Justice ain't gonna dispense itself.
It also gets a -10 aim penalty. As compensation it gives the HEAT perk for free, but yea I don't find it very useful except on terror missions where you're bound to be fighting a cyberdisc or two with some mechtoids thrown in for flavor. Just use the Alloy Rifle.

So when do we get a mod that keeps a kill tally chalked on the side of shivs to scare the hell out of enemies when they see it roll out the skyranger :colbert:

It is the Gauss Sniper Rifle that gets the -10 aim penalty, not the Autorifle. Autorifle is the SAW.

I love the Gauss Sniper with Lock N Load and Snapshot. It is the perfect anti-Cyberdisc weapon since you can crit with it before the Cyberdisc closes up. Rockets won't crit.

Yeah, someone mentioned it already, but far more than vanilla, falling back is a really valid strategy in Long War. In Vanilla I always ended up just fighting aliens wherever I first encountered them. The battle would always take place wherever they were revealed, usually with them on the cover they first bolted to when spotted. But in Long War, more and more I found that falling back to safer (and ideally, more diverse) positions could not only help lure out enemies into more vulnerable locations and entrench your own troops, but also enable clever tactics and moves that could encourage flanking. If you'd just stood there and took cover while exchanging shots, you'd be destroyed. Retreat is much more strategic now.

I haven't played X-COM in about fifteen years, but after reading JadeStar's LP I really want to give it a try. How likely is it that there's a Steam sale on EW anytime soon? Also, about how many missions do you end up going on in a play through? I don't have a lot of time, but I might be able to get about one to two missions per day.

Yeah, some basic stuff is easily editable, like exp gains, build costs, the amount of money you get from countries, the amount of panic that's induced by certain enemy actions, etc. It works just like the base game, but I'm not really sure what edits are done by hex/exe edit. Look for the stuff that's in this wiki: http://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/DefaultGameCore.ini_settings_-_XCOM:EU_2012

After quadruple-checking that I've got the proper versions of the mod and the game, all the right files in the right places (or deleted where needed), multiple reinstalls, and so on, I still cannot get Long War to actually work at all. Instant CTDs regardless of any effort on my part. It's a bummer, especially since any advice from various LW-related forums falls flat as well.

I am well aware that it's "supposed" to crash the first time due to Steam being unable to handle the file load or whatever the creators said it was. I can't get past that initial crash 20 times later, though, which is the issue!

Very end of July, I just had an Abduction mission where I spent about ten minutes on the deployment screen mulling over the perfect combination of people to send - considering not only the ability of the squad to handle the double-Cyberdisc pods I'm seeing on all medium UFOs, but how to make sure I still have two extra A+ squads for missions in the near future so I don't have to dip into fatigued ones.

The pods in the mission were, in order of appearance, two Thin Men, three Sectoids, three Floaters. Of course.

I finally got it working and I did so much to try and fix it at once that I'm not sure what actually worked.

After a fresh install, I:
-deleted all saved games and config files, as instructed
-deleted certain uncompressed resource files, as instructed
-made sure there were no loose files anywhere else, like various other configs or settings or whatever, even for Steam
-made double-super-ultra sure I had the latest version of the mod itself
-installed as normal but made super triple mega sure it worked properly ("are you sure you want to overwrite blahblah")
-disabled the Steam overlay (I was able to re-enable it afterwards no sweat so this is definitely not a problem)

ALLLLL of that I have tried a zillion times before, but for whatever reason, this time it worked. I feel a little dumb now because I got it to work basically immediately after making my other two posts.

Early game they're a riskier Overwatch counter that is much easier to employ than Flashbangs/Suppression. Mid-to-late they're high speed flankers which end up with In The Zone and a vast array of weapon choices. And don't forget Battle Scanner!

Think of them like a lighter, more elegant version of an Assault. Where an Assault charges in with Run 'n Gun and Close Combat Specialist shotgun fire all around, the Scout picks from a variety of weapon options (they can pack a Marksman Rifle and Sawn-off on the same loadout), moves at high speed in single half moves (Sprinter and high mobility), and dices up on the flanks with ITZ.

Early game I take one on every mission for emergency Overwatch breaking, I just pack Ceramic (and later Alloy Plating) on them because I know they're going to get hit by that Overwatch eventually. If you don't mind losing the mobility, put Tac Armor on them too. I generally have ones equipped like Tac Vest/SMG/Sawn-Off/Ceramic(Alloy)/Flashbang for gotta go fast speeds with lethal close range power.

