Excel question I'm trying to pull the date, that is included in the file's name, to put into a different cell in Excel in a different date format. For instance the file name is RandomCharacters20140724_Random.ext and the date in another box might be 07/25/2014. Is it possible to pull the file name's date to use as the date in the other cell? I don't know if what I am asking makes any sense. Like this isn't just for one entry, but would get dozens at a time.

To extract the date you'll need a cell withcode:

Not to discourage the many various questions that get asked here, because this is my daily go to read for cool questions, and cool answers, but didn't there used to be a Excel Stupid questions thread? I tried to find it to help out the person who was working with that huge data set, but I could not find it.

Extra underscores don't seem to effect the outcome as long as first underscore is always after the file's name date. The files I looked at seemed to follow this pattern.

Just read an article about Mondo Kim/Kim's Video & Music and I was wondering: do they really have extremely hard to find titles that is difficult to find even on the age of the internet or their appeal was largely due to customers not having any other store to turn to back in the old days?

According to a Wikipedia article I just read because you didn't link to whatever article you were reading, that video store opened in 1987 and broadband internet usage didn't surpass dial-up until 2004 so I would say yes, it was probably tough to find that kind of stuff on the internet.

My bad, I was aiming more for guys who actually went there so I didn't think a link would be necessary. That does seem like the obvious conclusion but one article did mention a film I have never heard of ("Blood Sword of the 99th Virgin") so I was curious if that sort of thing was common place there or if we're talking simply Eraserhead and not-so obscure titles.

Back in the 80s and into the 90s, there was a whole scene of shady companies churning out VHS copies of various films originally shown in previous decades and then as time went on tons of low-no budget original movies. Sounds like Mondo Kim was a store that happened to have good lines on how to get a hold of random weirdness. You might want to check this page out for an explanation and illustration that the kind of tapes a store like that would be all over: http://www.critcononline.com/video_companies_cover_art.htm

There is an absolute shitload of never been digitized, and never will be digitized, content out there in the world (and I am not just talking VHS/LaserDisk porn). Not that this is a direct comparison because books are not videos/music, but consider this: quote:Of the roughly 40 million books in US libraries, for example, an estimated 32 million are in copyright. Of these, some 27 million are out of print. So unless the library you are at has the book, you are not going to see it. And that goes even more for movies which are often entangled copyright wise with the music licensed for VHS release, but not for DVD release. Or the many thousands of works which exist and are decaying on film and will not be digitized before the film stock is no longer salvageable, because copyright is stupid. In terms of music, even many popular hits are never going to be available: http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2014/07/23/songs_that_time_forgot_the_most_and_least_obscure_hits_in_two_charts.html

Inter-library loans do exist, though. It's pretty easy to go to your local library and if they don't have the book you're looking for they can call around to other libraries and usually manage to get a copy on loan.

So I wonder: are attachments still down or is it just me? Because I keep seeing people posting attachments even though they're broken images that don't actually show anything. For example... When I right-click that little broken image and open it in a new tab, I just get directed to the "no attachment found" page. It's pretty weird to see people keep posting broken attachments and acting like there's nothing wrong with them.

In the extended version of that quote, the point is made that while the books are known to exist, their location is often not known, or in a private library (like most educational libraries) that do not participate in lending systems. So out of print, in copyright, no physical copy to be found or accessed. It really does help argue that as copyright gains, public discourse loses. Copyright issues about out of print items (Books, VHS tapes, unissued music, cinema trapped on film), are one of those real world examples so ridiculous that if one were to make up that situation to argue some philosophical point, no one would listen because it would be assumed to be too ridiculous an example.

I really wonder what happened to cause them to make that rule. Please tell me there's some video of a 1950s Wimbledon match where a dude struts out, dual wielding tennis rackets, and roars or something.

They are surely comparing it to going to Blockbuster and places like that. I used to go to a video store that was far away to rent old movies. As an example, say you were a fan of Humphrey Bogart. Blockbuster might've had 10 of his movies, the place I went to might've had 20, but right now I could probably find like 60 or 70 of his movies online. It's probably similar with his place. He might've had a few things you couldn't find online today but not many. And if you mean this NYTimes article, just looking at the picture of the store, I can't see him having much of anything considering how small the place is. why the hell does my laptop make these sounds after playing audio? badly recorded laptop sound its a poo poo recording but it sounds like an old commodore loading a game, kinda. It does this after every session of audio that has used the laptop speakers (toshiba satellite p850 which has harman kardon speakers) whether it be streamed or local, and it does it only when the program playing the audio has closed - that is, it doesn't do it while paused. Help me. Somebody. Help me.

If I pause the program, so there's no audio playing, then close it, I still get the sound. Even if there's no sound playing and I close chrome, say at the end credits to something, the sound (which has the effect of nails on blackboard) returns.

Also, if I let it, the sound just goes on and on and on forever, and is not looped. Edit: I should point out, in case it isn't clear, that the sound never appears if headphones are connected. Hey, to what extent are food deserts made up? I'm reasonably sure that like 95% of the people who bring them up are full of poo poo but also I live in an actual proper first world country and it's easy to forget how hosed up America is in general.

Why would you say they are full of poo poo? The term is vague and not well defined, but the general idea that some areas of habitation have poor access to food, or the food on offer is too expensive/of poor quality, is not controversial in the slightest. The concept applies globally, not solely to to America. Here's a boring anecdote for you: my grandmother lives in a relatively well off area, but since she has a lot of trouble walking, the only shop within reasonable distance is a newsagents with a tiny selection. Since supermarkets have forced all the smaller local shops to close, she has to rely on a mobility scooter to actually get to one 2 miles away - the scooter being something we bought her and feasibly not in the price range of every old lady everywhere.

They aren't made up. They aren't exclusive to America. Whether the people you talk to are full of poo poo I can't say, but food deserts are a real thing, and while I know this is the stupid/small questions megathread, but that has to be one of the easiest things to google ever, "food desert" even has its own Wikipedia article if you want to find out more. Or search google scholar, you'll find dozens of scholarly articles on the topic: First four articles discuss food deserts in the US, the UK, and Canada.

I've never heard the term of food deserts before, but every time my in-laws from rural Illinois visit me in San Francisco (or previously southern CA), they are blown away with how many food buying options we have within walking distance, most of which is high quality, fresh produce. They complain about having to drive to the nearest town (~30 minutes) for a rinky dink quicky-mart type store, or an hour to a Super Wal-Mart, where they have the luxury of overpaying for week old, brownish lettuce and cannot even get certain types of fruits and vegetables year-round. Having travelled quite a bit across the US, as well as 3-4 other countries, it seems to me more of an urban/sub-urban vs. rural issue and less of a lol America problem. Probably the climate of the rural area is another large factor. Places like California (and my experiences in Italy), which have more balanced temperate climates are easier to maintain quality food year round consistently. Places like the midwest of the US are frozen hellscapes from Nov-Feb and boiling hell on earth from Jun-Aug, so I can sort of understand why they have trouble finding affordable and cheap produce in December.
