Even then it was probably only a huge story because the government was only in by a tiny margin so if they lost a minister it was a big deal. The focus even in the segments of the media that were really out to get him was on the fraud, no one really cared about the sex part.

I read up a bit on this (Craig Thomson, right?) and it looks like his wife stood by him, but would she have had grounds for a divorce? I'm seriously asking, I'm not familiar with Australia's standards for divorce grounds.

I guess to put it another way, there are different things that happen when you file for divorce because "the magic is gone" and when you file for divorce because "my spouse slept with somebody else (prostitute or otherwise)." For example, there are usually conditions and delays to the first (no-fault divorce), such as having to be separated for 1 year (generally needing to prove that you're no longer living as a couple for that time), while the latter can be processed relatively quickly and carries some financial advantages, as well as arguing for things like child custody. At least in the U.S., I'm not finding anything specific to prostitution or anything that happened before the couple got together; a past criminal conviction can be used but has to include prison time, although it's possible to get a divorce for religious reasons and I think in most places having proof that your soon-to-be-ex slept with a prostitute in the past will always help your case and hurt theirs, at least if you're trying for a fault divorce.

Yeah, we don't have fault based divorce anymore. I believe the whole idea of abrogating it is to remove the idea that a party is at fault and can be punished in the settlement for it.

That you know that your money does not entitle you to whatever you want, and that there is likely going to be someone with a gun and a bunch of muscles in the next room waiting to take whatever actions necessary to pull you off a girl when you do something she doesn't like or otherwise freak her the gently caress out and make her ask you to leave.

You think that by legalizing it you will get the best girls at low prices because you know the demand is very inelastic and that the supply would explode like in NZ which has legalized brothels.

You forget that if it were legalized here that it wouldn't be done for you, it would be done for the sex worker. Done to protect them, to not marginalize them. That the lesson of NZ is that when you let sex workers be organized they become incredibly exploitable just like minimum wage populations in the US are currently. Conservatives will never legalize it in any way, period. They are the ones who WOULD put forth the unregulated cheap sex wonderland of STDs you dream about. Progressives are the ones who would ever actually try to do anything about this and like other first world countries it would inevitably be drafted to decriminalize sex work while keeping Johns and organized forms like brothels and pimps with stables illegal. It would use things like tax law to enforce this and instead of raids with guns you'd have IRS agents and courts after you, which are objectively scarier from a stable business point of view.

The net effect would be that those who engage in sex work could do so without fear of governmental retribution while being able to record you having sex with them so that at any time if you cross a line they can turn footage of you paying for sex over to authorities and you get arrested. It would empower sex workers by allowing them to engage in explicit contracts which you have to agree to to spend any time with them which will result in your criminal prosecution if you do something they do not like.

And you would still never get laid because you are such a repellant person that you would never risk it, knowing that at best you are likely to pay and not get laid, and at worst you are likely to end up prosecuted because your entitlement complex would result in you pissing off a girl who does not need your business and she'd turn over the videos of you explicitly agreeing to sex for money to the police and they'd prosecute you for it, since she did nothing illegal and you did.

That's how it would work, and you're a fool if you think otherwise, because no one but you gives a poo poo about your plight and that is exactly how the world should work. You want legislation to reflect your entitlement complex. It never will. Move to New Zealand and get shot for being a douchebag with a sex worker or shut the hell up and improve yourself here. You will never have a third option.

P.S. No, I've never seen a prostitute or paid for sex. I did briefly have a fling with a girl who answered phones, set appointments, and ran background checks though. I picked her up at work and met some of the girls and the guys who ran bodyguard duty though and had an in depth conversation about this kinda stuff while waiting for the girl I was seeing to get off work. Also, there was an A/T thread with several sex workers including two from NZ asking questions.

I think what I said was that society thumps the scale in favor of older women by prohibiting prostitution and keeping teenaged females out of bounds. Or some such. It's been a while.
