I've never heard anyone describe African countries as "Eastern" before, is this a new thing?

(Well I've heard of "Eastern African countries" but now "eastern countries" in general; I would have though that was in Asia.)

Yeah clearly it does happen and I understand revulsion at the dude/material, I just don't see how you justify criminalizing an act with no identifiable victim. I mean it seems like standard commercial hetero porn is way more problematic in terms of victimizing/exploiting people than a mere drawing could ever be.

There are some definable 'victims' from that sort of thing though, in that it is used by child molesters to groom children, encourages/normalizes the sexualization of children, etc.

I come down pretty hard on the "don't criminalize things just because they are used in the commission of crimes" side of such matters, and I'm also very pro-free-speech in absolute terms, but there are some significant effects of the "use" of such materials and that is something that should be addressed.

Edit: and if "regular" porn (i.e. ANY currently legal porn) is problematic in terms of victimization, at least it exclusively involves people who are adults capable of making informed decisions.

Lolicon and shotacon aren't just "mere drawings" existing in a vacuum. There's a connection between that and the real deal, both through attitudes toward children and in some cases the drawn smut actually being based on real child porn.

The porn industry is definitely a big problem as you describe but the advancements of broadband internet and webcams have meant a surge of amateur porn saturating the market creating a more desirable, cheaper product that the big names can't hope to compete against. The invisible hand of the free market (jerking off the invisible cock) is, interestingly enough, solving the porn problem.

I remember a few years ago the supreme court ruled that it was perfectly legal to sell videos of dog fighting because it was free speech. So there are cases where it's legal to record an illegal act with clear victims and distribute it.

How can people tell unless 1.) the artist mentions it and thus confesses to having seen child porn or 2.) the viewer is familiar with child porn?

Either way, both should result in the person being FBI'd.

It's the latter. There are people in the FBI whose job is to look at child porn reports and try to identify the victims in case they're being repeatedly molested and the like. It's basically the worst job in the world.

Incidentally, internet pedophiles don't understand why they aren't allowed to do the job instead of people who are psychologically destroyed by it. Some of them even offer to do it freelance, pro bono.

It's iffy. Generally, "The East" is generally defined as Asiatic cultures, but Muslim dominant territories in Africa (North and East Africa) have been considered part of it. Africa itself is considered "The South" given the fact that a majority of it's countries are developing nations. More recently, though, "The South" has been redefined as nations that are exploited by global powers, which Africa definitely falls under.

I could spend all day writing a post answering this question, but I don't have the time and I'm sure it would be too long for everyone (including myself). If you want to know more about what the East is, I recommend Orientalism by Edward W. Saïd; it's basically required reading for anyone who wants to understand global geopolitics.

Edit: Unfortunetly, I don't know of anything that's a good, comprehensive introduction to the concept of the Global South.

The OP, a guy I've previously gotten to call for armed insurrection against the US, a guy who used to get drunk and wear an electric anti-barking collar to entertain his party guests, and got kicked out of AFROTC because of grades, disagreed. Slapfights over police response times, use of guns in home defense, and effectiveness/ineffectiveness of other deterrents ensue, and more people join.

I jump in at the end and start poking and get this wonderful response.

We can't keep the crowd waiting, can we?
Recently one group that I follow had been successful in having the page of a group that advocates stalking, harassing, and interfering with the lives of a certain minority removed from Facebook for violating community guidelines. The hate group has put up a new page, and gone immediately back to their ways, leading to new reports of the new page. Of course, we're all getting automated responses that there's nothing wrong with this new page, despite it being the exact same group with the exact same kinds of posts. A tale of social media itself being idiotic, and one that surprises no one, sadly.

(Seriously, Facebook, why is it so loving hard to get a page removed when it's obviously the exact same as the page you removed just hours before?)

I've touched shark skin, it's not made of razorblades. Feels like sandpaper. But yeah, if a species is threatened, you really ought to not touch it because it stresses the animal and that could lead to illness, death, etc.

I think you can pretty easily damage a whaleshark's skin, which can get infected, so you aren't supposed to touch them. You *can* touch them without hurting them, but are you gonna trust some random tourist to not hurt them accidentally?

I was more saying that the gloves are for both your and the shark's protection, because whale sharks have specially-shaped denticles for hydrodynamics that can easily tear their skin if they get caught on something, like say, your skin.
