kasumi: Yeah. It's giri chocolate, of course.
Kasumi: Open up the glove compartment.
Goon: Oh, okay.
Kasumi: You can have the chocolate in there.
Goon: Seriously? I can have it?
Kasumi: As much as you want. So, how was your haul this year?
Goon: N, not bad.
Kasumi: Oh? "Not bad"? I wonder if my giri chocolate is the first one you got today...
Goon: (You don't have to keep saying "giri" over and over.)

Goon: I got 4 chocolates this year. Well, not bad.

2/18: Exams? Don't need 'em!

Goon: All of the entrance exams are today.
Goon: I told Kasumi-sensei that I was gonna go to college, but what do I really want to do?
Option 1: Go take the college entrance exams
Option 2: Take the employment exams instead
Option 3: Become a kendo instructor and open my own dojo

Goon did not choose the sword. The sword chose Goon.

Goon: I'll become a kendo instructor and open my own dojo.
Goon: I should be able to make it with my talent and abilities. Time to work hard!

2/23: Bomb warning

Ha! You can't hurt me now, bombs!

3/1: Graduation day

Goon: I graduate today...
Goon: It's the last day I'll ever wear this uniform.

Goon: It's the last day I'll climb this hill as a high school student, isn't it.
Goon: (Soon, the graduation ceremony will start.)
Goon: (Hmm?)

Jun: Hey, someone shady is looking for you!
Goon: Huh?
Familiar voice: Oh, there you are.
Familiar voice: Hey, you.
Familiar voice: You're coming with me.
Goon: Part-Time Banchou?
Goon: Yeah, okay.
Jun: Are you gonna be alright?
Jun: I'll go with you, we'll--
Goon: It'll be fine, don't worry about it.
Goon: This is something I have to take care of myself...

Soubanchou: You bastards! What are you doing here?
Soubanchou: NOOOOOOO! AKANEEEE!
Soubanchou: I, I can't let this happen!
Muscle: Soubanchou!
Kogarashi: Please, you have to be strong!
Fireball: Think of what's best for her!
Soubanchou: You'll all pay for this, you bastards!
Soubanchou: Let go of me!
Fireball: We need to get him out of here, fast!
Kogarashi: Indeed... This way, Banchou.

Part-Time: This is all we can do for you.
Part-Time: The rest has to come from you, Sis.
Part-Time: You'll be fine. Good luck, Akane-chan

Goon: Akane.
Akane: We're going to be so busy with the graduation ceremony soon, and, uh...
Akane: Umm. I'm sorry to pull you away like this.
Goon: Don't worry about it.
Goon: What did you need to talk about?
Akane: I've been such a burden on you.
Akane: I'm sorry for these last three years.

Goon: Why are you apologizing?
Goon: Because of you, Akane, I had a lot of fun.
Goon: I should be the one thanking you.

Akane: I... I don't want to graduate.
Goon: Why not?
Akane: Well, you know I have a lot of problems at home...
Akane: And I have to work all the time, so I never had time to have fun like everyone else...
Akane: And you know how my brother is...
Akane: I... I...
Goon: ...Akane.
Akane: But you always invited me out, you never got annoyed at me, and you were always there for me.
Akane: Because of you, these three years have been so much fun.

Akane: I can't stand the thought that today is going to pull us apart!
Goon: Hey, even after we graduate, we can still see each other like we do now.

Akane: That's not what I mean!
Akane: Not because we go to the same school, or because we're classmates, or because we're friends...
Goon: That's not true, I--
Akane: Don't say it!
Akane: You don't have to, I know you're trying to be nice to me.
Akane: But please, hear me out.

Akane: I already gave up on it once. I thought that I couldn't do anything about it.
Akane: But it didn't work.
Akane: Because I realized that you were that boy--
Akane: The one I could never forget.
Akane: I've spent a lot of time thinking about this.
Akane: I couldn't sleep last night...
Akane: That's why I decided.
Akane:
Goon: Huh?!
Akane: I...

Akane: I love you!
Akane: I want to be with you forever!

Goon: Ah...
Goon: Akane, I--

Akane: What?
Goon: I love you too.

Akane: Really?
Akane: In spite of who I am?
Goon: Not in spite of who you are. Because of who you are.
Goon: I love how you're always so optimistic and cheerful no matter what, Akane.

Akane: Thank you.
Akane: I'm so happy right now!

Goon: Wow, the silent bell - it's ringing.
Goon: It looks like God is cheering the two of us on.
Akane: Yeah... I'm so happy.
Akane: Goon-kun.
Goon: ?
Akane: I love you!
(Bone-crunching noises)
Goon: (Gwagh!)

