So the latest facebook drama in the news is a mom getting in an uproar over facebook removing a photo of her toddler's naked rear end that she posted to the Coppertone fb page.

The headlines have all said that she was "recreating" the original Coppertone ad, but a comment by her in some articles mentions that she was looking through her photos later that day, saw the tan line, and thought of Coppertone. Other than the naked butt there's no similarities - another little girl is pulling her bikini bottom down, not a dog, and it's a crap photo (over cropped, bad angle).

As a photographer, my favorite quote from her is "It is hard being a photographer to change your privacy settings to FRIENDS ONLY so I have to be a PUBLIC person"

No, no it isn't. Not remotely.

(I read several articles to pick the one with the most info, and I feel the need to point out that every website posted the censored photo except for Fox, which went with the uncensored one).

They've both been having issues. AA's has been mostly recent, while UO is just a constant stream of poo poo. AA removed their CEO and kicked out most of the board, are having major financial issues, etc. WSJ has some good articles, just reading the titles of each one will give you a general idea.

As a European, can somebody please quickly explain what the Hobby Lobby is and what the hell is going on? From what little I gathered from this and the crazy political emails thread, it seems like the feds want companies to offer insurance for birth control to their employees or whatever, parallel to other health insurance? And the employers refuse this on religious grounds?

I have no idea how insurance works in the USA for that matter. Do employers have to offer insurance? Are they the only ones who have to? The only ones who can?
I'm so confused by the whole ordeal because to me it just seems so natural for health care to be subsidized by the government without really involving employers all that much.

Has it occurred to them that lots of poor people had better-paying jobs once and were made redundant, and they might've got their tattoos back then when they could afford them? Or that lots of poor people work full-time, but their bosses don't pay them a living wage, and that's the only reason they need income support from "our taxes"?

It's like the far-right commenters over here in the UK, they always say "if you can't afford to raise children, don't have them!", but they forget that if you had a baby back when you could afford to, and you later lose your job (often through no fault of your own), you still have to take care of the poor kid.

Here's what I've gathered from other SA threads not directly dealing with it, like politoons.

Hobby Lobby is a crafts store run by crazy Christian fundamentalists. They don't use barcodes because they're the mark of the beast.

They objected to a certain type of birth control on the grounds that it aborts babies rather than preventing fertilization. (Whether is actually does is another matter).

They objected to providing their employees health insurance that provided this form of birth control.

The case made it to the supreme court, where the judges rules 5-4 in favour of Hobby Lobby. Curiously, every female judge was in the 4, but those men knew better.

So now it's American law that your employer knows better than your doctor on your healthcare, and if it's religiously objectionable they can refuse to fund it.

In short, every time you see your local fascist party getting a small minority, just remember how much worse it could be.

Yeah this is what put me off the most about the whole ordeal. Since when can loving COMPANIES (things where you know, you work, make money, people are a part of it) have a religion? What? .... What? Wouldn't that be a church, if it's fundamentally built on top of a religion? Or is it just "well guys this quarter half the board is jewish so no one who works for us eats pork".

It's dumb as hell and it pisses me off, because here in Portugal we follow every capitalistic bullshit the USA ever does in hope that we'll somehow be better at it, especially with this stupid right wing government we have right now, and we'll eventually end up doing all the same stupid stuff you are. I just want a good country to follow, I wish we'd just copy/paste the Swedish/Danish laws and get on with it.

I haven't been following this too closely, but since Hobby Lobby is privately owned, what you're seeing isn't a corporation's beliefs - it's the owners' beliefs. The Supreme Court ruling applies to both privately and publicly held companies, but it's a whole lot more difficult to meet the court's religious standard when you are a public company without a history of certain practices. Wal-Mart and GM can't cherry pick their coverage. Chick-Fil-A might be able to.

The biggest issue I have with the whole Hobby Lobby ordeal is that those forms of birth control were covered until a few years ago when the ACA went in to effect. Then they were contacted by a lawyer about suing the government, which caused them to suddenly have an objection. Their company matched 401k plan invests in the company that makes Plan B and in the company that makes the 2 IUDs they suddenly object to. They also buy a lot of their inventory from China.

It's just a bunch of hypocrisy to get support from the religious right and to say "gently caress you Obama"

Did I go to some bootleg Korean Hobby Lobby by mistake, where lasers are permitted?

Or was I at Hoppy Lobby?

Maybe they used to have an anti-barcode policy at some point in the past, but I imagine inventory control at such a big store would be very difficult without them. Nearly everything in the store has a barcode already on it (except for weird stuff like big furniture and custom frames), even individual stems of fake flowers.

I agree it can be construed as a slippery slope, but it's also really tough to claim a religious exemption. It's not like company A can just say, "Christian Scientists don't agree with doctors so we don't either." You'd have to make your religious beliefs part of your corporate culture, which most businesses won't do because it limits your consumer appeal.

And even then, there are limits to what you can claim. Abortion is a controversial issue with religious implications. Preventive medicine, access to mammograms, and cancer treatment - not so much.

I hate having to defend Hobby Lobby because I've really disliked the store ever since I went in expecting Hobby Town. Their stores are weird, are full of cheap crap, and they have poo poo for art supplies. But they treat their employees well and they had a legitimate argument which they won.

I got dragged to one this last weekend and noticed the cashier wasn't using a barcode scanner. The thing is, he rang everything up pretty quickly. So whatever system they are using (last 3 digits of product code?) appears to be working.

It's certainly part of their corporate culture--there are signs on the entrance doors that say something to the effect of "We are closed on Sundays out of respect for our family's religious beliefs."

At any rate, I'm sure I'm not the only one whose Facebook feed is full of "SORRY OBAMA, PAYING TAXES IS AGAINST MY RELIGION! IT WORKED FOR HOBBY LOBBY!" poo poo that's driving me nuts. Most of these idiots have no idea what the gently caress "paying taxes" means. Are they referring to local property taxes, which make sure your kids can go to school and your water is safe to drink? State sales taxes, which pay to maintain the goddamn roads to the backwater dirt-hole you call a hometown? Federal income taxes?

Not only that, but the people I've worked with who were in the country on a questionably legal basis all had the proper paperwork filed, using an SSN which may or may not be theirs. I never asked, but I think it's safe to assume that anyone working here illegally with a fake ssn isn't going to be filing a tax return, meaning that not only are they paying income tax (and SSI etc), but they're literally paying more taxes than legal workers.

Yeah, but I'm going to make an educated guess that someone using a stolen SSN is taking a billion deductions and essentially paying no income tax. Which means the legal citizen whose identity is getting stolen is going to get a nasty surprise when the IRS sends them a bill for unpaid taxes.

So yeah, they are paying taxes without representation, but they aren't paying more taxes than a legal worker. Even when you add in their Social Security and FICA contributions.
