I actually enjoyed the original Witcher as well. There were some parts that really dragged (the loving swamp for example) but mostly it was a good game set in an interesting world.

Persona 3 FES: There's a status condition, I forget which one it is, I guess it's Fear, but it makes every hit against you critical and sometimes causes you to lose your turn. It wouldn't be a problem normally, but when you encounter groups of 2-5 enemies who can cast it on the entire party, even if it misses on 2-3 of your party members, it will probably get most of you if all of the enemies are casting it, which they will be. The safest thing to do is run, but since it makes you lose your turn you can't always do that (you can only tell your player character to run, not the rest of the party. And if he dies it's a game over.)

Dishonored is a really great steampunk Deus Ex but there's one side quest in the Flooded District that's completely broken. You have to escort some npcs to the back of a building without alerting the patrols. Simple enough but when I finished the rest of the level I got a mission failed notice even though I got the dialogue telling me I passed. Looked it up and you have to find a random corpse in the building and leave it with the npcs to pass the mission. No explanation behind it, you just have to do that to pass it.

Playing the PS4 launch game Knack and its gimmick is that the main character can grow bigger by adding more of these "relics" to his body. You'd think something like that would be tied to a progression based system where the further you get in the game the bigger he gets. Instead its just kind of random throughout levels.

A Mod for Civ 4 called 'Caveman to Cosmos' adds like, hundreds of new techs and units and so much stuff and it's amazing and great and then you research something and where before you had Spock reading out quotes, you get some nasally nerd with a really strange speech pattern raspily reading out quotes. It's awful. And there's like 3 different guys and one of their mics just has ATTROCIOUS quality. I get that it's a mod and I can't exactly expect Spock, but jesus I cringe everytime I research something now.

No FarCry 3, I really don't need you to re-play the long rear end conversation I just had every time I either re-load the game or complete an optional side mission. Also, why did you wait until the end-game to give us the wing suit? That thing is sweet as hell and I would have loved to play with it for longer.

At some point, you unlock the ability to see who you cleared a given level with. I think it's once you unlock World Crown. You do NOT need to clear each level five times to unlock Crown, you just need to get all the collectables in each stage and get all the gold flags once. 100% doesn't net you anything other than the stamps.

Two examples: In Saints Row IV you have to finish the game to get to use the mech suit outside of its specific missions and activities. Right near the end of Hydrophobia: Prophecy you suddenly get this water-manipulation power. It's not even that good, I just don't understand why the left it for so late in the game.

I picked up The Wolf Among Us during the Steams sale, and I just started the first episode. Wolf's voice actor is not suited to the role at all, and it drags me out of the story every time I hear him speak. After recently finishing Transistor, I'm especially irritated, as that game had a horrible VA, too (if you've played it you know exactly who I'm talking about). In Transistor the VA was good at least, he just didn't match the character design in the slightest. Wolf's VA doesn't sound like Wolf looks, and turns in a bad performance to boot.

That Dynamic stuff was present to some degree in the original one, right? I know the Director placed/moved various items and spawns based on your progress and ability, but I don't remember for certain if it did other poo poo too. It certainly sounds like a fun as gently caress feature, though. Also you also have issues with these spergs and their meta game, and their need for consistency. That the game needs to be balanced to their needs, so they can have the optimal run with the best time and the most efficient weapon. Payday 2 has similar issues with it's higher difficulties. The game becomes bland and uniteresting, despite the high amounts of cop murder, because you need the exact right built with the right weapons with the right guns to even be able to complete the mission. Which is loving stupid.
|
# ? Jul 7, 2014 06:51 |
Speaking of Payday 2 the cops get such neat gear that you never get to use. There should be a mission where you get to play as a Cloaker and Taser and whatnot. Don't even need to make new enemy models, just say that you're digging up information on a corrupt department or something , the Taser and Cloak is pretty awesome. Also the shoguns you get are kinda eh. Or at least the ones I got. Killer is Dead is dragged down by how badly it wants to be Killer7 but fails in every way.

You listen to the director's commentary of a Valve game and you start wondering why they invite such rookies to their playtest and suspect them of dumbing down the game. Then you play other/older games and you note all the problems that those kind of folks would have solved. I remember playing Sin (the '98 FPS) and being completely stumped at a certain section. It was obvious that I needed to do do something with a pipeline so water would fill up the pit I was standing in, but I couldn't find out what. So I looked up a walkthrough. Turns out I needed to look ALL THE WAY up and shoot at some planks or crates being held up by a crane, so they would bust the pipe open. No visual cues, no audio cues.

