Anphear posted:130 times less 'deadly' than smoking. You have to factor in exposure before you can say something is more or less deadly. If 1000 people a year smoke and 20 of them develop cancer, and ten people are exposed to asbestos dust and one develops cancer, you still can't say that smoking is 20 times deadlier. Smoking is still horrible, and may be nite dangerous per exposure (i don't have numbers in front of me), but the way you presented your statistics bugged me a bit. Anphear posted:130 times less 'deadly' than smoking. Ummm... "deadly" doesnt work like that. There's a drat sight fewer people exposed to asbestos but it is much more lethal if the fibres get into your lungs and it gets going. Mesothelioma basically is a death sentance, it's just not able to be treated well. The exposure time needed is also much lower than smoking - 1 to 3 months for Asbestos, smoking is many years (And even if you are a 20 year smoker, quit and you can most likely dodge the ill effects. You get exposed to asbestos, you can be just plain A-Class hosed, there is no known safe exposure. The risk of mesothelioma is also linear in relation to your exposure) Why do you think it's treated like a unstable bomb? This poo poo is seriously dangerous and really is a hosed up way to die.

Yeah, the worst part is that there's no known safe exposure level, some people have gotten asbestosis/mesothelioma after one exposure, others have gone 40 years exposed to it occupationally without significant ill effects. BTW, there are worse things than asbestos. Like, say, chromates, and hexavalent chromium ions. Chromates are something like 11 times the carcinogenic potential of asbestos depending on who you ask... and you are exposed to them if you grind or weld chromate coated bolts or other hardware. So don't weld grade 8 is what I'm saying.

Kastein and I are practically half asbestos half human at this point. Also, shoutout to this building for being double sheetrocked with plywood behind it. I'm trying to cut out holes in the walls for outlets and what should take 5 minutes each is taking 15 now. PITA hospital. At least there are mad hot nurses walking around.

BigHouseOfBooty posted:My workplace is choke full of asbestos insulation. I can see they are slowly getting rid off parts of it but good lord man it's 2014, that should of been done eons ago. How deadly is this stuff really? Hi! It's your friendly neighborhood Environmental, Health, and Safety Specialist here again to inform and educate! For those that don't know, asbestos is a family of naturally occurring minerals that have long, thin fibrous crystals. It is a fantastically useful material, in that it is cheap to produce, mostly inert, and a great insulator. The downside is that exposure to airborne asbestos particles can result in one of the more horrible cancers, mesothelioma. That's cancer of the mesothelium, which is the lining of your lungs and chest cavity. Yeah. In buildings, it is most commonly found in floor tiles, ceiling tiles, pipe insulation, putty and mastic, drywall joint filler compound, and stucco. If you see an older house with siding that looks like shingles but obviously isn't made of wood, that's transite siding and it's full of asbestos. That same house probably has transite shingles on the roof too. STR is absolutely correct in that it is only dangerous once it is made friable. Unless you have an angle grinder or something, it is extremely hard to make the asbestos from floor tiles friable, so it's not a big concern. Same for transite siding (don't rip it off the house and break the tiles...). Most asbestos will be contained within mastics, glues, or other compounds, so unless those get brittle or broken, they won't hurt you. The problem is that on things like pipe insulation and drywall joint compound, they do get brittle and are easily made friable, so they have to be removed and disposed of appropriately. That can get really expensive in a hurry. Your best bet when purchasing an older building for a commercial use (like a model train museum) is to call an environmental consulting firm and have them do an asbestos assessment. If you want to cover all of your bases, have them do a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment on the property as well. A Phase I will assess the potential for environmental issues arising from past and present uses of the property and surrounding properties, like soil/groundwater contamination, vapor intrusion, Superfund site next door, etc. If you purchase a piece of property before doing a Phase I and contamination is found coming from your property, you are on the hook for all of the cleanup. If there is a potential for contamination of some sort based on the information gathered for the Phase I, whoever wrote the report will recommend a Phase II, which is where they poke holes in the ground and actually see what's there. A Phase I will run you about $2500, maybe less, but don't go for the cheapest company. I've reviewed some Phase Is that were done on the cheap (under $1600) and they missed huge, glaring issues that could put the new buyer in a very bad situation. You get what you pay for with environmental work. A Phase II will generally start around $6000 and could go upwards of $30k, depending on the size of the property and how involved the sampling is. If a Phase I identifies any issues, you could use that as leverage for negotiating a lower price, but I would cut bait and find a different property. There are plenty of other fish in the sea that don't smell like gasoline and aren't chock-full of lead. edit: If your dad decides to get a Phase I (and I HIGHLY recommend it with all commercial properties) one company to call would be Cardno ATC. They aren't the best in the business, but they do lots of these Phase Is without being a bargain-basement Phase I mill, so their data will generally be reliable. They also have an office in Dayton, which is only an hour and a half south. bandman fucked around with this message at 15:46 on Jul 22, 2014 |

gently caress it, might as well bare my soul. Did it on reddit anyway. Drinking poo poo is way out of control, enough that I need inpatient detox (this sounds familiar). I'm waiting for the place that I spent 30 days at several years ago to call me back about my insurance and upfront costs. If that doesn't work out, have a couple of other calls out to other inpatient places. This time, my insurance very much does cover inpatient detox and rehab, it's just a matter of seeing how much of an upfront payment they want, and figuring out how I'm gonna get there.

I'm looking to spend under 10k for a 4 door daily driver with a stick They're somewhat known for timing chain stretching issues, this is typically caused by excessive oil consumption issues that are left unchecked. The only other common issue I know of is door lock failure. This is typically caused by the master door lock mechanism (in the driver's door) failing. It's not terribly expensive, but a bit of a pain to replace. Dealers will typically state all door lock mechanisms need to be replaced when this problem is encountered, but typically you only actually need the driver's door unit.

Surprisingly, I was sent home after a few mg of Ativan. Apparently what my insurance company says they'll pay for isn't stuff they actually cover, who'da thought?! But have appointments made for intensive outpatient therapy, and enough benzos to knock down a horse. The interesting part will be getting between home and IOP.. on benzos.. without a car (which is still at the hospital, for some bizarre reason they didn't want to let someone with 4mg Ativan straight into an IV drive himself home). The high BP was due to the withdrawal, btw. It was still a little high when I left, but down to a more acceptable 140/85 (after a few rounds of Ativan).
