No, that's just the Ray Parlour's effect on people. Seriously, it's... not very well behaved over there. Especially around World Cup season.

Four years ago England (huge fanbase) and USA (huge fanbase) met in the World Cup and the mods had a meltdown because there was no chance in hell of maintaining control over the forum with THAT looming.

Yeah, it's a pretty toxic atmosphere.

I should probably stay away from it.

And to be clear, I do not endorse killing a referee's family, no matter how many times they screw up. I stand by my support for instituting instant replay for penalty calls and adding refs, though.

There's a pretty good chance they will get out of the group, and if they get out of the group, they will be going up against the dross in group C.

Yup. There's not much crazy bullshit happening in your average baseball game, but the real reason is frequency. MLB has 2430 games a year, not counting spring training and postseason play. The MLB also has several feeder leagues that also play a comparable number of games. I'm not looking up numbers because gently caress that, but there could easily be tens of thousands of televised baseball games a year.

Hah, I remember two things about the last World Cup.

1. The first time I turned it on, I'd never really watched soccer before but I decided 'hey why not', it was early morning and nothing was on. My first thought was 'is the stadium overwhelmed by bees?' :stare:

2. Playing a trick on my dad saying that there was a virus going around causing all internet browsers to just buzz vuvuzelas at you, when in reality I'd used one of those sites that overlayed a vuvuzela guy in the corner and BRBRZZZZZTTTTed at you.

Then I researched because I knew nothing about anything with soccer, learned about promotion, relegation, continental structures, etc., and the deal was pretty much sealed the next year when I watched the Womens' World Cup, saw Football Manager, read about how easy it was to customize (my go-to strategy for sports games where I have no loyalty is to create my own team, which is super easy in FM), and pounced.

EDIT: If you want to see an example of 'bad reffing' that probably isn't corruption, Mexico has had 2 goals that should have stood disallowed to keep the game 0-0 against Cameroon.

Never blame corruption for what can be explained as pure incompetence. Both are very frequent in soccer, but reffing is usually just bad instead of having evil intentions in mind.

Usually I would agree with this, but nobody could afford for Brazil to lose that game given the current riots situation. It was quite obvious.

As a Brazilian, let me assure you that the rioters would riot regardless of the result - it's a crowd that isn't so much concerned with the results than it is with the World Cup happening at all. There's this weird detachment here between the World Cup-Event and the World Cup-Big-Football-Thing, actually, and most protests are about the former, not the latter. In fact, most people that care about the World Cup games think the protesters are basically spoiled college kids making a mess for the sake of making a mess. Not that having a bunch of angry drunk fans would've done us much good, mind you, but it'd be a different problem.

Yeah, I don't actually think the ref in the Brazil game was bribed. I just think he was awful. It's easy to make the accusation, though, considering how much corruption there is in FIFA.

And today's early game also had horrible calls, Mexico should have won 3-0.

Did anyone else think that penalty kick was a bit silly? I'm at a a Dutch bar (well, an Irish bar overrun by orange) but I'm not sure I disagree with the mood here that Spain didn't earn it's goal, though it's been nicely back and forth

You say that but go back and watch some of the stuff from when Korea hosted the World Cup. Any time Korea were playing, the refs were utterly blind to any foul committed by Korea and would constantly book/send off/disallow goals for whoever they were playing

At this point in the game we were completely trashed already. The third goal (which was ilegal, they charged Casillas in the small area) really crushed Spain's spirit.

That said, it was a completely deserved victory. I've never seen Robben run like that, even when he was 15 years younger.

I actually went and looked up how old Robben was now because I assumed the age I had him at was wrong. Nope, he just had an incredible game. I'm hopeful for Casillas, though. That double save near the end of the game showed he hadn't lost his spirit entirely, and it would've been so easy for him to throw in the towel at that point. Our commentators here were all expecting de Gea to be lining up for your next game at least, though.
