So, I'm itching to play a good driving game. There are a ton of options out there, and it's frankly overwhelming. Maybe someone can give me a suggestion. Here is what I'm looking for:

I have a Fanatec Porsche Carrera wheel that I bought for GT5 that I want to use (shut up, it was what I could afford at the time ).
I don't have a ton of time for video games and I don't like to spend too much time on any one thing (I will probably play for a couple of weeks, then not go back for months), so MMO-style subscription fees are no bueno.
I don't want to spend a fortune - I will probably get 100 hours at most out of a game I really like. If it costs more than a typical AAA game for everything I need to have fun, it's not worth it to me.
I want to race online with goons, and generally chill out.
I'm a horrible driver (as far as driving fast goes), and I want to get better at it. Realistic physics are good, :smug: communities are not.
I don't mind DLC if the base game is cheap, but having 90% of the content behind a paywall really puts me off.
I'm kind of all over the place, so one day I may want to race on an oval and the next I may want to do a rally course.

Help me out Goons, what should I play?

To be honest it sounds like you would have the most fun with something like forza 4 on the xbox 360 or gran turismo 6 on ps3. They are easy to pick up and put back down. Your wheel works with either console, there is a large variety in each game, a huuuuge amount of cars and the physics are realistic enough that you'll be challenged if you've never really gotten into sim-racing.

PC sim racing can be really frustrating at first because the cars are genuinely hard to drive (and arguably harder than those same cars would be to drive in real life because sim nerds have this attitude that difficult=realistic)

If you're anything like me the forza/gt games will get you interested in something a bit more serious later and then when you try the serious PC sims they won't seem as frustrating and you'll know a lot of the tracks like the back of your hand from your time playing the console games.

I do wish there were more "normal" cars in these sims though. I want to take a non-race trimmed gt86 or rx8 or 240sx out on old spa with realistic physics but I'm probably in the minority there. Spec miata in rfactor 2 is pretty good for that but it's pretty much the only "slow" car I can find.

I spent a lot of time on GT5 (a few hundred hours, at least). I'm really looking for something more realistic (physics-wise) that I can play on the PC. I don't mind a steep learning curve (I play Dwarf Fortress :black101:), I just know I probably won't put enough time into it to justify spending a lot, since I don't have as much time to game as I used to.

In that case rfactor2 is great and assetto corsa is great and beautiful.

After playing RF2 and AC for awhile, I kind of differ them between using Linux and Windows. AC is easier to get into and is more intuitive and user-friendly (and will most likely be even more so on release), works well, and is definitely good enough for the vast majority of people. RF2 requires a lot more tweaking under the hood, the interface is clunky and confusing, and the graphical settings are more finicky. Once you get everything set up to your liking though, it can't be beat. I definitely like AC and all, but I keep coming back to RF2 in the end.

Aren't they around the same price? RF2 is double if you buy the lifetime license, but the yearly one comes out to like $40, same as AC.

Unless I read it wrong, AC comes with a "lifetime" license for $40. I specifically wanted to avoid paying MMO-style fees.

Amen, I use the E30 S1 most in AC and can hardly wait for the Miata mod to be released (street, not spec).

You might want to look at the original rFactor since it is pretty cheap ($27 through the official site), has no licence or subscription type nonsense, still has a very active online presence, and there's a staggeringly vast range of tracks and mods available.

My gut feeling is that AC will be the next-gen title to go for but it will be a while yet before there are enough of the gold standard mods up and running to tempt the core simracing player base over.

Game stock car is another game worth a look, it has karts, some really fun open wheel cars and also has a bunch of modded content (seeing its basically rfactor its not too hard to get rfactor mods working, there is a fair few here http://m3challenge.webs.com/stockcar.html).

I haven't played it much since AC came out but have certainly played it more than rfactor 2.

Not really. The thing with Forza and Gran Turismo is that they are made by the only two studio's with the man power and resources to have gigantic car lists and a lot of features such as deep and complex car upgrading. The other game developers, especially the PC ones have to be pretty selective in the cars they add and rarely ever add upgrade features to their games, just a real good tuning feature.

That said, take a look at Shift 2 but it honestly isn't that good.

