The sound quality is as good as a regular episode, the crowd is good, and Seth seems as comfortable as he is in the studio. Though I would have liked for them to have given that Ask Amy questioner even more poo poo, and unless I'm mistaken they didn't mention Amy's terribly misguided response.

Saw the SF show with girlfriend, who hadn't listened to anything beyond the craigshouse compilation. She found Seth funny, but just couldn't stand Jonathan. We were talking about it afterwards, and she described him as completely devoid of any understanding of the moral or political implications of his statements or actions. That show in particular, he casually threw out "human being" in SF on the eve of pride week, not to mention a couple n-bombs. I admit sometimes I lose patience with Jah's shtick, but for the most part, I usually enjoy listening to the guy digging himself deeper, on a Karl Pilkington-like level, especially when Seth is there to give him poo poo and steer the conversation in the right direction. Still, she was saying how she only found him offensive, and I suddenly remembered the episode where he sexually assaulted a girl (ep. 70, 7:30). I went back to listen, and he outright admits to raping a classmate while high on weed and coke, almost as an aside to another story, and laughing the whole time. Seth even calls him out on it, keeping it light as he can. The closest Jah comes to acknowledging anything was wrong is when she didn't respond to him on myspace many years later. So yeah, I have to agree with her: at some point the incorrigible doofus who yells at bank tellers and likes dogs more than people really stops being a clown and starts being a disgusting rear end in a top hat. I'm torn about this because I love UYD, but had to stop midway through the last episode. I know a large part of the show is them talking about hosed-up poo poo that went down in the past, but while Seth's stories are mostly history and now he gets to go on the best rants about sobriety, Jonathan is unrepentant and still loving up (like the implied but not confirmed incident of drunk driving a couple months ago) and generally being a dick. I'm mentioning this because I want to hear some other fans thoughts about this. Maybe it's all supposed to be an indulgent exploration of white male American culture, but in that case, be careful about listening to it with any sociology grad students with an emphasis on race and gender.

And he stole highly valuable pornography from migrant, homeless day laborers. I fully accept Jah as a former awful person that would steal from many people, such as that well-meaning Native employee of his school, who is now grown up to be an awful person that has developed a measure of restraint, but only up until he loses it and is released to the whims of his incredibly self-centric mindset. This inner awfulness is part of what melds him into Seth like a pb&j, inseparable and better together due to their polarity. Seth's former drug crazy years seem to have been edifying and calming while Jah would believe himself to have had a similar journey, but was in fact a totally opposite experience.

That show in particular, he casually threw out "human being" in SF on the eve of pride week, not to mention a couple n-bombs. I think it's fair to say that there is enough evidence to show he's kind of a bad person. Or, to be charitable to him, he's a person who has done, and still does, some bad things. Things that just aren't defensible in my opinion. I suspect he thinks that fundamentally he's a 'good guy' with progressive values. He probably is, mostly. No one's perfect! However, my feeling is that if he was seriously challenged about some of his more problematic behaviours he would become quite defensive and self-righteous about it. I think it's because, in Jonathon's mind, his concept of self is incompatible with "slur", "sexism", "bully" or "rape". He's a 'good guy', and a good guy would never and can never be associated with that stuff. Anyway, that's my two cents worth of bullshit armchair psychology. Jah's OK, I still find him funny and I still listen to the show and enjoy it, but I don't condone some of the things he (and Seth) says and does, to the point where I'm careful about who I recommend the show to in real life, and whenever I do I always provide a caveat, i.e. "This show is funny, I think you'll like it and really get what they're going for, but sometimes the hosts..." etc. Maybe people will dismiss this as 'political correctness gone mad' or 'SJW trigger warning BS', but I think that would be a pretty uncharitable and white-washed interpretation. EDIT: VVVVVVV KICK BAMA KICK posted:Can we skip the next half-page and go straight to the part where we all say "Hey thread, are you cool?" I mean yeah, of course, not everything has to be constantly dissected through the social justice rubric to the nth degree, and we don't all need to lay about practicing self-flagellation because we're all horrible people. But we shouldn't pretend it doesn't exist either. It's not wrong to talk seriously in a circlejerk thread every once and awhile. C'mon, man. I agree, we all like to switch off and enjoy the funny sometimes, but we're all earnest here aren't we? I dislike SJW-gone-mad beaviour too, but I don't think this is it. Jah had a really squeamish look on his face when Seth made the joke about how there should be more school shootings at DJ colleges. It was interesting to see live how they riff too hard for each other at times. I'd always wondered what it would look like when one takes it further than the other wanted to go with it.

Hey Jonathan comes off as an rear end in a top hat from time to time, and there's enough evidence to prove, that he may be one. But that whole drunk driving thing was based on him saying he went to McDonald's one night, and people just assumed he drove right? Do we really need to grasp at straws like that? How come Seth isn't getting any flack? There's been stories on the show where his drunk driving has been brought up, like the time he parked on a high curb and slept under the car. Now that probably happened way back in the late 90's or early 00's, but at least that's not based on "Well it was at night, and it seems like something Jah would do … "

So there are one or two things Jonathan has said that you don't like over the course of 400+ hours of recorded material and that makes him an rear end in a top hat? These guys have given us an immense amount of insight into their lives but don't act like you know them just because you listen to their podcast.

When she asked why I just paid $60 dollars for the two of us to listen to a rapist, I found it pretty hard to justify on the spot. Honestly, I knew it would be a derail to bring it up, but I didn't want an argument; I brought this to the thread because I want to keep listening, and just needed some outside perspective. I'd hate to think I have to turn it off or fast forward whenever Jah starts saying poo poo I disagree with, because half the time his rants are great. I love referencing the time he went to traffic court and was surrounded by degenerates. Then he mentions how Seth would never end up there because he's borderline-OCD levels of paranoid, and how in Jah's opinion, life has gotten so complicated these days that that's the bare minimum amount of effort required not gently caress something up. So your only options in modern life are to be constantly stumbling, or drive yourself crazy trying to stay on top of it all. That's a savant like insight that could only come from somebody so used to dropping the ball talking with, well, whatever amazing personality Seth is. And I think that speaks to the strength of the duo and the podcast as a whole; they are such a contrasted pairing that works so amazingly well together. Seeing them live was uncanny because the chemistry is so clear, listening to the recordings feels exactly like being right there in the room with them. Some of you hit the nail on the head; it isn't about either individual, who've both admitted to past discretions, but this huge thing they've built together, started because they wanted to be better people. Also, Cortez, if you don't care if a comedian rapes women, gently caress off and watch the Cosby Show. Later, fruits! *peels out*
