Start a new game, busily working away on developing my homeworld and setting up nearby mining bases in the pre-warp era. My leader has a negative to colony happiness, but that's alright since he has a bonus to population growth and that's what I really want. Then a civilian ship gets built so he gains the labor oriented trait. loving labor oriented trait, how I hate thee. So now he's got huge penalties to happiness and negligible benefit to growth, so I dismiss him. And so amidst all the Ackdarians on the planet, the one who steps forth and picks up the gauntlet of leadership? This fucker.

Questions: how does this game handle espionage and diplomacy? Specifically where on the scale of 1-10 does the AI stand in its diplomatic dealings with other partners (1 being Total War "declare on every neighbour that has a bit of power never mind their strength and 10 being ... Galciv 2? haven't seen many great ai) and is espionage more than steal tech/sabotage infrastructure? also can this game run without steam?

Another quick question, I saw it mentioned recently but now can't find it that there's an upper limit to how many mining components are effective on a ship or station. Is this correct and if so, what is the number? I always build fuckoff gigantic mining facilities and I'd hate to think I'm wasting resources.

With espionage you can steal maps (of varying degrees, from simple territory to everything explored to deep cover 'see what every one of their ships sees over a prolonged period'), steal tech, destroy bases, assassinate leaders, encourage change of government, and encourage particular colonies to rebel. As far as diplomacy goes the AI is somewhat clever. A race might see you as a threat due to your massive power and your encroachment on their borders but they'll still sign a free trade agreement with you because you're still their biggest trade partner. And if they don't want your trade they might just impose sanctions and blockade some of your far flung mining stations rather than going straight to war. edit Mister Adequate posted:Another quick question, I saw it mentioned recently but now can't find it that there's an upper limit to how many mining components are effective on a ship or station. Okay, Here is the deal. I started playing today and this game runs totally shithouse. SSD, i7 920, 8gb of ram, 770GTX. an hour in and I am chugging on a 700 star, 10x10. There is no loving reason it should run this way. I emailed them about this last year and they told me they couldn't find any problems, I even uploaded my save. I wait till this, spend 10 more dollars (after the 100 I spent) and I still get problems. I think this means I am an idiot.

Reason posted:I can't get this game to run through Steam at all. What am I doing wrong? They have have this huge laundry list of things you can do to get the game running. lemme paste it: Hi everyone, This is for the post-release period. In general, we find DW to be stable and trouble-free on the vast majority of systems. However, if you run into issues these are the first steps to follow. If you are experiencing issues running Distant Worlds Universe, please follow the steps below. After each step, please run the game and check if the issue persists. Should you try each of these and you still have issues, please contact us at Support@slitherine.co.uk, or open a thread in the official Distant Worlds forum at http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tt.asp?forumid=792 1. Please update your video and sound drivers. 2. Please ensure that you have Windows Media Player installed and enabled. You can check these at: Control Panel > Programs and Features > Windows Features > Media Features > Windows Media Player 3. Please ensure that you have Internet Explorer installed and enabled. You can check these at: Control Panel > Programs and Features > Windows Features > Internet Explorer 11 4. Please also check that Windows Management Instrumentation Service is running. To check this open: Control Panel >Administrative Tools > Services. In the list of services you should look for one named "Windows Management Instrumentation". The status column should say "Started". If this is present in the list but not started, please click the "Start" link to the left of the services list. If the game still will not start and you receive the same error, then you may have a broken installation of WMI. You can use the tool at this link to fix it: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm If "Windows Management Instrumentation" does not exist in the services list then you will need to enable it in Windows. 5. Please ensure that no game files have been quarantined by your Internet Security package software (Anti-Virus). 6. Please run DirectX 9.0c. This can be found in: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Distant Worlds Universe\redist\DxSetup.exe 7. Please run XNA Framework 4.0. This can be found in: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Distant Worlds Universe\redist\xnafx40_redist.msi (Steps 8-11 are also described in this guide: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/03/07/8108332.aspx). 8. Go to the Control Panel then Programs and Features and attempt to repair .NET Framework 4.0. 9. If a repair does not help, then try to download and run the .NET Framework Repair Tool to see if it can find and fix any issues with the .NET Framework on your computer. You can download the tool from the below link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135 10. If the repair tool does not help, then go to the Add/Remove Programs control panel and attempt to uninstall .NET Framework 4.0. Then reinstall .NET Framework 4.0 from the link below: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17718 11. If uninstall still fails from Add/Remove Programs, download the .NET Framework cleanup tool and choose to remove .NET Framework 4.0. Then reinstall again .NET Framework 4.0 (using the file downloaded in the previous step). The cleanup tool can be found at the below link: http://blogs.msdn.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer-Components-PostAttachments/00-08-90-44-93/dotnetfx_5F00_cleanup_5F00_tool.zip 12. Please run msconfig and disable all background programs and then run the game. If the issue is resolved, then you can re-enable each program until you find the interfering program. You can see a tutorial of how to use msconfig below: https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/shutting-down-background-applications 13. Install and run the game with your Internet Security package software (Anti-Virus) temporarily disabled. 14. Please check that you have Microsoft User Account Control disabled, then reinstall and run the game. A tutorial on how to do this can be found below: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-user-account-control-uac-the-easy-way-on-windows-vista/ ----- If you are running Windows XP and your Distant Worlds is crashing please follow these steps to troubleshoot and remedy the problem. So does this game have tons of randomly complex systems in a giant stew of bloated 4xness with cracks in the gameplay that allow really cheesy busted tactics to win, or is this is a legitimately interesting and challenging game?

