ijustam posted:Got my G1W today. Do all just use the suction cup mount? Hows it hold up over time? I've had poor luck with suction cups in the past, with them falling off and what not. My radar detector (Passport 8500 X50) falls off the windshield about once every month in the summer, more in the winter. When I used a standalone GPS it was generally about the same. The G1W so far has not fallen off once. Not really a hard number, but it's pretty good at staying put in my experience.

It's not like it's impossible to make a good suction cup mount. Whatever plastic iOttie uses for their suction cups is insane. I've had the one in my Ranger up there for probably about a year now and it's never fallen off on its own accord. It is discoloring the cup a bit (was clear, now it's starting to yellow a bit from the AZ sun) but it still holds on.

Is there any security-type mount that could make it extremely hard to remove a dash cam? I'm thinking of maybe attaching one to my roll bar when I have my convertible roof down to deter thieves, but that backfires if they steal the camera too.

Is the G1W the consensus cam? How does it compare to something like the Mini 0801?
|
# ? Jul 9, 2014 21:49 |

I don't think there is any consensus on the best cam. The mobius, mini 0801 and others are all really similar.

G1W is consensus cam as a surprisingly competent device at $50 and because most of us are cheapos. The Mobius ($80, right?) has gotten excellent reviews from goons and other people online, is smaller than the G1W, and the overheating issues that were initially mentioned at the dashcam site seem to be pretty nonexistent for most users. I haven't seen anything scathing written abut the mini 0801 but the market really opens up once you go over $100 and particularly between $200 and $300. Those models will start having features like GPS and better collision detection. As much as I love my G1W, I would definitely qualify it as a good choice for a bit of a lark getting some neat footage or exploring the possibilities of what dashcams can do, but if you have serious concerns regarding legal issues or something business related I would probably spend the extra money for a better product.

# ? Jul 10, 2014 04:08 |

I own a G1W. My recommendation is for a Mobius. For about $30 more, you get a much lower profile camera with more accessories and support available (different mounts, capacitor pack meant to replace the battery specifically for dashcam use, more reliability, equal or better video quality, consistent firmware updates, a third party Android app that allows you to adjust settings on the Mobius via USB (if your phone is compatible, there is another app that can check that)), among other things. If you don't want to spend $80 for the Mobius, you can always get the $50 G1W. But honestly if you are planning to use a dashcam for a long time, there is almost no excuse to get a G1W over a Mobius.

The only thing I question about the Mobius is the small viewing angle. In the under $100 range, I'm currently thinking the B40/A118. Everything seems reasonable, unless there's some huge negative I'm missing? http://dashcamtalk.com/b40-a118

You can buy a wide angle lens for the Moebius. Some sellers offer it pre-installed.
|
# ? Jul 10, 2014 12:17 |

Its worth checking the size of the cameras and where you want to put it - a mobius won't fit between the rear-view mirror and windscreen in my car but a mini 0801 fits nicely. Its also not just the size of the camera, many have quite bulky mounts. Again, the mini 0801 suited me as the mount is mostly built in so fits easily.

FogHelmut posted:The only thing I question about the Mobius is the small viewing angle. Viewing angle is something of a compromise - the wider it is, the more you get in, but the downside is that the interesting area in front of you is smaller. So, if you think you're going to get T-boned, wider is better. If you think you're going witness bad driving directly in front of you, narrow gives you a clearer picture and makes plates easier to read.

Potential dashcam win story. I got a g1w for my birthday back in March. Most my family thought it was weird. Well two days ago I was leading a two car convoy up to International Falls, MN. The other vehicle in the convoy, traveling directly behind my car, was involved in an incident where a car in the left lane struck it on the rear driver's side. We were traveling in the right lane when it happened and had passed the car that caused the wreck about two minutes prior via the left lane. Anyway, this car struck our second car fairly lightly, over corrected, flying all over the highway back and forth until finally getting it under control and parked it on the shoulder. I saw some of this happen in my rearview and you can hear me exclaim when it happened on the video. I called the second car in our convoy and asked if they were alright, because I saw this other car flipping all over the road behind them (not knowing our second car had actually been struck). The second convoy car said they were fine and didn't know what happened or why that car went all wacky. So we continued on. Two and a half hours later we stopped for fuel and found the damage to the second car. Queue the dashcam footage. We pulled it up, found the moment it happened, rewound a bit further, found the plates of the car that caused it, found the mile marker for the location it happened, found the car that caused it was driving erratically prior to the wreck. Gave all this info to the highway patrol (including the footage), they found the car, found matching damage, found the other individual never reported the incident and cited them for failure to report. While our second car didn't know they had been hit, the other car certainly should have known, as they stopped after the incident. Anyway, looks like I'm going to add a second camera to the car, this one rear-facing. If I had one this case would have been a slam dunk. The state patrol was really quite amazed at how good this little camera was though, and the amount of information we were able to pull from the video despite not actually capturing the collision itself.

Is there any chance the first post can be updated with the current cams to buy or whatever? Pretty dull here but I travel pretty often. I've seen things. So many things. I really want to share them, and in a few cases upload them to the Police's service for this kind of thing. Anyway, for people looking at the A118/B40, I've made a sample video of it out my back window. Right now it's only set to 720P, because the memory card in it is only half the size as the one in my front cam, and I like to think that I should have roughly the same time of footage available. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aacVM0nwiDc Kazy fucked around with this message at 18:02 on Jul 18, 2014 |
