I'm rooting for Germany, Japan, and USA. I was born in USA but currently live in Japan. My dad is German and my mom is Japanese, so I've been watching the world cup as long as I can remember. I also played soccer, because every German parent secretly harbors dreams that their children will represent the Mannschaft (I failed him miserably). Despite all this, I consider myself still a newbie when it comes to soccer. I just never understood the mechanics and couldn't remember player names for the life of me. And yet the world cup gets me excited every time it comes around, even with all the horrible poo poo surrounding FIFA. Destroy FIFA, keep the Fußball. I like supporting the USA and Japan, but I go in knowing that disappointment is the name of the game with these two teams. I eagerly await the next time Germany will win again, getting in the semis two cups running at least makes me feel good about their consistency. Italy are my mortal enemies since 2006. They knocked out my beloved Germans and hurt Zidane's feelings. I enjoy it every time they crash out. Schadenfreude, indeed. Or just straight sadism.

I support the US because that's where I was born and lived for most of my life. I am also supporting England because that's where my mom and all of my extended family is from. When both of those teams lose in the group stages I'll probably support the Netherlands because that's where I live, but honestly I might just root against them so I can make fun of my friends and coworkers.

Someone that is serving overseas in Germany and has a child gives that child Dual Citizenship until their 24th Birthday when they must choose one or the other. So, it's very possible and reasonable to like both if you are in that type of environment. These people have an [siren]official[/siren] German passport and an International one. They then report the birth to the Counslar and get the US to recognize them as a US Citizen. It's actually pretty cool, and I wish I was a Dual Citizen cause I would have gone to Germany a long time ago. Edit: forgot to mention, this is still true even if the couple are both American.
