Real Madrid has dragged both Iberian teams down. Spain, however, will move on from the group stage unlike England or Portugal.

Xavi is "retiring" by going to play in Qatar. I think Spain are playing clean now and we are seeing their real level. Which is bad. They will have all their wins stripped when this tainted era gets revealed in full. We are in the siege of Byzantium moment now.

Is the hate Spain thing because they've won the last three big tournaments or is it because the way they play the beautiful game? Was it OK to like Spain before they won everything, when they were to (lovable?) losers. Also is there any substance to the rumors of them all being doped up or is it just bitter talk.

When Fuentes got raided 100 or so bags of blood were siezed that the Spanish government have refused to be released for testing almost certainly because it'll show a whole load of Spanish athletes were doping http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2013/apr/30/doping-doctor-eufemiano-fuentes-sentence-shock

For the supposed 'best team in the world' they played dire, attritional boring football, combined with over the top histrionics. There's also proof they were on a poo poo ton of PED's locked in a court battle as the Spanish government tries to get the evidence destroyed while WADA want to get their hands on it and basically wipe any spanish athletes victories for the last 8-10 years.

It started about a year before the world cup in 2010. Barcelona (who i mention because del bosque just does whatever they do) under Frank Rijkaard and Spain were playing incredibly exciting direct football. There was passing and traingles galore but it always involved trying to get the ball through the defense to score. Pep takes over barca and they seemingly get even better. There is more passing and possesion but still plenty of attacking with eto, Messi, and henry combining for 100 goals. Then pep's style creeps in further and rather than the brilliant football for what is overwhelmingly the worlds most talented squad we get an ultradefensive pile of shite that somehow gets excused because they have loads of possession. A team with Xavi, Alonso, Villa, Torres (while he was still good), iniesta etc start passing the ball back to the keeper rather then try and score a goal and spend the entirety of the world cup grinding out 1-0 wins. It's an appalling waste of talent and is basically another form of mourinho's 'anti-football'. You can see the pattern at bayern now. A superb counter attacking team gets even better once pep injects a bit more passing and possession but is now slowly regressing to kicking it aimlessly to each other instead of trying to score. In terms of the doping there was a huge bust called Operation Puerto. Only the names of cyclists have been released despite the doctor involved saying he was so busy with la liga he had to turn down a serie A team and cyclists stating they saw footballers and tennis players at the clinic. The spanish courts have constantly tried to suppress anything else getting out most recently this involved a judge ordering the destruction of the blood bags found at Dr Fuentes's office. Spain is this decades East Germany. Loving Africa Chaps fucked around with this message at 09:56 on Jun 18, 2014 |

Spain will be a national embarrassment and almost all of sports results for the last 10 years will be severely shaken up. At this point the Spanish government know WADA will get their hands on the samples, so they're trying to stall for as much time as they can in the hopes that the samples degrade enough to be in admissible.

I admit that I cheered for the Spanish side during 2010, because it was nice to have Spain finally win it, but I agree that the way Spain and FCB has been playing the past few years have been really frustrating to watch. The endless pass-pass-pass-pass poo poo looking for the defense to breakdown is really awful. Watching FCB games the past years have made me hate them more and more. Would it be so bad to take a shot once in a while instead of passing the ball into the goal? edit: I wonder if Spain would lose their titles if it came to light that some of their players were on PED's. Is there a modern precedent on such a thing. At least it would cast a nasty shadow on it if nothing else and they would go down in history as not being able to win it without cheating. There is also the fact that despite having easily the best team in the world at the time, one of the tactics used by Barca was to go to ground under any challenge to win a free kick and get possession back instead of being tackled. Leading to Dani Alves being stretchered off to waste time and jumping off the stretcher and running back on as soon as he'd got off the pitch

Players are tested at random (many of them asked to give samples directly after a game), and if you miss one you get hosed. Rio Ferdinand got merked because he decided to move house instead of piss in a jar, and even though he pissed in the jar and passed clean the next day he still got a lengthy ban. Also lets not forget Adrian Mutu, who did cocaine and got caught, and has now been ordered to personally compensate Chelsea for the entirety of his transfer fee, something in the region of £16mil.

Nah all soccer testing is a loving joke, they don't blood test (only now are starting to I think) and its only in competition testing. If testing was good, players would look like they did in the 80's again.