Russia is probably your first out. LW automatically forces one of the countries to spontaneously leave, apparently, near the start of the game. Sure makes getting completion bonuses rough.

I'm running through the above right now - including the extra step of first literally binning my entire XCom directory and redownloading it all clean. Other than in the game directory itself, can you get any more specific on the other files you hunted down, specifically these:

Whenever you uninstall, there are typically files left in the Steam directory for whatever reason. It's usually junk like configs or other player-specific data vs. the game itself.

Documents -> My games -> X-Com: Enemy Within has a bunch of save and config stuff as well. It's safe to just delete it if you aren't interested in playing the non-Long War saves again.

Steam directory for X-Com -> XEW (Enemy Within's specific folder) -> XComGame folder -> CookedPCConsole -> see if there are files named XComGame.upk.uncompressed_size and XComStrategyGame.upk.uncompressed_size and delete them. They might not be there at all so yeah.

For LW Impossible/Ironman should I do Double Tap or ITZ for a sniper? In Vanilla I always took ITZ, but I'm not sure in LW. XP Hogs are actually an issue due to fatigue and covers are alot harder to break in LW. Also, I'm running with Red Fog on so shoots two aliens down to below half hp influences their aim and might be a safer choice than ITZ.

Is there a guide or a list of what foundry upgrades do in LW? I'm around June in I/I in LW and this is actually my first run this deep (I'm an idiot so I'm playing I/I). I've gotten my Advanced beam weapons and I'm sorta stomped on what to start upgrading next in the foundry/labs.

Don't play Ironman on LW, first. It is a beta and there are bugs, some (potentially) gamebreaking. I don't know of any right now, but that doesn't mean they're not there. Just don't save-scum.

If you're in June, you're going to have a long, long time to wait until you're getting a MSGT sniper, so you'll be able to pick yourself, but I personally take Double-Tap on my snipers. I have other people around for ITZ use.

Does LW, or vanilla-maybe I forgot-, have anything to stop you capturing Outsiders early? I'd been having bad luck capturing them so I started save-scumming on one mission (I was already scumming that mission because the Outsider spawn point decided to appear on the roof of the ship, so I had to run about in odd places to activate it without giving it a free flank shot), but I just kept failing with a 55% chance. Obviously it's not impossible to fail multiple 55% chances, and I was playing the turn in different orders each time to not be using the same seed, but it's unlikely.

LW has an amazing abillity to troll you. I'm in the cyberdisc phase too, though I'm seeing only one at this point. I'm really careful when making squads now, and bring good stuff to anything that isn't a light abduction. Though, I've also seen a moderate abduction with only low class aliens, so it's kinda hard to follow that gauge.

I just splashed a small fighter, and thought that it'll be a good chance to train a few low classes and a rookie or two.

This is the start of turn two :v:

Yep, I triggered six floaters on my first move, and then turtled while cursing about it. Granted, this situation wasn't too hard, but I still felt trolled by the game.

I really don't like that terror missions in LW are basically a loss either way right now. Like, you can only slightly reduce the panic, and that's it. Even if you do well, it's still a loss overall.

You can at least get back lost countries, according to what I read. Like, you can make more skeleton keys and then assault an alien base in those countries to win them back. I hope this works for all countries you lose, and not only for the random one that's scripted to defect in the beginning. Of course my surrender country was Canada, which led me to not care about North America that much. Well, it's also red now and will defect soon. Mexico is still doing fine though :v:

I don't think so. I grabbed an outsider as soon as my arc and containment were up. The shard has been sitting in my lab for months now. Sometimes even scumming won't make that 55% happen.

I'd also like to register a complaint with the producer of the arc thrower. It is advertised as hitting at least half of the time but seems to work a lot less often. This is especially problematic since I need 5 plasma carbines (and carbines specifically!) to research plasma weapons. Turns out I've been too diligent in capturing Mutons for their rifles, and now I usually one-shot floaters and Thin men.

No, the initial supply ship landing is an intended event thats supposed to demonstrate that not every mission is winnable in Long War. It almost always happens in the first month of the game, and if you beat it (probably through save scumming, its how I did it the first time!) you're set on goods for a long, long time. I found it actually made the early game a bit too easy, so I was kind of glad when the supply ship just didnt show up in my B10/B13 game so I didn't have to resist the urge. You'll get your first defection soon. Pray it isn't in Asia.
