I legit got uncomfortable when I visited Portland and there were only white people around 99 percent of the time it comes from this. portland is like the blandest town. it has absolutely no personality. it is exactly what you would expect when a town is all boring white yuppies like I picked on Detroit earlier but the city has a shitload of personality despite all of its problems. Portland has nothing

my choices were dallas or portland, SF made me really uncomfortable in terms of the culture of the job market i'd be participating in (worthless tech bullshit, oceans of php devs and "entrepreneurial spirit" or lovely meat grindy game jobs), despite growing up in the area (sonoma/marin/napa, also bland whiteyville, probably the worst). gonna miss the north bay underground rave scene though i'll live in a "real" city someday, i really liked the feel of chicago when i visited edit* if my job path in life ever leads me to find myself walking around a convention with a hadoop hat and a mongodb shirt you have full permission to execute me on sight

if you think you like any city in the north, go in winter and stay two weeks. if you still like it, move there i haven't been to chicago but i had a job interview a couple of hours away in feb and it was loving brutal

It's just not the sort of city to idolize or hold up as truly great, even Seattle is better on the whole.

hey assholes levar burton continues to own http://thinkprogress.org/culture/20...-would-love-to/quote:So number one, Reading Rainbow was not cancelled because it was not effective. Reading Rainbow was the most used television resource in our nation’s classroom. In 2009, it was [cancelled] due to No Child Left Behind. That government policy made a choice between teaching the rudiments of reading and fostering a love of reading. So the idea that I am trying to somehow revive a failed endeavor is bullshit. That’s right. I said it. Bullshit.

The big Newspaper Comment Meme here right now is "Abolish property taxes, you never actually own your home because you have to rent it from the government!" Boy do they get mad when you suggest that they have to have "skin in the game" in their community and they get even angrier if you suggest that if they can't afford the property taxes they can't afford the house and they should live within their means.