Something I never really tried, but if you put lasers on civilian ships/mining stations will they defend themselves?
|

Mining stations, yes. They're unrestricted in what they can mount.(Reminder, make damm sure they get Missiles-it sucks to not hit something due to range). Civilians like cargo ships, not so much. They're only allowed one weapon, can't have fighter bays, and their tactics are hard-locked to evade(Somehow they're not restricted on Assault Pods, though). It used to be unrestricted, then people realised the best defence was reconfigured civilian ships. It also caused diplomatic problems because such things counted as military ships to the AI. So it was changed. Point to note, there's nothing stopping a military ship from equipping mining stuff. There's been a few things like that over the game's history. Not many, but some. It's also why there's a size restriction on bases 'not at a colony'. I recall you used to get people making super-bases of sorts with ridiculous size. victrix posted:So does this game have tons of randomly complex systems in a giant stew of bloated 4xness with cracks in the gameplay that allow really cheesy busted tactics to win, or is this is a legitimately interesting and challenging game? The games systems are complexish, but with a goal in mind; as far as I've played, I haven't seen something that is really crazy overpowered. There's the standards of 4x, where research speed is king and everything snowballs, but at least the espionage can make up for it if you fall behind. EDIT: No wait, not sure if they fixed this, but in one of the older versions I had one really badass spy who stole from the Ancients (which are basically a super advanced but derelict/nearly extinct machine race that is there for story purposes) repeatedly, so that might be considered a broken tactic. The nice thing about the game is that the challenge will stay throughout the game, even if its a bit uneven at times; i.e. you might wander into a bunch of free colonies in the form of independent races that like you, or you might come across the gigantic hive of bug races that found the Temple of Darkness and follow a religion meant to annihilate all other races and they kick your rear end. Late game has some story related suprises (very late game), and there's always the chance your empire will get unhappy and explode into several offshoots following civil war iirc.

Is there an option somewhere to turn off "all newly built ships start out automated"? How does everyone deal with newly built ships just flying off to suicide themselves - for example, if you have a world set to be colonized via the AI popup, lots of newly-built ships will be funneled there as soon as they are built with the "wait at X" order; if there are a bunch of pirates orbiting that planet then it's basically just ships flying into the grinder for no reason and a complete waste of money, so you have to either cancel the colonization or babysit the place(s) that are producing ships. Please tell me I'm overlooking something here.

Go after planets/moons/asteroids that have resource %'s over ~60% unless you are hurting for that particular resource. For the most part you can let the AI take care of building mining stations for you, though make sure you grab a source of Caslon (your primary fuel source for your early engines) ASAP. When you start building out into other solar systems it would do you a whole lot of good to manually order a mining ship to build a Gas Mining station at a planet with some Caslon. That way your civilian ships have a refueling station within the system and they can better auto-acquire resources for you.
