I'm looking for two completely different things:

- Who are some lesser known / more obscure vocal jazz / swing-pop singers? I already know Sinatra, Martin, Nat King Cole, Bobby Darin, etc. I'm looking for some singers that may have slipped through the cracks or been lost to time.

- Anyone have good recommendations for classic bluegrass? Other than Bill Monroe. There's probably some stuff on Folkways but I don't know where to start.

the Classic Old-Time Music collection is the starting point. that said, Dock Boggs, Uncle Dave Macon, Doc Watson, Flatt and Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, and Roscoe Holcomb are all good for pre-revival stuff.

The Black Angels, Animal Collective, Spiritualized, various Ty Segall projects (he's got a huge amount of material that I'm unfamiliar with, but I'll say the album Hair he did with White Fence is great, maybe someone else can add more here), Thee Oh Sees, Black Moth Super Rainbow (kind of heavy on the electronics but I'd still call them a 'rock band'), Brian Jonestown Massacre

In addition to what Hooplah said about Ty Segall, check out his projects with Mikal Cronin and a project called Fuzz, which is awesome.

Rather than post a bunch of Youtube links, here's a link to a modern psych playlist I maintain on Spotify, which would include the same recommendations and more:

I'm a little late to this, but if you dig psych that's on the lo-fi/garage-y side, The Mirrors' "A Green Dream" LP (2001) is really good. The only problem is that it's extremely difficult to find. A couple of the songs are on YouTube, but only a couple (and they're not the very best songs from the album, IMHO, although they are good).

So I really dig this type of pop sound that seems largely, but not exclusively, tied to Japan. Really heavily produced and feels closely linked to sound design:

The Soul Jazz compilations "In the Beginning There Was Rhythm" and "New York Noise" are good introductions to the first generation of no wave-y dance-punk, featuring tunes by the likes of The Pop Group (whose LP "Y" is also essential), A Certain Ratio, etc.

I'm aware of and like a lot of the first generation recommendations like Gang of Four and A Certain Ratio. Didn't know about The Pop Group and a couple artists on those comps, so I'll have to check them out. As much as I like this era and genre, the production from the time was often so Martin Hannett-esque space that the groove would get lost in the reverb. You know anything that matches the sober rawness of No New York, production wise? Can be any post-punk, doesn't have to be dancey.

Since you're familiar with "No New York," I'm assuming you're also familiar with DNA, yes? (e.g., "A Taste of DNA"; they had a single or two, too).

Another one that pops into my head: Theoretical Girls, for whom Glenn Branca played guitar, IIRC. They're on YouTube, and pretty raw, I suppose.

I'll throw some suggestions out there.

Jimi Hendrix - Once I Had a Woman. Off his fantastic album titled 'Blues'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-QPe8qMr94

John Martyn - Glory Box (cover of a Portishead song)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv2J09XgO2g

Tim Buckley - Don't Need it to Rain Anymore
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwC5ygYwGP4

Geeshie Wiley - The Last Kind Word Blues (only a little related, in that their both blues vocalists, but this song is awesome)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAKfy2W70Qg

If it's a singer like Janis Joplin you're after, you won't have a lot of luck. Maybe look at some of the old great female jazz vocalists - Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday.

Confession: I don't know all that much about electronic music, either. But the way in which that song combines dance music and rapping reminds me a bit of The Streets (aka Mike Skinner). Here's a sample:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4iA_w81MpU

I have no idea whether this has anything to do with what you're looking for, but The Streets are innovative and critically acclaimed, so I'd recommend them regardless. "Original Pirate Material" and "A Grand Don't Come for Free" are both superb albums; there's a drop-off in quality after those LPs, though, IMHO.

I actually forgot about The Streets - remember hearing them but never getting too deep. Thanks for the reminder!

What I really want to know is if there is a style of EDM (is that right?) with a thick slow bassline coupled with GI Joe laser-gun sounds and some 'woop woop woops' thrown in.

EDIT: This song is like what I am looking for more of, no woops though.

Turisas. More on the fun and bouncy side. They have growly vocals, but they're comparatively mild and they also have plenty of songs without them, especially on their later albums. They've also been gradually shedding the whole viking shtick, but remain fun as all hell. One of my personal favourite bands.
