I wouldn't be surprised if it's new marketing people. The approach is completely different, which has been targeting males 18-34 aggressively, courting Adult Swim animation houses to produce skits, courting Mega64, going on Conan, advertising during the NBA Finals. Their old marketing was strictly about advertising to kids 6-11.

It also really worked out for Nintendo that they had an entire day of events to themselves. The companies that had their pressers crammed together on Monday don't seem to have been as successful at recapturing attention (aside from some Ubisoft getting some fairly negative press). That said, Nintendo's release schedule for the rest of 2014 is looking lighter than 2013's.

There's been a bunch of women in all the treehouse streams as well, it's nice to see in a pretty male dominated industry. Did Nintendo just loving purge their marketing staff or something because this has all owned, especially that MK8 Direct

As for the marketing staff, it was more neutered than purged. I'm happy to see Nintendo giving more autonomy to NoA rather thus using a one size fits all marketing approach. It might have been Iwata electing making himself CEO of NoA to make the necessary changes.

I think that fixing the role women play in this industry definitely has to start by including them from within. Splatoon is slated for 2015 I'm pretty sure. I imagine there's a lot more content to work on than we saw, like having lots of arenas.

I guess they just feel like Pokemon and Smash Bros will keep selling into the holidays. I know how much you dislike it when Nintendo pulls a 'You can buy it right now/in a month or two realistically' thing for some of their games but I really think they could announce Majora's Mask in a dog day Summer Direct or like, even in September and have it show up in stores by December. It also helps that they've basically been teasing Majora's Mask 3D in official material for almost an entire year now, it feels like we've already been aware of it's existence for a long time even without any sort of announcement.

It feels like the Ruby Saphire re-makes. The whole "gen 3 confirmed" meme was the best marketing they could hope for, rather than sitting back and throwing it out there as soon as possible like Square. I wouldn't be that surprised if they're saving this, since they have announced a gently caress ton of stuff this E3. Much like with the Captain Toad game, nintendo is actually listning to what people want, they know the demand for MM3D, they're just saving it for the "right time"

And recently but not this year, Pushmo, Dillon's Rolling Western, Sakura Samurai. It looks like Nintendo is considering Fantasy Life one of their new properties as well, even though it's a co-production with Level5, so there's that too.

I think they went so heavy on the Wii U because the 3DS is doing fine (comparatively), so they threw all their effort behind the struggling one to help slow the bleeding it's causing. They might make it stop losing money, but I wouldn't put very good odds on it.

I don't know the specifics of what constitutes a new IP, but I don't really consider Captain Toad a new IP because it's a spinoff from the Mario series. To me a new IP is unrelated to what came before it.
