How about isotopes, now used heavily in cancer treatments and biomedical research, among other things? The X-10 graphite reactor directly led to some pretty astounding medical achievements.

Dogs are especially helpful because they make you go for walks and get some drat fresh air instead of lying down feeling hopeless all the time, which cats tend to enable.
