Meep!
Going back to the original, discovering the foundation of genetics:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregor_Mendel

The amount of benefit to society and nature (think population genetics, preservation of a species, etc.) which originates with Mendel's work is staggering.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-10_Graphite_Reactor

Ever wonder if anything good came out of the development of the Manhattan Project? How about isotopes, now used heavily in cancer treatments and biomedical research, among other things? The X-10 graphite reactor directly led to some pretty astounding medical achievements.

I love clicking the back story on this guys posts. It's a story of him getting a dog and instantly falling in love.

Pets are great antidepressants. Dogs are especially helpful because they make you go for walks and get some drat fresh air instead of lying down feeling hopeless all the time, which cats tend to enable.

Is that a shih tzu? I laughed so hard at this. My parents used to have an old grump of a shih tzu who was 24-7 cat police. Oscar was not even about to let cat shenanigans happen on his watch.

The scientists worked hard on improving the extract and then a second dose of injections were administered on Thompson. The results were spectacular.

The scientists went to the other wards with diabetic children, most of them comatose and dying from diabetic keto-acidosis. They went from bed-to-bed and injected them with the new purified extract - insulin. This is known as one of medicines most dramatic moments. Before injecting the last comatose children, the first started to awaken from their comas.

If that isn't uplifting, I don't know what is. I live in the same city as the jackass genetics company Myriad Genetics, who until recently had held patents on breast cancer testing. They fought it all the way to the supreme court and lost, to protect profits over helping humanity. gently caress those guys.

Jonas Salk invented the first widely used vaccine for polio, and is a major part of the reason why polio went from an epidemic to almost unheard of in the Western world.

When he was asked in a televised interview who owned the patent to the vaccine, Salk replied: "There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?"
