I just got into an argument with a friend-of-a-friend on Facebook about this silly PAC. Eventually I put forth a big old effort post (as both a poli sci major and actual activist) on why this is a lovely idea, and how if people want to make a difference they should be donating to candidates/to charity/go out and volunteer. The other part responds saying that she is lazy and doesn't want to put in the effort required, so she just was going to give money. I honestly did not know what to say; how do you engage with someone like that? (rhetorical question)

You can sabre-rattle for electoral reform but there are many powerful, and deeply entrenched interests for whom the status quo is working just fine, and they'll fight to defend it.

On the other hand, NZ not only adopted MMP in a referendum, they kept it with a second one.

You're absolutely right, though, that electoral reform is not going to happen by financing a country-wide campaign. People like to believe that everyone just KNOWS what's wrong with the electoral system and if we just tell people there are alternatives and make a referendum happen we'll get it. It's a lot more complex than that. Any push for electoral reform is going to have to happen from the bottom-up, not being enforced from above, but the nature of electoral reform is that it's difficult to maintain a really strong, passionate movement for it - unlike, say, minimum wage or labour rights.

Not only that, but the timing of most discussions on electoral reform is usually right after an election, so it's very easy to paint the advocates as sore losers. Ontario's referendum on it came on the same day as the general election, so it was prepared in advance, but as I said, it was soundly defeated.

However, I still don't think a change in how the people in power get picked would really do much to alter a culture that has become inherently toxic, especially in the U.S. where the sheer amount of money changing hands has way more to do with what happens than the box the voters tick every couple of years. The ultrarich are still going to have a much greater amount of influence in a system were money is speech.

'Casino Jack and the United States of Money' is really an amazing documentary. If you watch it, there is no loving way the man has reformed. We're talking about a guy who had Grover Noquist as his second in command when he was in the young Republicans and was so in love with Freedom Fighters who were fighting against the commies in the 1980s (the Contras, Mujaheddin, Savimbi), Abramoff sponsored a Freedom Fighter convention. In loving Angola.

And he is a free market sociopath, in the sense that 'the government should let me bilk as much money from suckers as possible, exploit as many workers as possible and I shouldn't be arrested'. He left Saipan worse off than it was before. I mean, you had foreing workers begging congressmen who went there (and actually looked into the garment industry and didn't stay at 5 star hotels on Abramoff's dime) to find people to buy their organs so they could leave. It was basically Dubai in the West, in that if you were a foreign worker you were massively in debt to the people that got you the job and your employer took your passport and held it until you paid that absurd amount before you could leave (around $6-7k for some). And these people want this guy associated with them? It is lunacy.

This is true. But still, even if you don't care what company you keep, Abramoff is a scumbag conman who is going to milk you dry. I mean, he is basically going up to them and saying: "Oh, I know I called my Indian clients troglodytes and less than human when they refused my outrages fees and promised them another trail of tears if they donated to Democrats. I also closed one of their casinos in the interest of one tribe so the other tribe could hire me to re-open it. But I'm really reformed and I want to help you out!"

You have to be seriously mentally deficient to go 'I want some of that!' instead of 'How about you go and gently caress off'.

So a bunch of gullible people got together and raised enough money to.. buy a house in Aspen. WOOO!

If anything this all stands as proof positive that the majority of Americans still have no loving clue how massive the income disparity has become. You can not out spend the rich.. they are "rich" because they have money (duh), and in America's case they have the majority of the money by every metric. The only effective ways to challenge them are with mass political upheaval using grassroot local politics, or the much faster French Revolution method, which hell in this case would only need to take out 100 or so individuals to basically change the face of political spending.

Different people have different perspectives - he seems to have been brought on the bilk money out of the Reddit-and-4chan crowd, where his message of "you don't have to stop being a disgusting nerd who openly fetishizes children's shows just because you're an adult with a real job and political aspirations" probably rings true with more than a few people. Watch the bottom of the page for the MayOne SA banner ad and its slogan "The Internet has a SuperPAC" - they're clearly hoping Boyko's appeal to the freaky internet pervert demographics will make up for the incredibly miniscule risk that the media will bother to pay any real scrutiny into an organization like theirs.

The end goal for oligarchs like Koch and Abramoff is just to have a big sign at every polling place 'Abandon All Hope, Ye who enter here' - things like this MayDay scam are meant to drive disillusionment.

On the face of it they want the wallet to be part of the 'ballot or bullet' dynamic - but they've really just settled on the bullet since they can entrench themselves at the top of social hierarchy.
