I find coming to this thread after reading the I/P thread helps my sanity in tangible ways.

Really there shouldn't be any taboos about expressing political views because the function of political views is to homogenize people into accessible groups. These shouldn't exist without constantly changing and updating and you don't get that without the 'melting pot' effect of always being open and vocal about whats going on in the world. If anything we should have 3-4 day work weeks where one of the extra days involves being a full time citizen and actually getting the time to look some poo poo up, instead of just getting everything from your fav guy.

I think this would combat a lot of the TV/Radio shits who talk about war with China like it's our next big moment to be REAL AMERICA again.

I've been bitching about her interview style for years, it's so awful. I'm always split, because on the one hand she talks about poo poo no one does and gets some great guests, but on the other hand she's so hamfisted and inelegant that it's painful to listen to her. She should just invite guests on and be like, "Say thing." Then sit there.

It's better than it used to be, but firms went really lean after 2008 when demand cratered and now demand is creeping back up, which is reflected in increased profits per partner and the partnerships don't seem eager to cut into that by expanding hiring. The fact that there's basically a lost generation of lawyers from 2008 to 2010 is resulting in a dearth of midlevel associates across firms, and the same profits per partner considerations are keeping compensation flat, so law jobs are effectively more work for the same or less pay than they used to be, but that's just one slice (albeit the slice that gets the most coverage by sites like Above the Law).

State and federal jobs are probably marginally better than they used to be but are so volatile with budget cuts and austerity and hiring freezes that it's a crapshoot.

Public interest jobs are there if you BYO funding via a fellowship, with some exceptions.

And of course, your competitiveness for these jobs is contingent on where you went to law school and how well you did there unless you've got backchannels which can help, and how far down a largely arbitrary bullshit ranking system you can go and remain "employable" for a given job is probably in flux.

If you want a preview of the writing on the wall, talk to the partners of American Biglaw firms managing out in the developing world. Long the best managed industry in America, there's been a trend toward aping banking's efficiency focus (i.e. short-term profit) and the first thing that's happened has been forced staff cuts, benefit cuts, salary cuts and so on. Of course the foreign partners all have strong ties with SWFs and multinationals and so on, so they'll be fine, but it's not a good time to be an American attorney looking to work overseas (outside of major culturally aligned markets like London). The people off in the hinterlands are the low hanging fruit, though. It's constantly backflowing like a slow tide.