I'm with you on this one, sorta. I want the best simulation I can get as far as real tracks and driving dynamics go, but I want the vehicles to be "interesting" by which I mean more than just the top X performance cars from Y brands. I want slow but fun cars like the 86. I want fast cars that no one expects to be fast like the SHO, Syclone, Lightning, etc. I want stupid options like the Raptor, Hummer, Transit, etc. I want the ability to do insane things like the LS7 Aveo you could build in Forza 3 (which for some reason was removed in Forza 4, even though its literally a line in a SQLite database and takes up basically no space to make available) and then have a great physics engine accurately simulate me boiling the tires off it and slamming in to a wall at a million miles per hour. Crazy "unlimited performance" stuff like GT's Red Bull cars would also be cool.

Basically if it's a real thing I want it to be as real as possible, but that doesn't mean everything needs to be real things.

For some reason though the racing game world is content to work in two different silos, where stupid fun and realistic simulation of said stupidity rarely cross.

The answer is probably iracing but,
Are there good nascar Sims out there that are more recent than 11 years ago?
I love iracing but having a family makes getting to scheduled races without a pause button for 45 min a rough go. Plus there's the price, I'd like to let my subscription lapse and try an offline sim but I have a feeling that iracing is the best

Hi dudes, I've been playing some Race 07 with a Touring car mod and I enjoy it, but the dated feel is getting to me.

I enjoyed Rfactor but hated how mods had variable AI and inconsistent....everything. Do goons recommend Assestto Corsa?

I know I can read up on it, but is A.C aimed to be mod friendly like Rfactor (and I assume RF2?). If A.C is the 'ARMA' of Sim Racing at the minute let me know and i'll pick it up.

I play with a controller and I love old shitters, touring cars (Especially British super touring!), not so much high end stuff like sports cars, open wheel. From what I can gather A.C is the most accessible out of the two [RF2].

Well both sims are in a pre-release state so I wouldn't expect much. There's more modified content for rfactor2, but AC has a better presentation and a more forgiving (while remaining realistic) driving model. Personally I have both.

I'm glad you like it! It is one of the few tracks I that I wanted that I couldn't find for rf2.

I'm going to convert autumn ring and trial mountain (gran turismo tracks available for rf1) next probably.

It took about an hour, after I got the steps down. I changed the road surface to RealRoad (the dynamic track evolution thing) and I changed some textures (the grass and the gravel trap) because the ones in the original were really lovely but for some reason the gravel is yellow and I can't figure out how to change it, the texture isn't yellow. Also I'm not satisfied with the overall lighting, everything looks a little too bright. Also I don't know enough about the sim engine to know if the AI is any good.

As for downloads racedepartment is great for rf2 but they don't have anything for rf1. Rfactorcentral has a lot but after 3 downloads (not per day but total!) you have to pay. Does anyone know a better place to get rf1 tracks?

My pedals are acting up, but they didn't release any smoke :( that sucks, man.

My CSR pedals aren't showing full pedal travel for the accelerator. With the pedal floored, it is only showing about 80% travel on my computer. The other pedals work fine, and it reads fine when the pedal is fully released. The first time I press the gas it works about normal, but once I ease into it the travel doesn't work right anymore. I haven't dug into it too much yet, just recalibrated rF2 to the new "max", but iRacing has to be recalibrated every single time I log in.

I don't know if it just needs a good cleaning, or if a board is going bad, or what. My firmware is current, as are my drivers. Once I finally get a chance to tear into it, we'll see what happens.

Hey did I sell you my extra set of clubsport pedals when Fanatec unintentionally sent me two?

Im looking at my pedals, That stupid screw is the black one on the underside of the pedals? I dont think that bolt in the black sensor mount block is supposed to rotate. The black sensor block is supposed to rotate around the bolt. Lube will help with this. Try lubing that bolt, Ive been using the aerosol breakfree CLP on mine.

You may have scratched the bolt with the screw, try pulling the bolt out rotating it, and putting it in backwards. This should put the contact point of the screw on the bolt in an unscratched position.

I havent had that problem with my pedals yet, so this is all wild speculation. You must have more miles on yours.

Edit: rereading your post, rotating it might not do anything. Try lube and tighting the screw

E: ISCI, how resource-intensive is the game?
