I'm a pretty big fan of Yes Bear. They're some local guys from Vancouver, BC. The music is fiddly and mathy at times, some nice heavier parts, and it never gets too far up its own rear end. They try to keep their stuff pretty positive and fun, which I dig.

Also, The Armed might fit in here. They're from Detroit and they're pretty loving rad. Sort of DEP with a bit more of a rock tinge to it, I guess. More of the rock influence in the first album and then it gets kind more chaotic from there. You can download all their stuff in MP3 or FLAC for free at their website.

I'm absolutely gutted I missed them in the UK a couple of years ago, it'll probably be a while until they come anywhere near again. On a semi-unrelated note are any other UK goons heading to ArcTanGent festival this weekend? It's the same chilled people as the guys who run 2000trees and the lineup this year, its first year, is pretty insane. 65dos, ASIWYFA, TTNG, Yndi Halda, Rolo Tomassi, Johnny Foreigner, Brontide among others, it's pretty much the festival of my dreams.

I'm bummed to be in USA and nowhere near that ArcTanGent festival. A math rock festival is the most amazing idea ever. I have seen Sargent House tweeting a lot about putting on a festival next year, though, so there's hope. Has anybody seen TTNG with the new singer? I saw them on their last US tour with Stu before he left the band and it was pretty solid, I feel like they'd be even better now.

I'm not as much of a fan of him as I was of Stu, though I thought he was fine when I saw him at a small venue. He was pretty disappointing on the main stage at 2000trees though this year, having problems with hitting some of the notes in the earlier songs and just general issues with his voice which was a little worrying.

Well thanks to this thread, I picked up Lye By Mistake's Fea Jur and it's all sorts of awesome. Love the mix of jazzy, proggy noodling goodness. Always been in two minds about math stuff, some of it just seems to go amiss for me. I think it's the stuff that has a more "indie" vibe or the more tough-guy hardcore thing that seems to lack that spark I want. Yet of course stuff like Lye By Mistake are just the sort of thing I want more of. Probably due to being a dirty metalhead and not really getting a good exposure to the right sort of bands. I'll take it as a sign to go back through the thread and see what other good stuff is out there waiting for me.

Exivious has ex-Cynic members and I haven't heard of them before? I must be slacking! You're spot on there Optimum Gulps, certainly my sort of thing, thanks for that. Shall have to put them high on my "CDs to order list". That's a pretty big playlist. I will say I rather dig Sithu Aye, they're a bit djent-y but not overly so and lots of nice riffs. Not bad at all for something I found free on Bandcamp. Plus as a physics nerd, I dig the space theme. Even if it just track titles, still cool.

I find that a lot of "mathy" bands have a tough time getting the right balance between rhythmic complexity and interesting melodies, but this band has no trouble staying in the sweet spot all the way through.

I think you guys should check out this band from Plymouth called Emma Ate the Lion. bandcamp (free until christmas!!) Had them on my radio show last month and they killed it. They aren't strictly math rock but definitely have got intelligent composition and quite mathy sections. I'll try to get my hands on the recording from my show and post it here, I think it came out really good! The music was great, but they didn't interact with the crowd at all, they just got on, played their songs, and left. There was a really cool extended version of glenn where they just jammed out to the guitar line for like 10 minutes, and they did some creative stuff with feedback that's not in the studio versions. It's definitely worth seeing but nothing crazy.

The Magic Stick and The Grog Shop seem like really small places for Minus the Bear. They sold out the Grog Shop with Cursive(?) pretty quickly, and when they co-headlined with Circa Survive in Michigan they played Royal Oak Music Theater, which is a legit music hall.
