Well no, GTA V has parity across platforms because both have been out for 8 years and Rockstar have made a number of games over that time so know how to use both platforms properly. The PS3 at the start was hampered by the cell being obtuse, but that wasn't the driving force for optimisation. The techniques used to get something like, well lets stick with GTA V, running on 360/PS3 are not fairly platform agnostic; I can guarantee that the PC release will not be able to run on anything near as low spec as the 360. The techniques used to shove GTA V into a 512mb RAM machine, or get it running on a 7800 chipset GPU are not universal. They are very specific to the platforms and are only available due to the closed nature of those platforms. Again; optimisations on consoles are not because of people struggling with them, its due to having a single set of hardware and being able to write code specifically for that hardware in the most efficient way. GTA V is not better looking than Perfect Dark Zero, or hell even GTA IV, because of art direction and generic techniques: its 3 times larger than GTA IV, it has graphics that are a major step up from IV, and at the same time runs better than IV. Those are platform specific optimisations for the 360/PS3 hardware, not platform agnostic in any way. Consoles being generic computers (lol what?) has nothing to do with it; the xbox 1 was literally a computer, it used an off the shelf pentium 3 cpu, had 64mb of ram and a modified geforce 3 chipset GPU. It even runs a modified NT kernel with DX8. Yet somehow Doom 3 came out on it, despite the PC version having a minimum spec of a CPU with twice the power, 5 times the amount of RAM, and a GPU that wasn't up to spec due to a lack of VRAM as well as no DX9 support. Despite all of this it was mainly intact, it lost a bit of texture quality and has more loading screens due to severe memory constraints but handles the lighting, bump mapping etc. On literal PC components that were way too weak to run the game. That is what you call optimisation for a specific hardware platform and it has absolutely nothing to do with the difficulty or abnormality of the platform, just that it is a single unchanging spec you can optimise for.

The CPU in the 360 was ok at launch. It had 3 cores and a high clock speed, but that was to make up for the fact it wasn't a particularly strong chipset. The cell (which I don't know why you think is a lesser extent) was really more powerful than the 360 CPU, it just was an utter pain in the rear end to develop for. However you can see it in stuff like TLOU where it pushes out visuals better than are available on the 360 while having a weaker GPU chipset, or how it can run GTA V etc at the same graphical quality. Thats why it was a pain, you had to be offloading all sorts of poo poo onto the cell cpu and it wasn't something people were used to. And again, they weren't hot poo poo at all at launch. There were already the AMD x2s out which were pretty strong at that point, then like a year later the core 2 duos and quads started coming out which were easily out of the performance range of the PPC in the 360.

The RAM was a huge handicap in the old consoles, its been upgraded quite a lot for the ps4. It only has 4.5gb to access so far due to reservations (the PS3 OS has issues because they expanded it without allowing enough resources to be reserved for it in the first place), but it is GDDR5 and has some nice implementations (as mentioned above, the GPU can skip past its L1/L2 caches and directly access the memory to improve latency between the GPU and CPU) never mind that its faster than what is in any desktop machine right now. They picked their RAM, GPU and CPU allocations based on developer feedback, and were asked for a unified speedy pool of memory and a beefier GPU as the previous gen had more than enough CPU grunt for what they needed, just not the graphical backbone or the memory. Also when you talk about overheads, its a bit different than direct comparison. The consoles have a reserved amount of resources as well as (on the PS4) smaller co-processors and memory to offload OS operations. Other than that though there aren't really "overheads" like you would be talking about on a PC. You don't have the same driver calls etc, the APIs that are used are more direct and you have the option of coding to the metal in a way that is utterly impossible on the PC due to the lack of unified hardware specifications.

A quick actual question about the Wii U, can the "Pro" controller be used for most games? Or is it just for select games and virtual console stuff?

Bayonetta 2 is actually "thing" that is happening so welp, I'm going to need to buy a Wii U. But the thought of using the tablet controller or nunchuck for an action game seems so counterintuitive.

the gamepad actually feels fine to play with most of the time but is not required for most games (maybe pikmin 3 but wiimote + nunchuck works with that as well). pro controller is great

It's on a per-game basis but most games support the pro controller so you can pick whatever.

They patched in touchscreen support so you can play pikmin 3 like the pikmin game in nintendoland, it feels so natural I didn't realize it was a later addition

Awesome thanks for the answers. Yeah I looked and B2 will support either, but it's good to know that most games support the pro. Nunchucks are great in the right games, but sometimes it feels shoehorned.