And that is how the curtain closed on my three years of high school.

When I look back, it feels like all I did was go to Kendo practice.

In any case, I'm glad that I managed to graduate.

I'm going to keep honing my skills at Kendo, and teach local children the way of the sword.

Oh yeah, Akane has started going to culinary school.

We're on different paths now, so we may have fewer opportunities to see each other.

But that just means we'll value our time together even more.

I'm still pretty scared of her brother, but I think I'll just keep beating him as usual until he can't complain anymore.

She's getting cuter by the day, so I'm a little worried, but we will always be able to walk our paths together.

Because, like the legend this school has passed down through the years, our love will last forever.

Two things. First: hurray! We now get to hear the real credits song, and not the guitar version used for secret characters! It's called Anata ni Aete, and is one of my favorites from Tokimemo.

Second, while most of the info is still the same from playthrough to playthrough, we have one thing we're looking for in the credits:

Takumi

He said "I'm gonna become a host!"
I mean, he has the looks for it, but is it really gonna be okay?

Takumi's still the same.

Kaedeko

I hear that she works at a publishing company now, and is working hard as a writer for a crafts magazine.

Takumi failed once again. Suck it, Takumi.

Jun

To make the best use of his talents, he went to a school with a great sports program, and seems to be working hard.

C'mon c'mon c'mon

Homura

She got a job at Akai Orchards, and she's working hard in her own powerful way.

YES! We did it, goons, Jun and Homura ended up together. Unfortunately, they don't provide too much detail on what happens to Homura and Jun after school, but I'm sure we can fill in the blanks ourselves.

Everyone else has the same epilogues as before, so I'm not going to bother with that for future runs.

THE END.

There will be a brief intermission while I put out "carbon situations" at Fanime, followed by a poll on what you guys want me to do next with this LP!

Well, I still think Mei would be pretty fun but I'd quite like see Hikari's route as well, not just because crushing her hopes every time is brutal but she's a lot more interesting than the last game's childhood friend.

Actually, those in this thread with a better understanding of Japanese culture, why is the childhood friend archetype so commom in Japanese media? It's not that common in the West so I'm curious if there's an obvious cultural reason.

What are you talking about? Girl next door is totally a western archetype as well. I imagine its popular for the same reason that its popular in the west. A down-to-earth girl that's practically your best friend and knows you better than anyone. Also generally a nice girl with a good heart that loves the protagonist for who he actually is rather than whatever persona he's trying to project.

From the Tokimemo 2 introduction post:

I posted:

Why are the Japanese so fixated on childhood friends, anyway?

It's not just the Japanese. What the Japanese call an osananajimi ("childhood friend") operates on many of the same levels as the "Girl Next Door" and "Girl Back Home" archetypes that have been a staple of fiction for centuries. It's an easy way to establish the kind of relationship between two characters that takes the entirety of When Harry Met Sally to build otherwise. Want to show that two characters have a strong familial/fraternal bond that hints at the potential for romance?

Step 1: Write the words "Remember that time when we...?"
Step 2: Make up something that the speaking character would remember X years later
Step 3: Profit!

On a less jaded level, the osananajimi archetype is a flexible tool that sings to different parts of the Japanese soul. In many cases, the osananajimi is the Sibling You Never Had But Is Okay To Marry, playing the role of a playmate and surrogate family member to legions of latchkey kids deprived of parental affection. Or, to the many Japanese who move from suburban and rural areas to work in the city, the osananajimi represents everything that is good back home, the Family and Tradition that have been left behind and replaced by the Office and the Corporate life. And in many teenage romances, the osananajimi is a desperately needed anchor/safety valve in the turbulence of adolescence, a person who knows who you were and accepts who you are becoming - and conveniently happens to be both pretty and very much in love with you. There are many more levels to it, but that's a topic for a completely different time (plus, The World God Only Knows has already done a ton of yelling about it).

I really like this route, especially the ending. I played a bunch of Girl's Side 1 after reading this LP and had a lot of fun, but often found that the endings felt kind of disconnected from the rest of the game (usually because they tried too hard to force the magical true love legend into it). Akane's ending just fit her perfectly and still worked in the magical bell. And of course, everything involving Soubancho was amazing.
I do hope we see more of Tokimeki 2 before continuing though. I'm really curious about why 3 is so terrible, but there are just so many really interesting characters in 2 that we've barely even seen.

