I can't understand how people can actually think the Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax for all the reasons Centripedal Horse mentioned and more. Normally, I don't get worked up over conspiracy theories, but that one pushes my buttons. It's absolutely ghoulish to attack and harass the parents of murdered children. It's hard for me to not lose my poo poo when some dumbass tries to convince me that it was a false flag operation orchestrated by the Illuminati to steal our guns.

And wow, Alex Jones's snake oil has some hilarious reviews.

quote:

He was turned on to Alex Jones because he wanted to know more about the creator of such an amazing product. He now gets angry a lot and yells at the "New World Order" (whatever that is) as he watches TV. You should see him sitting in his recliner with a turkey leg responding to Alex's rants with gorilla like incoherent grunts. They truly have their own language (Incidentally Alex should probably go down to a quarter dose). But when when the hubby puts on his work clothes... my...my...my. It seems like when I am in the kitchen he passes the window every 10 minutes with something over his shoulder: fence posts, bags of mulch or rocks (in the evenings it's me- wink wink).

As I have been saying, it is a form of political denial. Running around screaming '9/11 is an inside job' is a lizard brain way of convincing people not to cooperate with the Neoconservative agenda. Similarly people who love their guns will accept that 'Sandy Hook is an inside job' because it is a way of rejecting any attempt to implement gun control.

It's really easy to figure out. They just think everyone fell for it and all the officials are in on it. Whether they hauled the kids off and executed them or simply relocated them all over the world, somehow everyone was either involved or duped. The conspiracy nuts just think they're smart enough to see it

Sandy Hook conspiracy theorists are almost as low as you can go (holocaust deniers are the only thing lower). At least 9/11 truthers usually don't harass the families of that event's victims.

I was wondering why this mass shooting has conspiracies attached to it, while others don't. I think it's because the details of this shooting are so horrible that its conspiracy theorists have to deny it, since they know that admitting to themselves it happened as it really did would force them to change their beliefs, especially if they're already gun nuts.

It's because the popularity of conspiracy theorism is increasing at this time. Fewer people had access to the internet's echo chambers when Columbine happened.

I see what you guys mean. I guess I'm too well-adjusted to understand conspiracy moon bats.

chairface, there are actually people who think that Boston Marathon was staged with the help of "crisis actors". Last year, I worked with a couple who were convinced that the Boston Marathon bombing was a false flag operation designed to incite hatred against foreigners. When I asked them who they thought was behind it, they said they didn't know. And when I asked them why someone would go through that much trouble to promote xenophobia when they could just run propaganda, they also didn't have an answer. It's like they have actual backwards thinking, because for all of the mental gymnastics they go through to create supposed patterns and connections, they skimp on basic "Who" and "Why" questions.

There's an extremely vocal group of fangirls on tumblr who believe that the brothers were set up and that the whole thing was a hoax. It's like everything awful about fandom plus everything awful about conspiracy theorists all rolled into one awful mess. There was even fanfiction less than a week after the bombers were caught. Erotic fanfiction (no not slash thank god although I'm sure that exists now)

See also the issue brought up before in this thread: It provokes enormous anxiety, especially in already ill people, that the world is a place where horrible things can happen without a reasonable explanation. Therefore, creating a just, or at least explainable world, wherein great conspiracies explain away the randomness and tragedies in life, alleviates the fear.

For example, after Nero was assassinated there were a lot of people (especially in the eastern empire) who thought he escaped and was going to take over again with the assistance of the Persians, the Roman's hated enemy. This was a huge theory that actually had a large impact on early Christianity-- the book of Revelations was pretty much written in code that meant 'look out, Nero is coming back and he's going to slaughter us all'. Revelations was hardly the only work of that type in that era either, just the only one that managed to make it into the cannon of a modern religion.

A lot of historians explain that as 'well it's not like they had an effective way to spread news back then' but given that people still do that stuff today I suspect it's all due to the lizard-brain looking for patterns.

Well yeah but in the case of Columbine disinfo.com pretty much rose to fame because of Columbine conspiracies, and Salon had a writer who covered them pretty extensively. I remember reading about them on webpages at the time. Mid-1999 is not an era buried in the mists of history or anything.

I've never read any Zizek but if his posts are anything like SMG's I can see why he would make people hate things associated with him.

I understand the whole conspiracy theorist need to explain things away and assume they are all part of a plan; how somehow even a terrifying and monstrous plan is preferable to the knowledge that at any moment you can fall victim to terrorists, but what I don't understand is, well, is that really what's going on with a lot of these?

Like, how is 'you can, at any moment, be slain by false-flag operations by the US Government' any different in a practical sense from 'you can, at any moment, be slain by Islamic terrorists.'? The conspiracy is something still in-progress and still ineffable so how is it alleviating fear? Whether the conspiracy is being plotted by terrorists half a world away or by shadowy cabals within the government, what's it matter? In both cases it's a conspiracy that is for all intents and purposes so beyond your ability to influence or prevent that it's no different than random chance?

I mean, like, JFK, Sandy Hook and so on things are attaching conspiracies where there was none, and it was the actions of a lone man. But 9/11 and to a lesser extent the Boston Bombing WERE conspiracies! Just, you know, not by the US Government. How is it more comforting to assume your own government is out to get you, especially when your ability to defend yourself is the same in both cases.

What difference does it make whether the conspiracy meets in the White House or in some cave in Afghanistan?

Umberto Eco's ur-facism. The enemy is simultaneously all-powerful and incredibly fragile. It's easier to get that sense of control when the Evil Force seems "closer" to you, and the Pentagon is closer to most Americans than Saddam's bunker or Bin Ladin's safehouse.
