I saw Steve Martin+Edie Brickell+The Steep Canyon Rangers last night. If you ever get the chance to see them, do it. Even if the tickets are 80 bucks. Or 200. It'll be worth it. That was one of the best concerts I've ever seen, and it doesn't hurt that Steve Martin is still very, very funny. I like their studio albums fine, but in a live setting they really bring it up to a whole new level. I just wish they'd subsidize tour costs with the gold fiddle Nicky Sanders has to have won off the devil at some point.

So Shovels and Rope have a new album coming out, called 'Swimmin' Time'. They've released a video of one of the tracks off it, 'The Devil Is All Around', which you can view here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1n7FAsiezo Sounding good.

So lately I've been really getting into Buck Owens, specifically the era when Don Rich was in the band. A few years ago while going through Buck's tape library, they found a forgotten recording session from 1970. That session was the only solo album Don Rich ever recorded. It was released last year and man, is it ever good. The CD is all covers of George Jones hits and it sounds amazing. http://www.amazon.com/Sings-George-Jones-Don-Rich/dp/B00AJ3TOF0/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

I got the new Old Crow album in the mail today. Still lacks the old bite. Still manages to be too drat good to ignore. "8 dogs, 8 banjos" pays for the album. "Brave Boys" sounds a lot like 'Carry me back', I can take that too. Big Beef City fucked around with this message at 01:37 on Jul 2, 2014 |

The full LP, titled Dead Man's Town, will be released on September 16th through Lightning Rod Records, but here you can listen to the album's opener, Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires' version of the iconic title track. I may pick this up as the track list looks pretty interesting. 1. Jason Isbell & Amanda Shires, "Born in the U.S.A." 2. Apache Relay, "Cover Me" 3. Quaker City Nighthawks, "Darlington County" 4. Blitzen Trapper, "Working on the Highway" 5. Joe Pug, "Downbound Train" 6. Low, "I'm on Fire" 7. Holly Williams, "No Surrender" 8. Ryan Culwell, "Bobby Jean" 9. Trampled by Turtles, "I’m Goin’ Down" 10. Justin Townes Earle, "Glory Days" 11. Nicole Atkins, "Dancing in the Dark" 12. North Mississippi All-Stars, "My Hometown"

Huh, I saw him last year, completely unfamiliar with the music, and it was far and away the worst concert I have seen in years. Every song sounded the same and his guitar was so overpowering you legit could not hear the piano or bass. Just the drums and his guitar, and it was terrible. The openers were phenomenal (that's where I discovered Jonny Fritz, which I mentioned earlier in the thread) and their sound wasn't bad so I can't really blame the venue. I was totally let down

I was totally let down Sorry to hear that. I saw them in Knoxville at a festival earlier this year, and I came away impressed. Not sure why my experience was different than yours, but we all know that happens at different shows. That said I did find that Moore's banjo got overpowered by the rest of the band at times. Still it was a great atmosphere at the show I saw them perform at. Funny the band that played after them was Shovels & Rope, which was the main reason I was there. I saw them a year ago in a bar in Asheville, and they was great. That said at this festival in Knoxville they was a big letdown. Their sound was awful, and something was just off during the show. One last thing, my biggest disappointment live has been Steve Earle. I've seen him twice in Knoxville (recently as last year, and I had front row tickets), and both times I came away disappointed. I am a big Steve Earle fan (his music was my gateway to Americana music), but he is so underwhelming live (maybe age is catching up with him). Still he did at least kill it on 'Bem McCulloch' last time I saw him.

If any of you guys are band members of OCMS I just want you to know that I think that you're personally very talented, but whoever is directing you is terrible. Why are you doing this?

dk2m posted:I have developed a love for ambient country or whatever the hell it's called. Basically, I should feel like a loner walking through the desert of Arizona with my horse named Apache and a bad attitude. Ry Cooder's Paris, Texas soundtrack, some of Sumner McKane's work (even though he tends to go the more post-rock route), Daniel Lanois' soundtrack to Sling Blade are just some examples. Something about the sparseness of the twangy, reverbed out guitar and the beautiful slide guitar sound just sends chills up my spine. I know this is an old post, but if anyone else is looking for more of this kind of stuff, John Zorn's arrangement of Morricone's "Once Upon a Time in the West" is pretty amazing (way less chill than Cooder or Lanois, but less wacky than Zorn can get at times.) It definitely fits the bad attitude vibe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO4oAL_ALnQ Which reminds me, jazz legend Bill Frisell has done several bluegrass/country/whatever albums, the best of which is appropriately titled Nashville. A bunch of people from Alison Krauss' band (and her brother) are on it.

I saw Hank III live Monday night, and what an insane performer. He did a 4 hour show with no opener. The first 2 hours was his outlaw country stuff, then 30 minutes of punk, about an hour of Doom metal, and the last 30 minutes was 3Bar Ranch (metal with an auctioneer I think). How in the hell does he do this every night, and he is my age. Now I am a old school metalhead from my younger years, but the highlight was his country set. He played every song I had a desire to hear (I am a big fan of the Straight to Hell album), and the crowd was insane. Of course even the country set felt like I was at a punk show (yes there was a mosh pit even during that set). Luckily my old rear end was up front, but even that got stupid crazy during songs like PFF. Another highlight was he played Sleep's Dopesmoker during the Doom set. Overall I was really impressed with the atmosphere he created and the show overall. I would go see him again in a heartbeat, but I would leave after the punk set next time. My ears are still ringing, and I was useless yesterday.

I don't know lots of the story behind it, but it was told to me that even though they were both married, the guitarist had a thing for her. She had her husband there with them almost all the time because he was their manager or something and the guitarist's family was back home in Tennessee or something and he hated that. That puts a lot of the blame on him, but I don't know if that is the reason the group split up. As far as I can tell, there were only rumors of them having a thing for each other (or one way). They both deny that was ever the case. Until they spill the beans, who knows?
