Sure, but the hints of this are kinda scrappy and - again - inconsistent. The story is at odds with itself, and I don't feel that Carbine's writers are skilled enough that the ambiguity and contradictions are deliberate parts of the narrative.

Look at it this way, are you going to take someone's word that they slew the Lich King or Stormtalon or are you going to ask them to pick up feces for you first and THEN believe them?

Now, which of those is more amusing?

I didn't mean to spawn another "Dominion is weirdly written" discussion, my main point in bringing this up is that it sounds like a whole other vanilla-WOW Alliance/Horde deal, where the Alliance zones/story seemed to be made first, with the horde ones being made after as a seeming afterthought.

Sounds like it seems that way with Exile/Dominion too? I know they were trying to mirror vanillia WOW in many ways, but drat if that was their goal they did a good job!

To be honest they should have just done away with factions-- world PVP is stupid, and battlegrounds don't mean poo poo for factions, it is just one team against another, regardless of who is on the teams. They should have just let you toggle pvp on for yourself for world PVP (you against anyone else who wants to have it on) and then Warplots and battlegrounds are just random team versus random team.

Might be a controversial opinion, but I agree. They probably could have made world PVP work somehow even without two factions.

Of course, this system was most likely part of their vision from day 1, and asking for anything significantly different would be like asking for a different game entirely. Oh well.

If you think about it from an implementation perspective, it's easier to have factions and then remove than to not have factions then add them.

This game's setting would have been perfect for no-factions gameplay-- you are a colonist/merc who makes your way to Nexus and while there you get to ally yourself with various NPC factions that you can raise your rep towards. The Dominion, Exiles, Protostar, etc.

Plus you could group with anyone and do any zones' storyline-- especially if some zones stories were poorly written or horribly boring. This would have saved them the tired feeling of having multiple zones filter down into one zone for all races per faction, which saves them on having to make zones but already is behind what WOW did. I believe in Vanillia WOW there were still like 2x zones to level in per level group, you could pick one or the other-- it's just most did the easier/more quest dense one of the two leveling paths (Strangethorne Vale versus Desolace/Feralas) but still the option was nice.

But then again it looks like their main goal was to do a fresh take on a lot of WOW's tired core gameplay mechanics without changing the tired and old part of them.

They were probably trying to resurrect that us vs. them enmity that existed between Horde and Alliance back in olden WoW times. I guess those are good intentions, but I think it's an impossible goal to achieve in a modern themepark MMO. Besides the fact that players and their attitudes have evolved considerably since 2007, the (practically necessary) quality of life features like cross-server BGs undermine the sense of community that's needed to replicate those bygone days.

Pretty much this. The us-versus-them worked well but got tiresome and gameplay-wise hurt the game due to the fact that no one could queue for battlegrounds when like 80% of the game played one faction (alliance). So they did cross-server stuff to eliviate this, but in doing so made the whole faction stuff pretty obsolete. I understand their age old desire to have 'recognizable silhouettes' or some crap they always bring up, but the is something that matters in a FPS game where someone can kill you in a second like TF2, not in WOW. Oh yeah and they did away with that anyhow with the Pandaria race cop-out, since they finally admitted people just look at the red text above their names anyhow.

Red text above names that Wildstar doesn't even have by default. Heh.

Edit - I hate to sound like I am bitching a lot, I really am enjoying this game for the most part. I just wish it was better, as the setting/story/art are fantastic especially after 15 years of the same tired copies of high-fantasy MMOs. And the basic combat gameplay alone makes me wonder how dull going back to WOW might feel when that new expansion drops and everyone will be doing exactly that for a while.

See, and in most mmo you do the same poo poo all the time no matter what with maybe one quest chain at the end that is supposed to give an :airquote:epic:airquote: feeling to the player.

Say I'm level 5 or something. Yeah ok I'm some little piece of poo poo and maybe I need to pick through poop for money. Maybe not in wildstar where you're like beamed out of an infinite core of cryostasis people for being a huge badass, but it could be ok if you had an mmo where you start as a nobody in a small town or something. I'm all for making players feel powerful, but power is relative, and if I'm already being lauded as an amazing specimen from level 1, then don't make do poo poo like that. Thematically, it is bullshit, moreso because there are a lot of quests where you actually are doing stuff that is seemingly important (eg picking through eldan ruins, helping settlers get a foot in the door against wildlife/exiles). Why am I needed to attatch radio collars to deer?

And why, ITYOOL 2014 do we still have escort quests, let alone an entire zone that is an escort quest

I'm a little sad about my dungeon progress. I was expecting to be attuned by now but I haven't managed to get silver in even one dungeon yet. Admittedly I play on an RP server and I came here with just one person I know and I immediately started looking around for people who want to get attuned. We've had some luck and my tank gear is pretty good by now but no matter who I try to swap in for a silver run we always have one person who consistently fucks up and we end up wiping a lot.

I'm thinking about moving to another server since Lightspire (EU) is pretty dead and the Dominion side is pretty much unpopulated at this point, it's a sad state of affairs :(

I have to imagine that the way to level fastest is PVP with a premade, if queues are popping. 5-0 Walatiki wins go by real fast.

It's INCREDIBLY repetative though. PvP is such an afterthought in Wildstar that I don't think I'm going to bother playing any more - I don't want to raid and I'm not sure what I'd do at level 50 without some decent PvP.

It's nice that they're adding another battleground but seriously 3 of them is pretty poo poo. I think I'd find it okay if this was DAoC and battlegrounds were a new concept that they still needed to get their head around but as it is there's plenty of different templates, locations and goals to throw in there that they just haven't bothered to do.

PvP also feels oddly slow and disconnected. I just can't put my finger on it. There's threads on the offical forums and on reddit about the same sort of thing too. People seem to take a bloody LONG time to die and that sort of stuff makes me feel like I'm not making a difference at all.

I guess it's just another one of the strange quality of life things Wildstar has left out. While yes other battlegrounds would just be doing the stuff you're doing in the existing battlegrounds it's still nice to have a bit of variety.

The thing is, the game is built around the disconnected "new MMOG" sort of thing with queueing systems for battlegrounds/dungeons/adventures and whatever, but the actual DESIGN of the game totally discourages the use of any of these things.

Sometimes I haven't got time to make a premade, or else I'm too low level (I am too low level) and I'd be fine if the game just straight up went for "You cannot do these things in pick up groups" but it doesn't.

It's like it's taunting you. I'd say like 60% of the posts on the offical forums are because of this disconnect.
