Thinking about jumping ship and getting this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lx.launcher8. Even though the tile padding is messed up, and I am not sure if there's live tiles for music and the photos app, it just seems like a better idea if I decided to switch. Also, not sure if the keyboard is wp8 styled or android (gross) or if the live tiles support non-english phone languages Stay Safe fucked around with this message at 17:48 on Jul 19, 2014 |

So a quick update: 1. Making more progress on awful music. It's starting to become somewhat useable! 2. I actually started making updates to Awful forums viewer again. So expect some nice stuff soon on that. 3. The 1020 is nice, but the 1520 feels higher quality to me. That being said, the camera is a bit better. I also took the 520 out for a little bit. I don't know how anyone deals with it. It's not "bad", but there are so many better phones for not much more money. Dealing with the performance issues is a pain, but hopefully it will make my app better for all phones.

"Not much more money" is relative, to be blunt about it, and what a middle class developer in Seattle and a middle class factory worker in, say, Vietnam, can afford are very different.

Also for some reason it seems to download "unread thread counts" for my bookmarks much faster. Also: when I click on web links from Awful forums viewer, or click on "this post is hidden because the user is in your ignore list", they take me to a page which says "this content can't be viewed" or something like that.

True. I am in a position of privilege to get basically any phone I want (and have, considering how many I do own). I meant more in a "if a comparable android phone comes out at or near that price, there will be little reason to get this one." I can't see many people choosing this one just because of Windows Phone. Yoyboy posted:Just wanted to jump in this thread and say thanks for this. In the newest trunk builds, I'm actually keeping the thread viewmodel around so I can update threads as I need to. Now you won't have to stare at blank listviews while it is loading. I still need to fix it for refreshing forums, but it's getting there. (There is also a bug where the listview is continuing to fire for more data, even if you don't move on the list. It does not happen in my 8.1 solution, so I really need to fix that. It does not happen on the store build. Web links and links to in forums threads should work already. If they don't, then I need to push out a new build since it's working on my trunk stuff. "Hidden posts" never worked, since I never knew "ignore" was a feature . I'll add it in ASAP. ---- Here's some more screen grabs from Awful Music. I gotta say, making a music app is pretty loving hard. I mean, I knew it was complex going in, but there are a lot more variables I did not think about when I started. Handling a tracklist between the background media player and Awful itself is so drat complex. Still, it's a good learning experience. Hopefully it won't be as awful as Xbox music. I sent in the rebate form already so the phone is effectively free, but it does everything I want. It plays videos fine, does music just fine, a simple but working native podcasting app, and it's battery life is MUCH better than my last phone (SGS3 on Sprint). I was worried about the LCD screen because I remember them from forever ago but it's definitely serviceable and despite some cloudy blacks I can still read it for a while. It's just as snappy as my SGS3 for the things I actually do and the speaker is louder as well (important for using it as a podcasting radio in the car). The Nokia maps app is great thus far and it was much nicer to save offline maps than google maps was. The screen could be better but it's good enough to dissuade me from buying a new phone until a great deal comes along.

I upgraded from a 920 to a 930 recently. The screen and camera are a good upgrade - the screen is bigger on a phone around the same size, OLED, but loses glance. The camera gets a lesser version of the zoom in functionality from the 1020. It feels a little lighter but has edges where the 920 had rounded edges on the sides to allow for the bigger screen. Other than that its the same deal, so if you're having issues with Xbox music or lack of apps that's still there. Basically its more 920, so if you like your 920 now its more of that, just with more res and more megapixels - nothing really ground-breaking.

It seems like everything is created in a sealed office somewhere, and nobody is ever out with their phone saying "I wish it could do this useful thing" or "why does it do it like this, this is unintuitive and clunky" and then making actual changes happen. This is the scenario I believe, because I don't think anyone at MS ever looked at their phone and said "I wish I could not send more than 5 images to Facebook at a time, and I wish I had to sit and babysit the upload or lose the progress because it won't do it under the lock screen. In fact I wish this entire progress was more unintuitive and clunky!"

Maybe in the past week or so, my Lumia 520 has been randomly duplicating photos that I take with the camera. If I delete one, the other will delete as well. Nothing has changed on the phone. All I really do is text and listen to music. Short of a format, anything I can do to fix?

I'm dogfooding my music app now. It's funny how much you take for advantage in a music app. For example, you don't get scrolling through a song with the volume player controls for free, you have to add the hooks in yourself. Sending those hooks back up the foreground app is pretty hard. There are tons of little elements that have to be thought of to make sure it actually works as expected. The main menu now shows your favorite albums as the background. If you don't have any favorites, it uses a random selection. I still have some big bugs to fix, but I should be hitting a point where I can release a beta. Before I do though, there are two requests I have. The first is I want some feedback on how to handle back and forward commands. In Xbox music (and most music apps I know of), if you hit the "previous" button a song, it will first start the song you were listening to again. If you push it again at that point, if it's within a certain time frame, it will actually go back to the previous song. My app right now always goes back to the last song, no matter what. What would you all prefer? Second, I need help making icons. I've been using the responsibility scallop everywhere as a placeholder, but I need to actually have real icons. I want to keep it SA-focused as a general theme, so maybe variations on other SA icons? I'm not sure. Basically I really want the responsibility scallop with headphones, and I will pay for it.

What would you all prefer? In many of the apps I've used, it's always rewind song to beginning, then the previous song if pressed within that small time frame. I believe that's some sort of standard with many music-playing devices even dating back to cd-players and the first mp3 players. The scallop just looks so juvenile and gross. The frog icon many goons use is a decent choice, but you could always do the grenade logo with headphones attached?

So yeah, I do want to change it. As for the grenade; I like the idea of just riffing off the Xbox music logo with the Awful forums reader grenade in the middle. but i'm not sure. I want it to be linked to SA, but not look like an official SA sanctioned app. We already pushed the line with the forums app, but that is actually linked to SA being that it's a forums app. This is not, beyond the name of the other app. I'll just do it for now, I'm sick of looking at the scallop.

Anyone using 8.1 with Ford Sync? If so, have you had problems with Bluetooth phone stuff? If I'm using Cortana on the phone, voice recognition is pretty good. If I use it through the car system, things seem like they have a much higher chance of getting garbled. As an example yesterday, "directions to sequim washington" became "hot erections to swim washington", which was so completely wrong as to be amusing and screenshot worthy.

I've noticed in some cars there's a waiting period between when Cortana starts and when it passes through to you via the head unit. For example on my car I have to wait a good two seconds to hear the beep that means "NOW say your poo poo". If I say it right away then it only catches half since it starts actually listening after I've already started talking. Number two, try toggling the bluetooth advanced option where it connects in another totally mysterious way not explained.

Have you guys tried your phones in other cars by chance? I had a 2012 Focus and I loved MyFord Touch... when it actually worked. It broke at least once a day and was the ultimate reason I traded the car in, since even after several updates it still poo poo the bed regularly with no positive updates in sight per the dealerships. On my next car though the same phone (Lumia 920) worked flawlessly every time with the stock head unit. So basically I'm wondering how much of your issues are MyFord Touch. The best word I could use to describe MFT was inconsistent. I've heard it got better a few months after I ditched it, but maybe not that much better?

Upgrading from a WP7 handset to the 920 got me hardware OIS and WP8 on top of the spec upgrades, both pretty good at the time. Since the 920 already has WP8.1 via the DP there's no real software changes (haven't really picked up on any Cyan specific stuff) and the CPU/RAM in the 920 already handled WP quite well so for me it feels like a newer 920 with a bigger, brighter screen and sharper camera.