I'm not sure if Valve necessarily gets it right all the time either. Portal 2 was kind of weirdly uneven and I assume it was at least partly due to their playtesting methods. I've completely locked myself out of a pretty big questline in Two Worlds 2 because apparently you have to talk to a certain NPC twice after rescuing her. Which wouldn't be a big deal except the first time you talk to her after the rescue she basically tells you to leave/come back later and talk to her again. Except if you leave the building the door permanently locks and you can never return to her. If you don't talk to her the second time, a door you need never unlocks so you can't do the next step in the quest. So what you're supposed to do I guess is completely ignore what she says and just keep hammering the dialogue buttons? I knew the game was pretty poo poo quality going in, but I do get tired of feeling like I'm constantly fighting the glitchiness to progress. Even most Bethesda RPGs haven't been this bad. I'm on the PC version too and apparently there aren't even console commands that can unlock the doors or set the quest stage.

If the sequel can pack in as much scenery, set-pieces and grotesque charm like the Dead Eels level it could stand to be the best Deus-Thief-Em-Up ever.

It's been said before but the randomized bone charms in Dishonored were frustrating, especially when paired with their awful balance and the fact that there were so many different playstyles; charms like the one that let you choke out guards almost instantly were a necessity for non-lethal playthroughs but it all came down to an RNG whether you got that at all in favor of the ability to drink from sinks or recover slightly more health from food. And with one exception all the bone charms are decided when you load the map so you can't even cheese it by reloading until you get a good one. Same thing with Gear in Bioshock Infinite. It's almost funny how you can get gear that gives you abilities while riding skylines a good map or two before you even encounter skylines for the first time.

The worst thing, the worst loving thing about loving Dishonored, is that there's no in-mission stats screen, so God loving help you if you're trying to ghost a stage. You have to keep one manual save per five minutes at minimum, and if at the end of your hour+ long loving ordeal the game tells you that someone spotted you at some point, well, gently caress you, bitch. Why not take an educated guess at which part of the level you hosed up because Dishonored isn't going to tell you poo poo. You load back to where you think is the most likely place that you hosed up and replay the entirety of the rest of the level, again, in full, to completion. Still spotted? Guess what FUCKFACE, your completely context-free assumption of where you hosed up was WRONG, and now you get to play the rest of the level again, from the next earliest checkpoint that you might have ostensibly hosed up in the solid hour you were originally playing this game. There are achievements for this. Achievements! Someone played through this loving game, and decided that at no point being able to access your mission stats during gameplay was not only not an oversight, but actively loving desirable, and just smiled and nodded it through QA. That same person later went back to their empty apartment, laid a large blue tarpaulin on the living room carpet, and paid handsomely for a Japanese prostitute to poo poo in their mouth.

I've been playing a lot of CS:GO for the last month and when the new operation came out I shelled out 5 euro to participate beacuse hell why not. As part of the deal you get missions which reward you with skins and boxes. Boxes which can be sold for 2-4 euro a pop on the market so I've already gotten my money back. It's pretty cool. What bums me the gently caress out is that you get a limited amount of missions (max 2 at a time), they're random drops for winning and since they're undroppable (as far as I know) you're pretty much forced to finish them if you want more. This has forced me to get acquainted with the new community maps introduced as part of the operation. The problem is that with the exception of Castle and the oil platform one they're all awful messes which suck to play. For example the draw distance fog gimmick on one of the maps (which I loathe btw) is a performance disaster which makes the FPS of myself and everyone I know drop like a stone. If Valve is going to make us play lovely community maps trough matchmaking the least they could do is actually polish them up.

It'd be good if a game like Dishonored was divided into missions that could freely be revisited. Let's say you finish a mission completely unseen and you get a badge for ghosting it. Achievements could hinge on getting every ghost badge. You could freely replay a mission until you get every possible badge in the one run. In a game not strictly divided into missions, like DXHR, the player should be given a personal record detailing the number of people killed, alarms set off and shots fired. Basically the same thing like in Fallout 3, New Vegas and Skyrim. I hear that for all the poo poo the Thief reboot got, it had a nifty custom difficulty system. You could choose to get a game-over if you are ever spotted by a hostile target, or should you accidentally kill someone. Inspector Gesicht has a new favorite as of 14:25 on Jul 7, 2014 |

I also don't dig that Dishonored doesn't display your Chaos score openly during missions. In general, the Chaos mechanic is weird and sort of arbitrary. Killing people raises your Chaos score, and not killing them reduces it. But stealing plague cures from poor people, killing active plague vectors and robbing rich dudes blind does nothing. What up with that?

The other problem with the Far Cry 3 wingsuit is that if you haven't deployed your parachute yet hitting the terrain in any way kills you instantly. So I would keep taking running jumps from ridges and dying when they aren't quite steep or high enough.

This is why the methods of non-lethally disposing of targets and the rewards for doing so are almost always completely divorced from the rest of the level. It's especially awkward with the Pendleton Twins, since the nonlethal takedown for them is to do a completely unrelated sidequest for some guy in a completely different map and when you get back to the pub Lord Treavor talks about how he feels bad about having them killed and then you go upstairs and there's a letter from him going "oh btw I heard you didn't actually kill them thanks " because they couldn't add new voice acting.
