Christoff posted:I don't know what's worse being barked at by an old Filipino CS or cleaning up after nobles or personally delivering their laundry We made sure the guys up in the wardroom were taken care of. They typically got off earlier than anyone else, as well, because we didn't serve dinner upstairs in port. The chiefs would talk up cranking in the mess as the best, but most hated it because you had the galley right next to you so the CSes had their claws in you so much easier. That and a bunch of the chiefs were entitled fucks. The wardroom cranks didn't have to clean our staterooms, but the chief's cranks had to clean the chief's berthings.

Ok I got this. Historically they use to be called stewards and the rating was usually all black until right after ww2. This all makes sense now.

Some of that job is now done by two rates - CS (cooks) and SH (laundry, snack machines, ship's store, and barbershop).

I met a guy at MEPS who actually signed up specifically to get SH so he could get his barber license. Planes on opening a shop after getting out. I suppose it's no worse than my plan but goddamn aim a little higher dude.

Yeah but I mean SH is so broad there's a chance he'll never cut hair? They get a license out of that?

Yeah, there is that chance but only the dumbest senior leadership doesn't try to get an enthusiastic (non-retarded) guy an NEC, especially if it has direct CO visibility like haircuts or captain's mess.

So it was never brought up during my recruiting process but is it possible to go boot without being assigned a rating or is it something you earn by failing your A school? I'm guessing being a paint scraper and sludge cleaner isn't an actual rating.

Yes a lot of people still fall for going in as an undesignated seaman or airman. I think there's also some kind of "open" contract were you'll get one of a handful of jobs decided for you at boot camp.

Yeah I used to laugh when chiefs would say that guys "loved" cranking in the Chief's Mess because they "tipped" down there. Especially when those same cranks would tell me how much they hated it. The guys up in the wardroom were on easy street. Mostly we just BSed with them about football, movies, and beautiful women all day and left them alone. Despite what everyone says about nobles, most of really do understand how bad it sucks to be a junior enlisted sailor. Especially one sent to crank.

As a Methodist I can confirm that most of our weddings are lame. I was told afterwards that mine was pretty kickin. The fact that one of my buddies woke up half naked, and up to his nipples in the St Johns River the next day gives me empirical evidence that it was.

Selling leave is never worth it, right? I have about 60 days of leave saved and get out soonish. Not sure if they're going to let me do terminal leave or not. It's 50/50 at this point. And no one has an answer if you can take over 30. Some say you can take 30 come back for a week then take 30 again. I think my units policy is 30 days max I know some commands people take large amounts Forgot to add I'd like to get out early but not much going on at work since I'm getting out and have been skating a lot more so if I don't get terminal I won't be too bummed. What date is the use it or lose it for leave days? Sometime in November? Nostalgia4Dogges fucked around with this message at 20:24 on Jul 7, 2014 |

It's 50/50 at this point. Wasn't it you who asked about the leave time frame deal a few weeks ago? The 30-60 day policies are command dependent. If their max is 30 days then you take 30 days, come back for a day, take 30 of terminal. Put your chits in now - if they don't want you to take leave like that then you need to start taking your leave now. You earned your vacation days and selling them back is a dumb idea. Have you started looking at college for spring semester?

# ? Jul 7, 2014 21:53 |

You can use 100% of your leave left for terminal based upon your command's discretion. You may also be eligible for permissive TAD for a few days of free leave. If you can take it as terminal, take it versus selling it. If you're using it as terminal you get bah and bas still. If you sell it back you just get the basic pay rate.
