He also had a paypal account he was having people send money to directly. The video on indiegogo is ok, and some of the reward text is funny, but yes he is literally just asking for money. I get the joke, and I think it could be an ok sketch or if it was fixed funding instead of flexible funding I would have no problem with it. As it is though, all these begging tweets are "jokes" but at the end of the day people are sending him money as a result of him begging for it.

Even as a sketch I don't think it would be a gut-buster or anything. If anyone is like howling with laughter and wants to give me what-for for not seeing the hilarity I would love to hear it because I just can't imagine it.

I guess maybe he's trolling and my bewilderment is the whole point? but that definitely isn't the way he's presenting it anywhere, and I'm not sending him tersely worded emails or anything, I'm just not going to buy his book.

That indiegogo thing has 500 bucks in it (on a $1.000.000 goal) and Todd put 400 of those in there himself. Even if people are misunderstanding the bit or whatever you're "grossed out" by and even if he got to keep the money when the thing doesn't raise A MILLION DOLLARS it would still at the most be enough for Todd to get himself a new bubble machine or whatever.

I did chuckle at one or two tweets to be honest. Mostly at when people got angry. But It's mostly a series of tweets and tweets rarely make me laugh. They're usually amusing and take a second to read.

I can't see how it's a waste of any goodwill. Am I not supposed to trust him now? He's not lying about the money or what he's doing with it. Even if he walked away with all of it with just a thanks then that's fine. He earned it. He didn't steal it or anything. He's a comedian. It's just a bit. No, it isn't a killer bit or anything like that. It's just something for him to play off of. People who like him and his comedy gave him some money and that's great. You don't have to give him anything. I know I haven't but that's not the point. If it makes you feel better donate some money to a LGBT organization and tell him that's what you did with the money instead. You'll feel less gross, you'll make a point and he'll feel good too. Wins all around.

Anybody else bought Todd Glass' book? I got it but I haven't read it yet.

I wish Todd had done the audiobook version. With little to no direction. It would be thousands of hours long.
I read it a few weeks ago, it's a quick, easy read. The writer did a commendable job distilling Todd's thoughts onto paper, and it still feels like Todd's voice most of the time (you'll see a lot of phrases he uses). It was a really interesting read, there are stories he's told on his podcast, like the time he had a heart attack, and then a lot of stuff he's never really shared, like meeting his first long-term boyfriend and all the stuff they'd do to cover up that they were a couple.

"The Greatest Movie Ever Rolled." HOLY poo poo he is hilarious. CART!!!!!

edit...

so wow this thread is epic, i'm going through the "getting doug with high" from the start (i've seen a few but in random order), it's the Sarah Silverman and Todd Glass episode...

Todd Glass seems like the essence of neurotic but he's so neurotically self-aware at the same time it's brilliant, i'm guessing "getting high" exaggerates him, but his pure unedited neurotic emotion is blindingly bright. A joy to watch. And Sarah Silverman is so awesomely aware of the nuances of the back and forth banter between Doug and Todd it is the best episode so far, she plays with them like a master.

I'm getting Todds book too now. This thread is epic for good entertainment!

PFT alert on the latest Go Bayside!

I cannot believe he actually pointed out some goddamned elegant balloons, and that they both wondered where one could find such a thing.

Go Bayside is one solid podcast, I must say. The premise seems so thin and repetitive for non-obsessive SBTB fans*, but having listened to quite a few by now, it's delightful every time. I guess 'how little can a group of writers know or care about teenagers' is a bottomless well of entertainment.

*ie, couldn't describe any episodes aside from Jesse's pills and "I think they raced quads on the beach one time", and finds it completely unbearable to re-watch.

GraPar

Very few of the guests have much/any experience with SBTB so I wouldn't worry about it. It is a good podcast though - I highly recommend the Howard Kremer's episodes, because he gets totally obsessed with the director of the episodes Don Barnard and constructs this lazy, venal persona for him that's super loving funny.

Do they ever discuss the fact that even though the show is about teens, the subject of sex is never really broached? I mean there's some obvious reasons why (Saturday morning show, Censorship, time period, etc)

After giving chances to Reality Show Show and U Talkin' U2 to Me? despite being wholly unfamiliar with what the shows are nominally about, I'm no longer under the impression that the framing narrative of a podcast has any predictive value for how much I'll enjoy it.

Beeez
May 28, 2012
No, I agree with you there, but this seems so specific to me. Like, I can appreciate The Reality Show Show because I know what reality TV is like and how stupid the people on those shows are, I like U Talkin' U2 To Me? because it's 99 percent bullshitting exclusively about U2 and I was sort of interested in U2 anyway, but Saved by the Bell is such a specific thing. I guess I'll give it a shot though, even though there are few things about April Richardson I find strange.

Production
Jun 11, 2001
It's at least worth digging through for guests you like. With RSS/HH and UTU2TM you definitely have to like the hosts on their own because it's just them half the time, but as long as you don't have anything against April, I'd think people would like any episode with a good guest. PFT and Jimmy Pardo have fun with it, and even though I get the feeling I like him more than some people do, I think the Howard Kremer episodes are especially good.

Beeez
May 28, 2012
I do think she's funny from what limited experience I have of her, I didn't mean to make it seem like I dislike her or anything. This most recent episode appears to be almost 2 hours long so I'll probably steer clear of that one for now, but I might sift through the back catalog a bit.

So I will learn to live with it. Because I can live with it. I can live with it.

You need to have seen at least a few episodes of Saved By The Bell to really get what a weird shoddy show it was. If you don't really know what the show was like then it just comes off like any other shoddy teen sitcom.

Beeez
May 28, 2012
Well, I've seen a few episodes, and I'm familiar with some of the craziest stuff like the one where the woman from Showgirls gets addicted to drugs, I'm just saying it's not like I know all the little details of the "world" of that sitcom. Maybe someday someone will do a Boy Meets World version and I'll get every reference.

I love Go Bayside a lot. It's probably my favorite Tuesday podcast. If you are actively looking for new good podcasts and aren't giving it a try because of the Saved By The Bell thing, then you're being silly and missing out for no reason.
However, it's just as nonessential as any other comedy podcast, so if you're looking for another I highly recommend it, but if you aren't it's not that big a deal.

Speaking of WTR kinda, I really recommend The Dollop with Dave Anthony, ever since he rebooted it with Gary Reynolds to become a really dark This American Life it has been one of my favorite podcasts.

I'm definitely happy for Greg considering where he was 1 year ago. He doesn't seem super interested in this new venture but money is money and he can work on a new stand-up show while he's in NY.

Dave's story about driving across country in today's WTR was great, Greg was clearly laughing so hard he couldn't breathe and it was fantastic.

Nice try, asshole

I'm getting (mildly) sick of Dave Anthony, and I never thought I'd say that because I love WTR so much. But there are times when his laugh sounds incredibly forced, and the smugness in his voice can be off-putting, especially when he's talking about something he doesn't really know that much about.

I did really enjoy The Dollop after Gareth joined on, but then I lost interest once they switched to historical topics rather than contemporary ones.

Haven't listened to the new WTR yet, but I'm glad to hear it's just a break and not something more serious. The title scared me.
