Somewhat recently I became a big fan of Ayreon, and found I really like my music to have a story. What are some other bands or albums that have an over-arching story with recognizable characters and a plot? I like metal of most kinds but really I can enjoy anything with a melody. I've also been discovering a new found love of Broadway musicals, to give a little perspective.

You might enjoy Lorenguard's Eve of Corruption.

Nice big symphonic power metal concept album that's actually pretty varied (with the realm of power metal) and makes the story dramatic even if it's pretty straightforwards.

Also Kalisia's Cybion - which is pretty much the prog death version of an Ayreon album. So much so that Arjen Anthony Lucassen does a guest vocal spot!

I'd recommend Crippled Black Phoenix - (Mankind) The Crafty Ape; I would say it's something most similar to Ayreon's Human Equation album I've listened to, but bear in mind that it's also prog rock / post rock combination.

Hospice by The Antlers is an album that tells the story of a hospice worker who falls in love with a dying patient. It's an allegory for an abusive relationship too. It's not metal though, it'd be more in the vein of Bon Iver. De-Loused in the Comatorium by the Mars Volta is also pretty good and probably more up your street musically.

I'm sure it's stupid to even suggest, but Operation:Mindcrime, by Queensryche can't go without mention for what you're after.

Wikipedia posted:

The album begins with the protagonist, Nikki, in a hospital. He lies in a near catatonic state, unable to remember anything but snippets from his past. Suddenly, Nikki's memories come flooding back in a torrent. He remembers how, as a heroin addict and would-be political radical frustrated with contemporary society due to the economic inequality, corruption, and hypocrisy around him, he was manipulated into joining a supposed secret organization dedicated to revolution. At the head of this organization is a mysterious political and religious demagogue known only as Dr. X, who manipulates Nikki through a combination of his heroin addiction and brainwashing techniques to become an assassin.

Whenever Dr. X uses the word "mindcrime", Nikki becomes his docile puppet, a state which Dr. X uses to command Nikki to undertake any murder that the Doctor wishes. Through one of Dr. X's probable associates, a corrupt priest named Father William, Nikki is offered the services of a prostitute-turned-nun named Sister Mary. Through his friendship and growing affection toward Sister Mary, Nikki begins to question the nature of what he is doing, seeing that Dr. X has his own nefarious agenda. Dr. X takes notice and, seeing a potential threat in Mary to his cult of personality, orders Nikki to kill both her and the priest. Nikki goes to Mary's church and kills the priest, but, after confronting Mary, he fails to comply with the command to murder her. He and Mary decide to leave the organization together, and Nikki goes to Dr. X to tell him that they are out. Dr. X, however, reminds Nikki that he is an addict, and that he is the one who can provide him with his daily fix. Nikki leaves, conflicted and uncertain, and he returns to Mary only to find her dead.

Nikki cannot cope with the loss, as well as the possibility that he himself may have killed her without knowing it (whether her death occurred at his hand or at the hand of someone else such as Dr. X is left deliberately ambiguous), and he begins to succumb to insanity. He runs through the streets calling her name. The police arrive and attempt to subdue him. A gun is found on Nikki, and they take him into custody under suspicion of Mary's murder and the murders he committed for Dr. X. Suffering from an almost complete loss of memory, Nikki is put into a mental hospital, where he sees a news report on the recent spree of political homicides. This jogs his memory and returns us to the beginning where he remembers what has happened and begins to tell his story.

Some Lady Gaga is along similar lines, but that's the only mainstream stuff I know that's even close to along the lines of what I'm after. And that only hits the pop side.

So I've been in love with this song the past several days and I haven't been able to get it out of my head. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-TibFi4J5A , it's the first dubsted piece of music I actually like but it's probably because it isn't too much dubsteppy. I really like the production on this track as it, atleast for me, adds emotional depth even during the drop. It doesn't overdo itself at all and keeps a natural flow of things without making it feel forced(if that makes any sense at all). It's a hard question, but does anyone know any trance/techno or hell even dubstep that is similar or on the same level? Most of what I've found has been way too fast and it's apparent that the production was based around making it a hit on some dancefloor instead of having a certain emotional element to it. Not that I don't mind it, but it's not something I like listening to with my ipod :v:

I know of Dessa, yes, she's great. She leans a bit singer-songwriter rather than rap though so I didn't want to mention her and possibly throw other people off.

Annaca sounds pretty awesome too and I hadn't heard of her, I'll check out more of her stuff.

After just finding out that The Tunics broke up last December, I'm looking for a band similar to them to fill the void until the lead singer's solo stuff really gets off the ground, because I absolutely love his voice and writing. They're a British indie rock band who sound like this.

Also just in general I'm always looking for more to listen to. I'm currently listening to a lot of Brown Bird (genre ?????), 65daysofstatic (instrumental math/post rock), Polinski (part of 65dos, electronic), Blue Sky Black Death (instrumental trip/hip hop).

TIA for any recommendations.

A couple of punk styles I could use:

My favorite punk band is probably Bomb the Music Industry!, particularly their more recent works (Vacation and Adults!). I would love some more bands that have their sense of big hooks, musicianship and lyrics (although the latter is not a must). I have the obvious Arrogant Sons of Bitches and Jeff Rosenstock solo work. Ska elements are fine but not needed.

I was also surprised at much I loved the most recent Captain, We're Sinking album, as I didn't think I would ever love that style. Any recommendations for modern punk in that vein? I already know the Menzingers, who are cool but I don't like as much.