A few details about the Akane route's characters, garnered from supplementary sources:

  • The inspiration for her character design is a stag beetle, "because it looks strong". You can see it in how her hair curves inward to frame her face.
  • Akane's profile lists her brother on both her Likes and Dislikes.
  • Her brother's name is Ichimonji Kaoru, and he's apparently the same age as Kasumi and Maeka, and went to Hibikino High with them.
  • In fact, all of the Banchou are alumni of Hibikino High, which is why they use club Limit Breaks.
  • Muscle Banchou was in the Sumo club, which no longer exists because it didn't have enough members to keep its status.
  • Akane's father is a martial artist, and he is currently on a warrior's journey to train. Their mother went with him to stay by his side.
  • Supposedly, their mom is even stronger than their dad is.
  • Akane came in 6th in the overall popularity poll, but 4th through 6th were hotly contested (and as I mentioned earlier in the thread, 1st through 5th got music videos in a later game.)
  • Akane has 3 ending variations, while most other characters have two (Miho/Maho don't count!): one for if you dodged the Soubanchou fight, one for beating him, and one for beating him and also having the childhood playground event.
  • Akane has problems with the kanji in her own name, and writes あかね in hiragana instead of working the whole thing out.

The dialogue in Akane's C ending ends this way:

quote:

Goon: By the way, that girl in the sunglasses called you Sis. What's that about?
Akane: Oh, don't worry about it.

The official character popularity poll rankings:
1) Hikari
2) Kaori
3) Kasumi
4) Homura
5) Mei
6) Akane
7) Baseball
8) Miyuki
9) Miho
10) Kotoko

Hikari won by a pretty big margin. There was a big gap between Kaori and Kasumi. 4-6 and 7-9 were really tightly packed together. And since so many people liked Hikari, Kotoko is a pretty dead last.

So who made the sandwiches?
Why is Kaori so popular? See seems like a rather boring character compared to the rest. I don't know anything about her, but she looks like the "damaged girl who we save with the power of true love" archetype. I guess that's a popular one or something?

Nice to see that Ryo and King finally tied the knot after all those years.

(I couldn't think of a love interest for Ryu, nor are there any female characters who are canonically stronger or consistently tiered higher than him)

This seem a bit too dark for Tokimeki Memorial. My guess is that she actually plays the quiet type who enjoys being with animals, at least according to the more common tropes I've seen in anime.

Kaori is a hard run, but I think it's her reveal of why she is the way she is that made people emphasize with her. She's so popular she got her own manga story because Fans didn't want the sad ending that happens when you ignore her to be so but also knew Tokimemo 2's OTP was Protag-Kun + Hikari.

Her main theme is trust, and that's all I'm gonna say without spoiling things.

But as an aside, I think I she'd be very much a Japanese vs American fandom split. I suspect she'd be offputting for Americans as it takes her a really long time to warm up to you and Americans are impatient.

I'm surprised Hikari scored so high. Nowadays the "canon" love interest would never be at the top (though still in a respectable position like the top 5). It doesn't hurt that from what we've seen of her, Hikari isn't exactly as boring as the usual childhood friend characters.

To be fair, Hikari gets the most unique events (I think) and is probably the easiest character ending to get. So most people probably get her ending the first time they play the game. Also helps that she's a pretty good character. Keep in mind that Shiori also dominated the top of the popularity polls for the first game and she was super uninteresting compared to nearly the entire rest of the cast of the first Tokimeki Memorial.

There are a few things at work here.

First, the kanji for "boku" tends not to be used in informal settings because it literally means "manservant" (僕)- the archaic use was paired with "kimi", (君) which now means "you" but previously meant "master" - which is also why Akane's Kimi is written キミ instead of in kanji.

That's one part of it. Another part is that using hiragana (as when Akane says "Goon-kun Goon-kun") implies a measure of childishness, since writing out everything in hiragana usually means that you're a kid who doesn't know the kanji - so the use of the hiragana ぼく has a lot of baggage to it too.

The katakana ボク form is the most neutral, so that often comes up.

The fact that this extra layer of meaning is possible is actually quite fascinating! Thanks.

Speaking of Hikari, vibratingsheep, when/if you decide to do her run would it be feasible to complete while meeting every other girl? I figure if the run is so easy anyway and we've seen bits and pieces of her story you may as well add some challenge.

(If there's enough unique content for just her run this isn't necessary of course- I just thought it might be interesting)

There is no problem that cannot be solved through sufficient application of lasers and friendship.
I have a question for the thread, what happens if you trigger the Part Time Bancho fight while dating her?

"Love interest with traumatic past who eventually learns how to love again" is a very very common character type in Tokimeki Memorial. Some of it's pretty light ("my special talent is the only thing people care about, nobody actually knows me") and some of it less so ("I'm just a burden on my loved ones and I don't feel alive so I do lots of risky poo poo to get attention").
