Going back to the original, discovering the foundation of genetics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregor_Mendel The amount of benefit to society and nature (think population genetics, preservation of a species, etc.) which originates with Mendel's work is staggering. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-10_Graphite_Reactor Ever wonder if anything good came out of the development of the Manhattan Project? How about isotopes, now used heavily in cancer treatments and biomedical research, among other things? The X-10 graphite reactor directly led to some pretty astounding medical achievements.

Dogs are especially helpful because they make you go for walks and get some drat fresh air instead of lying down feeling hopeless all the time, which cats tend to enable.
