I only had regular sized 'lids on my Newfoundland mission, which is a shame. Giant Chrysalids chasing me to the Skyranger would have made the airstrike much more satisfying.

While I really like LW, the guaranteed panic gain from terror missions is pretty annoying. Just had a flawless mission with no civilians dead and yet still got hit with it.

I'm actually trying one more time with a previous save because gently caress it how am I going to take on a large ufo? Turns out I've been doing pretty well but ran into a strange glitch.

That outsider? It was one of the super ones. It almost killed my machine gunner and mortally wounded my sniper, then I lost sight of it for a turn and its dead. Was at full health and everything.

I'mma load my save before I sent the skyranger and just ignore it because knowing about those first 3 spawns kind of makes me feel scummy. :v:

I threw a battle scanner that landed directly on one of the green goo coated bodies that litter some maps. Immediately all its limbs shot up and started flailing about like

Was rather disturbing.

On a side note, I don't have Enemy Within, but am planning on picking it up soon. Should I play though EW vanilla first, or just jump into Long War?

I'd say unmodded Enemy Within is still worth a playthrough, if only to familiarize yourself with concepts like Meld, Gene mods, MECs, Exalt and all the new additional items before Long War expands that even further.

Yeah, but my Rocketeer should never be in a position where he's in danger at all thanks to Javelin Rockets.

Nice new feature coming in the next update:

quote:

- Added two new options to Interface Options Screen: 1) Default Zoom Level Slider, lets you adjust default zoom level from between 50% and 200% of normal, and 2) A checkbox that lets you activate an alternate set of camera controls, where you can click the middle mouse button to directly control camera yaw and pitch

That'll go a long way to making it feel more like a native PC game. A slightly more zoomed out camera by default, plus being able to freely whip the camera around with the mouse. It's the little things that matter.

I guess I just really like the option to rotate the camera with the mouse now. It always seemed weird that I could zoom in and out with the mousewheel, but holding it had the exact same effect.

What paywall? There's an optional subscription for faster downloads, but I don't think anyone uses that.

Someone once told me, "Time is a flat circle".
Picked up both the vanilla game and Enemy Within during the recent Steam sale, and after getting shut down a few time on Classic Ironman, I'm wondering if I should just skip trying to beat Enemy Unknown and just go ahead with Enemy Within. Does EW totally replace EU or are they worth playing separately?

I will say that I do miss the customizability of the soldiers from the original 1993 game. Don't like having abilities shoehorned into four pre-set classes.

EW is a content-addition, not a new game. Same first mission, same final mission, just some new enemies and a bunch of new gadgets that flesh out the game.

You might enjoy just diving into Long War - it starts you off with a higher squad count, two item slots, removes most gun limitations and allows you to choose your soldier classes from two subtypes of one of four archetypes, or randomly choose a third option.

You might as well play EW from the start, it's an enhancement to the base game.

And I think it's worthwhile playing it unmodded first. For one, the base game is much more stable.

I really wouldn't say that at this point - LW isn't the crashfest right now that it was a few weeks ago, and is actually fixing many vanilla bugs.

I can't really think of any vanilla bugs? Teleporting pods used to be a thing but I don't remember it happening in any of my EW campaigns.

I recommend playing the vanilla game because it isn't going through a version a week (exaggeration I know), it's nice to know what exactly is being changed by a big overhaul mod, and the vanilla game is still quite good.

And not so Long.

Not many stability issues but weird rear end things like .. You know those aim consumables that make your fighter automatically hit the next two shots? Yeah, those have literally never actually worked. All they did was make the visual show a hit on the next two shots.

Range bonuses for weapons can bring the final to over 100. You just aren't likely to see it given how rarely you have aliens overwatch near you, but it becomes noticeable with high alien accuracy or interactions like a mindcontrolled Close Combat Specialist shooting at a Lightning Reflexes walking by.

I actually had to set it down again because of how many crashes I was getting, particularly when certain voice clips played (turning soldier dialog off helped this a little) or during UFO intercepts. :(

In long war, what is the difference in plasma and pulse weapons?

Tender Bender
Sep 17, 2004

Does Long War allow for a modular installation? The changes to the tactical game sound cool (larger squads, more classes, tougher enemies, an actual difficulty curve), but the changes to make the strategic layer take forever sounds unappealing.

No, it's an all-or-nothing deal, but there's a ton of customization options in the Second Wave menu, including a (still relatively unbalanced - they're still trying to get the campaign working nicely at the intended length) Not So Long War mode, which tries to condense all the Long War content (and there's a TON of new stuff) down into a campaign of roughly vanilla length.

Plasma is +1 damage over Pulse, double cost in cash and resources and requires a base alien weapon to build off of (1 Alien Rifle = 1 Plasma Rifle). Pulse generally has +10 higher crit chance though.

The way aliens who get fatally shot kinda duck for a moment before ragdollng, some classes oddly slow overwatch shots, and the really loving annoying repeating VOs all bug me more and more as I play longer.

I really hope there's another expansion coming that also fixes the old annoyances and adds some QoL UI stuff while they are at it.

I think it was introduced in EW, but I'm not sure. Sadly, it only applies to the sound files they made for regional releases, so there's no separate British dialect since they just used the same English release over there.

In EW it's just an option in your settings menu. It's totally worth it though - it definitely gives your squad more character. My robo-Russian close combat MEC won my heart every time he spoke, even though I didn't understand a word. While my Frenchy Assault Colonel was my fave and I can understand enough French to get by.

EW should let you change it in the customization screen, although note that it's just the languages it was localized in, so no British English or Asian languages.
