Sheep, you've got SCREENSHOT HERE in a few places. The outfit mechanic is totally awful. In the game itself is there any indication on how the girls will take your outfit or is it pure trial and error? Can you ever tell the girls off for how ugly their outfit is? Because that wouldn't end well for you, but it only seems fair for revenge or to bomb on purpose.

I do intend to carry out the threat I made in the stream chat and buy Dragon Force, but I've never needed a Japanese PSN account for anything before, and my initial attempt to make one was stymied by the Kafkaesque insanity of Japanese postal addresses. I'll get around to it eventually; it's just a bit inconvenient.

Ugh, the getting to know the girl phase in this game is so painful. It seems like it's 10x worse because we're doing Serika's route, seeing as she's hard to find, and only likes what she likes and hates everything else. I'm glad that you have a guide, Sheep.vibratingsheep posted:

I'm beginning to wonder whether Tokimemo 3 was a deliberate attempt to troll the section of the audience who actually used dating sims as an attempt to train themselves for real-life interactions, purely for the malicious enjoyment of the thought of them a) taking this game as final proof that they would never understand the cruel vagaries of the female half of the species or b) actually wearing business suits to amusement parks and decorating their rooms with petrified tree stumps in the mistaken belief that doing so would make them suave-rear end motherfuckers.

Man, you beat me to it. At what point can we assume that this game was intentionally horrible? Okay, so you have to walk a minefield to get any relevant data. Your "friends" are both useless and terrible as human beings. There's an entire system in place for you to dress yourself, that has seemingly no other purpose than to derail you unless you buy more clothes and monitor their usage. It's almost like it's trying to prepare you for a harsh and uncaring outside world. And as a final insult, the local geek is painted in such a negative light that he wears it as a nametag. I missed this last stream but I want to repeat what I said in the first one. I'd love if they were that self-aware. Ideal meta-commentary would have them bring back this stalker/creeping mechanic you have to do here (learning/cataloging everything about girls) but then have your male classmates and friends begin coming up to you or calling you to ask for your details on the girls. Cue the realization that you're the creepy game mechanic guy this time. (I would put the M. Night Shyamalan smilie here but I can't find it/can't remember the code for it.)

Yeah looking over this I have no idea why they introduced this large mechanic when Preening worked great in the first two games to accomplish the same thing. There are a lot of mechanical decisions that seem like they were never QA'd at all, which seems super weird. Life simulation games are relatively simple from a game design perspective so to mess this much up is kind of an achievement all on its own.

Man, I think I was saying this in the stream, but it's amazing how many of these mechanics are similar to GS ones but about a thousand times worse. The clothing system, the post-date chats, the random "is this the right place for the date" thing when you only have one date...the mechanics and additions are good ideas but they were implemented so poorly. They're fun in the GS games, or at least manageable. Not only that, but it's surprising that they decided to forego the name-calling (EVS) feature, after they had it to some extent in TM2 and then brought it back for GS. And that they don't even have the name appear in the text. That's uncomfortable. Speaking of GS, I'm wondering what else you can get from the Christmas party gift selection, and if it's possible for a girl to get your gifts. In GS it's always a very silly coincidental "wow, we got each others gifts, its a christmas miracle!" type event, since you pick out what you're going to buy and give away at the party and the boys all have different preferences. I wish we could get a picture of Rei, for once. That'd look much nicer in our room, although it'd be a depressing glimpse at a better world that we're no longer a part of.

So far it seems like most of the budget went into the characters' outfits. The last game each girl had like two, and we've so far seen about five from Serika alone.

That's probably because 3D models allow them to have more variance in costumes without having to draw several new sprites for different outfits.

The dressing system really doesn't seem to make much sense - how is the player supposed to know how it functions? Its not obvious whether its based on a preset outfit mechanic (how much your clothes match matters) or based on the individual appeal of any particular clothing item to that character or some mix of the two! The least they could have done is made the insufferable prick Shiratori do something useful and demonstrate how to dress. Maybe do a kind of Goofus and Gallant with him and Yabe, giving the player an idea how and how not to dress to impress girls. They also could have also at least given the player a warning after at first instance of improper dressing, as long as the outfit wasn't completely stupid. Like have the girl say 'next time wear something nicer'.

Really, they should've just done it like Girls Side--while I haven't tried that yet (but I just might), it sounds like it does the clothing system considerably better. Makes me wonder if they did TM3 first and GS second--the first seems more like a crude prototype than the second.

You know, I'm at happy that we ended up picking one of the girls that has a sense of style. It makes this game at least a little bit more bearable. But seriously, looking at these past updates, I have to wonder: what the gently caress happened between Tokimeki 2 and 3!? From what I've seen, my thought is that the developers wanted to go towards a more realistic direction, but somehow ended up sucking out all of the charm and uniqueness of 1 and 2. Random-rear end poo poo is awesome, and I kinda have to give the game kudos for allowing you to just haul home junk that you find lying around. One of my friends found a 15 mile per hour sign lying on the ground outside an asylum, hauled it home, and put it in her room, and I have a couple of ostentatious paintings I found at a dump. I vote that we pimp out goon's room with the most absurd crap he can find. Not like anybody's going to come over and see it at this rate, anyway.

A lot of people have been talking about the suit, but one thing you don't get from the screenshots is that Serika is actually pretty pleasant to listen to. Maybe it's just because I can't stand the standard high pitched cutesy voice so much of the Japanese public seems enamored with.

That's the natural voice of a lot of female Japanese teenagers, though anime intensifies the energetic squeakiness of it a bit. Japanese doesn't have the emphasis on a some of the more throaty and dark-sounding sounds that English does (the 'r' sound in warship is a perfect example of a really dark sound that is very uncommon in Japanese), so the accent tends away from chest rumbles that Americans are used to, and culturally associate with calmness. Consequently, even a normally voiced Japanese girl can sound to Americans like she's mainlining caffeine, and any artistic exaggeration makes it sound like she's scoffing at how wussy that caffeine poo poo is and breaking out the cocaine.
