I got called a fascist the other day in a Hobby Lobby argument because I asked him why the 'voluntary agreement' between an employee and employer is different than the structurally similar one between the government and employer. I told him his answers of 'just because' and 'government force' wasn't an adequate enough answer. I think he's just mad that I've started calling him out on his bullshit.

Anyway, ever since then, she routinely uses the word 'neger' in conversation and then throws a meaningful look at me hoping for a response. It's real petty and annoying. During senior year in high school, I tried to explain the concept of institutional racism and white privilege to a classmate, and he immediately retorted "well black people are racist because they benefit from Affirmative Action!" Probably didn't help that since the student body was filthy rich (and just about all of us were incredibly sheltered) I didn't have much of a grasp on the concept myself.

Americans would be horrified if they could read the way Europe (including the 'centre-left') has been talking about race for some time now. Belgium is even worse than the rest of Western Europe. Many local media figures and politicians mocked the 'typical Dutch political correctness' or got downright angry at black people who protested the use of blackface. At least in the Netherlands there was some restraint and some celebrities publicly supported changing the custom. In Belgium I haven't really heard of a single public figure who has had the balls. corn in the bible posted:There is a new report saying this. HUGE PUBES A PLUS posted:Had a friend on AIM freaking out about this. He also sent me this link. The two reports linked contradict themselves in their rush to overstate the NSA's claims and actions. The supposedly horrifying comments in the leaked code are saying that they're monitoring the sites in question because Tor is used by extremists, not that everyone who uses it is an extremist: leaked code comment posted:These variables define terms and websites relating to the TAILs (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) software program, a comsec mechanism advocated by extremists on extremist forums. They're presumably tracking people going to the sites associated with these tools because they can compare that sample of users with the sample of users who use the app and other groups to cross-identify them with whomever their target population is. Like a lot of the NSA leaks, it's not novel, incriminating or interesting beyond the breathless, Rall-style coverage. On the bright side, the comments left under the articles by paranoid schizophrenics are fun.

Prosopagnosiac posted:They should have to watch this movie: http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0215545/ before they form an opinion about it. It's not entirely clear where Zwarte Piet originates. According to some sources, he was a Moorish slave that Sinterklaas picked up in Spain. According to other sources, earlier versions of the story had a demon or the devil as Sinterklaas' helper/slave. It seems likely that the earlier versions had a demon but that this was changed to a caricature of a black man in 1850. The role has become less blatantly offensive throughout the years - going from an idiot who barely speaks Dutch to more of a trickster role as of recent. The look of the character hasn't really changed, though, despite an effort during the seventies to reframe Zwarte Piet as only being black from climbing down chimneys to deliver gifts. (ignoring the big red lips and the frizzy black hair) It's obviously racist as hell, especially considering the history of both the Netherlands and Belgium, but it's seen as tradition and people get up in arms about it real easy. It doesn't help that it's an incredibly widespread tradition, so unless you grew up in a region where Sint Maarten is preferred (he's like Sinterklaas but different), chances are you dressed up as Zwarte Piet at some point. Hell, I dressed up as him back during primary and secondary school, before I knew any better. Literally everyone I know used to watch the hugely popular show Dag Sinterklaas (which, admittedly, did own) which had a white actor in blackface. (I'll add that it was partially responsible for pushing a more positive portrayal of Zwarte Piet). That involvement makes it harder for most people to accept how hosed up the practice is. Add to that the fact that it's not meant to be malicious or racist in any way and it's hard for people to accept that it needs to change. Ultimately, it's all rather silly. Just change it. It's not hard. Get rid of the blackface, the red lips and the frizzy hair. You've got enough left to keep things entertaining and the kids don't care either way. But yeah, very touchy subject here.

R. Mute posted:That wouldn't work. As I mentioned in my earlier post, people here consider racism in America and racism in Belgium to be two different things. There's something to that - Zwarte Piet isn't a Minstrel, 'neger' isn't 'friend of the family.' But that doesn't mean that they aren't offensive in their own way. The problem is that people usually sweep American examples off the table rather easily - they see the specific example, but don't see the underlying universal point. drat good post right here
